  • @Mike-rt8jt
    @Mike-rt8jt 6 лет назад +6

    29:45 Nailed it. That's the answer. Marketing is quite literally the dark side of psychology. What's worse, it's everywhere: The badge on a car, the emblems on apparel, the billboards on roadways, in music and TV, on websites, every storefront you pass, your friend's Facebook feed...it's really everywhere. They even have advertisements on receipts now.
    It's insipid and insidious. Every advertisement is an attempt to either emotionally or intellectually sway it's target both by definition and design. It's grinding, taxing the viewers willpower however slightly with each iteration. My background is in psychology, but I'm by no means an authored Ph. D. Perhaps there is more studied research on the issue, but willpower is not an infinite resource. We can be weakened by exhaustion, duress, joy, fortune (real easy to buy that toy you want on payday isn't it?) and any other number of factors...there's only so much gas in the tank.
    What is the alternative to advertising? I don't know, I don't care and it's not my problem. It is the producer of the commodity's responsibility to entice the consumer. As a creator, you are certainly allowed to request the input of the consumer base, but by no means are producers ethically justified in demanding that the viewer subjugate themselves to any level of mental duress, however infinitesimal it may be. This cheeky sarcasm you display chastising the consumer for not wanting to engage with this system any further is, in essence, a demand via appeal to normative behavior. How about no?

    • @sssenseiii
      @sssenseiii 6 лет назад +1

      Didn't totally understand the last sentences, but producers aren't demanding you to watch anything, YOU choose to consume free media, YOU choose adds over having to pay. I'm not in favour of this practice, but I like free shit so... Imagine beeing "friends" with a really rich asshole, and all you have to do for him to let you into his sauna and invite you to dinner is laugh at his racist jokes. Yes, we are selling our sanity for entertainment, no they (advertisers) don't give a fuck.

  • @username4570
    @username4570 6 лет назад +7

    The idea that anything that starts without ads will eventually have them is a very depressing one and for me strengthens my appreciation for the fact that adblockers and piracy are as easily available as they are. I want creatives and creators to get paid for what they do but not as much as I fear what all this consumerist bombardment does to people and society. As irritating as some people can be about asking for patrons, I think platforms like Patreon are a great alternative. The thing that always bothers me about demonizing adblockers and piracy is that it puts the blame on the wrong group, the people doing these things clearly want and enjoy the content otherwise they wouldn't be trying to get it, in the case of piracy most wouldn't be able to afford to watch as much as they can this way, and in the case of adblockers they just don't want to be bothered and bombarded. By demonizing these people instead of the people doing the bombarding and pricing we defend the status quo and encourage the people with the money, making these decisions to keep on harassing us more and more.

    Sorry but I just cant get over how wrong she was about homeless people in the U.S vs Australia. Australia has a 0.43% homless rate per capita, or 105,237 homless. Where as the U.S has a 0.17% per capita, or 554,000 homeless. Australia's homless problem is around 2.5x bigger then the U.S

    • @charalanahzard
      @charalanahzard 6 лет назад

      There are around 100,000 homeless people in Australia according to a study published in 2017, and California alone had 134,278 homeless people in the same year. That said, looks like a bunch of conflicting studies.

    • @winningsince1992

      @@charalanahzard Australia has 24 million people in the country. The U.S has 325 million. California alone has a population of 39.54 million. • @winningsince1992
      @winningsince1992 6 лет назад

      Alanah Pearce Using the numbers you provided Australia has a .41% homeless rate per capita, California has a .34% homeless rate per capita. I got these numbers by dividing the number of homeless by the population of Australia/California. If you where taking the entire U.S. the per capita rate is .17% (553,742 homeless in 2017/325 million). Even accounting for error due to differences in definition in homelessness and not counting 25,000 of the homeless in Australia, though the definitions are not very different, Australia would still have about 1.3x-1.7x the homeless problem then the U.S.

    Dude, Tyler -
    Hi, it's Tyler.
    Fun story about tendins.
    My dads family went to a hotel when he was young and he was chasing his sister around? She closed a sliding glass door and he ended up running through it.
    Sliced up both of his legs REALLY badly. One of his feet, the big toe tendin was severed; so, they ended up splitting his index toe tendin and connected it to his big toe. So, now my dad can't move his big toe without moving the index toe.
    (Wiggle your big toe. (That quote is for Lawrence.))
    Cheers! Hope my story brought some horror delight :0

    I have literally the same injury as Lawrence from tuck and rolling out of a golf cart. A5 separation in that ligament and they pretty much told me my shoulder is just now permanently weaker. Surgery is possible but if it’s not hurting or causing ROM issues the operation could cause more harm than good.
    Start doing push ups now to get that strength back bud!

    honestly funhaus' ads are just as bad as the ads for other things. instead of a pre-roll its in the middle of everything, and im sure it has to be at a specificish time in the video which is ok sometimes. though most of the time it is jarring and feels forced(which it is in a way), convo grinds to a halt and it ruins the flow of the video. i do skip through the really bad ones, where they have a terrible pun that doesn't fit with the previous topic, or i just dont give a flying fork about the product. still not as bad as h3h3 though or cow chop where what ever is going on just stops and a prerecorded sometimes 5 min per ad plays and especially on h3 podcast they sometimes have 3 ad spots in a row on a 1 hr podcast with 3 breaks so 45 min of ads and 15 min of podcast (or atleast it feels that way). just saying they could be done better or not so many ads on something with minimal content. make that money but dont force it too much to where you start to lose your audience.

    HA, he said "Mia Khalifa of sports fame." and I'm like, "Oh, okay, so the pornstar named herself after some famous tennis star I don't know or something?" but nah. it's the pornstar. That's neat. Pornstars getting into mainstream (or whatever you wanna call youtube) media is always fun. Game of Thrones letting pornstars show range was cool.

      Not a college sports guy, NFL and tennis are the only thing I follow, but I'll certainly give his channel a shot. I like pornstars with personality and passions other than sex. Been a fan of the non-porn stuff Stoya and Sasha Grey have done.

    • @JohnnyStrelok

      Game of Thrones let those pornstars show range by casting them as prostitutes with few lines...I mean, I get you, I agree, good for them. But to go from delivering shitty lines while naked (porn) to delivering no lines while naked (HBO) isn't much of a leap.

    • @ScuzoidMelee
      @ScuzoidMelee 6 лет назад

      I was speaking mainly about Shai. I know they had some other pornstars on the show, but as you said, doubt many of them even had lines. Shai was a good character though, and I really liked both the actress and what they did with her story.

    Alanah is right, Brisbane doesn't have a huge homelessness problem.
    You'll often be advised not to give money to "homeless" people since they don't need it, they are well fed by the government, any excess you give them goes straight to alcohol and drugs.
    Try giving them food, they'll often reject it.
    Blankets, clothes, etc., they will reject.
    Now I'm not saying all of them are like that, but it's pretty damn common for Brisbane's homeless people to be perfectly fine and all they do is stay on the street for a job.
    They are mostly in West End, but I've seen some in Brisbane (the name of the suburb), Moorooka, and South Bank, but I'm also a southsider so the overrepresentation of southern suburbs is a factor in where I personally have seen them.

    1:01:47 I'm pretty sure deferred rendering can already render a heap of lights with very little performance impact.
    1:02:17 The Sun was already simulated using directional lights that have parallel rays and it could also cast shadows using shadow maps. Shadows maps are also really expensive to do.
    The real advantage that raytracing has is that you can have shadows from every light source; you can use area lights; you can have more accurate reflections, and real time bouncing of light.

    What makes this move even more scummy is the fact Amazon is once again raising the price of Amazon Prime. So not only do we pay more for the service, they're taking away a widely appreciated component of the service. It's a scumbag move really. The removal of ads doesn't affect me considering I rarely use twitch for viewing broadcasters considering... you know... I can just play the game. So this isn't some biased rant, just telling it how it is.
