"Gray characters aren't unrelatable, as some people say" I side eye people who can only identify with unequivocally good people because I wonder if they're able to admit that they have ever made bad choices or done bad things
grey... or showing a full spectrum of colors, instead of black and white. Grey is so dull, whereas such characters are the most lively. Meanwhile, people who think they are completely good are sociopaths... or children
The cool thing that they did in the 1st episode was "show, don't tell." Condal did with Daemon's character is show that he is extremely prideful and hates looking weak without ever saying it. He covers his head in shame when he couldn't "perform", challenged Cole after he got sent grinding on the rail like Tony Hawk, he pushed the squire who tried to help him up, and wouldn't accept Cole's hand after he yielded
Yeah, I think they did Daemon incredibly well in Episode 1. He's full of nuance already. Not to mention the acting is superb. Matt's eyes talk even on moments where he does not speak, and it's so true. You can see what he felt in certain events, that it adds more weight to understand what the character is feeling right there and then.
House of the Dragon showed something I have been waiting to see on TV for quite a while. Showing a woman who has a traditionally feminine role being strong and facing true horror and hardship for within her role (without some sort of sexual exploitation angle played up.) I’m no Arya or Brianne. I’m not a physical fighter or a “badass.” I’m not a Dany or Cersei. I have no desire for power or influence. I consider childbearing both an honor and something to fear. Aemma was a breath of fresh air. Usually they show nothing, just sad words after the fact. I appreciate it being shown for what it is. A battle.
I think that there are many different kinds of men and woman. There are men that run away the fastest and leave his wife and child behind when disaster happen and the woman first takes her child. And there are men that safe his family as with woman. There are dramatic scream woman that scream by seeing a butterfly and there are those that are fighters. There is no such thing as typical female or male role in that sense. It all depends on your character and interests and how you act in fear. For me as a woman. I am neither. I am not dramatic and I dont need power. Also I dont need to fight in battle but if my country would ever be in danger I will be standing their to defend it also because my family has lived in this country for at least hundreds(1400) of years. if I can and I dont care about me being a woman. I never wished getting children neither have my sisters. Also because I dont trust my genetics. I decide that getting healthy children is more important then just me wanting children and so be it if they are genetically sick. So then no children. Its good that they show multiple types of woman. Woman like Arya, Cersei, melisandre, Margaery, Brienne, Olenne Tyrell, Ygritte, katherine, Sansa, Dany, Eamma, the queen who never was, Alicent and whoever Rheanyra is going to be like. So far she is chilled out.
Honestly, where do we nominate this channel for awards? Are there awards for these things? A fantastic rundown, perfect word-of-the-day, and (at the risk of spoiling the video), each segment really hits home WHY this show is magical, well made and a trove thought provoking moments. It’s weird , I never know what’s going to be a hit with people, and sometimes when I’m editing a video I lose faith and I think that I’ve talked too long or not really made the point or chosen a poor topic. It’s mostly just artist self criticism stuff but it’s nice when one you weren’t sure about goes over well. Thank you vm
I love the dialogue in the Small Council scene after the Gold Cloak city purge: Daemon: *our* city should be safe for all *our* people Viserys: I just hope you don't have to maim half *my* city to do it Pefection.
I find Vinerys and Daemon a really great depiction of brotherhood. They remind me of my two older brothers. Great actors getting the most out of a quality script.
It just got renewed for season 2 today, after having a massive premiere week for the first episode. It got 20 million total viewers in less than a week. HBO hasn’t seen those type of numbers since Game of Thrones. They officially have a franchise!
HBO rarely misses with their shows and with the people attached I knew it would be good TV but I was still hesitant to take the plunge back into this world. You changed that, especially the videos leading up to ep 1. Your excitement helped me embrace this world again and I am very thankful for that. Can't wait for all that's to come from both the show and your channel!
That line about counting their dragons before they hatch was smart. Good point re: their family in general, actually. There's a tendency to expect things. Being human in the modern world, we come to know: expectation is the root of much suffering.
I like that you point out the toll all the violence takes on the people in that society! Like, all of them must be extremely traumatized. It's a strong point for me that they emphasize the effect it has instead of downplaying it. Also in the crowning ceremony I love how her nostrils flare a little, while her face is still as stone
I actually used medieval times as an example to a friend of mine who tried to say we live in a time where people have the most mental health issues bc of social media and stuff like that. I pointed out that it’s human nature to feel mentally traumatized and that as a species we always think we live in the craziest time to be alive, but like imagine living in a world where you had to travel around with a sword and full plate because everyone you pass on the road is more likely than not to rob, rape, or murder you with no consequence. That’s crazy.
@@DavidLightbringer glad to hear you agree! Funny enough the last time we spoke was when I was a new subscriber and I made a “not getting TWOW” joke and you were not pleased lol. Glad to back in your good graces, my lord
@@DavidLightbringer Yeah, or imagine living in a world where most of your siblings didn't survive childhood thanks to (now preventable) diseases, and every so often the Plague (or smallpox, or cholera, etc...) would pop up and kill more than half your town. Life before the Maesters discovered penicillin and vaccination was short and sickly.
I think Aegon's prophesy played a factor in Viserys' decision to force the birth. He loved his wife, and he doesn't come off as a megalomaniac obsessed with keeping the dynasty going. I think he truly believed he needed a male heir to save the world, not for some vain reason. That seems to have flown over a lot of people's heads.
I find the contrasting thoughts of the two brothers interesting. Viserys saying Dragon is a power man should not have trifled with and Daemon saying Dreams did not make us kings Dragons did. Essentially, both are true and gives you a glimpse of their current psyche. But I think you need to embrace your dragon and understand the power it holds to rule. Without that, it would be an imbalance, which is often a fall.
@@DavidLightbringer Now that I think about it. It does seem they are leaning on this father/son dynamic, which makes sense and makes them more human. Both of their parents died, they only have each other. Being the oldest Viserys basicslly would have to raise or take care of Daemon. From the way Daemon behaves he does look like a kid who is always trying to push his boundaries or to get Viserys attention. And Viserys constantly just slap his wrist and say dont do it again like a father figure. Since their bond never actually develop from father/son to brothers in arms they cause tension instead. Dont know where I was going but thank you for all work kind sir.
I love that the characters are so much more fleshed out than in the books - and also the extra details given about events. I noticed Aemma and Viserys were discussing the tepid water of her bath and was wondering if you think the maester could be sabotaging Aemma’s well being and maybe the child’s development by denying her the hot water she obviously craved? It seems weird that he would deny Aemma hot water, she is half Targ and it would probably have done her good. Maybe even help the baby - we know dragon eggs like the heat.
I'm glad someone brought this up, because I've always found the Maesters and the politics of Citadel against the Targaryens anyway. They want to eliminate magic.
And THIS is why your the GOAT at this! Love your brain and ability to articulate so beautifully... I hope George sees the emense justice you do to his creation. And this is NO FLUFF! I was always quietly confident about this show for a few reasons: 1. GRRM's direct input from start to finish 2. HBO can't afford to produce another ASOIAF tv show that bombs 3. This also supplements point 2, but the fact that the Long Night prequel didn't pass HBO's smell test demonstrates that they'e set a very high standard and, unlike D&D, are treating the project with the respect it deserves. They were always going to hire talented writers who knew what what worked and didn't work for Game of Thrones. I think it's going to take something drastic for the show to bomb or even disappoint from hereon in.
Had been binging your channel (particularly the HotD playlist) for nearly 8 hours when you uploaded this! Loving the content, and so excited for your commentary on the episodes to come!
Good comment. Cesarean births were seen as a last ditch effort in the Medieval ages, only used if the mother was unconscious or dead. Viserys and the Maesters’ choice would have been (rightfully) judged as horrific even back then.
Running across your channel is exclusively what has talked me into giving this show a chance. (After knowing the epic Sapochnik is involved, and Dumb and Dumber are nowhere near it, of course.) Really great work, David. Better even than the GoT fan channels I used to follow. For someone who is never going to take the time to read the books, you give us all the interesting context we need to fully enjoy this world and appreciate the depth GRRM created.
@@DavidLightbringer I will need therapy for the dragon battles, however. The exploitation of animals- especially rendering the extinct- for human greed is an unjustifiable crime no matter the motivation.
@@DavidLightbringer And another thing- your video about how we should root for the small folk is absolutely stellar. Art imitates life, so any analysis that does not emphasize the necessity of class awareness and class struggle is incomplete. HotD is a great lens to have those discussions. This is looking very promising. Incredible vibe and that was only the first episode setting the stage and introducing characters. It has not even begun yet.
first off, David your videos are so well made, your tone, pace, and passion really stand out! Second i love this show sooo much! it's subtlety is masterful. the minuscule tilt of the head when the baratheon hesitates to bend the knee is something i know D&D would've overlooked as irrelevant or unnecessary. but these show runners know how to tell a gotdamn story! long live David Lightbringer and long live HotD!!!!!!!!
well structured video and ideas. the comparison between the script and the novel really helps to bring in more information to someone who hasn't read the book (like me)
It feels so damn good to be excited once again about the world that I fell in love with… a book fan since ‘96, absolutely broken starting with season 5 and canceled hbo after Bran declared king cuz he “has a good story” 😒… then with the help of your channel and some others, found faith to give it one more try with this show. Thank you David and everyone who helped me keep the faith in a world we all love❤️
Great breakdown. It'll be interesting to see what they do with Otto in the future, because at this point he appears to be on a path of being one of the few "non-gray' characters. I loved the final Rhaenyra scene as she was named heir. Milly Alcock did such a great job of displaying the sense of foreboding for her future. What this first episode also did was help expand Martin's universe. It brings so much depth and interest to the Targaryens and the wider world from Westeros to Old Valyria. It opens up so much possibility in future storytelling beyond HOTD.
The level of detail you put on the videos is insane. Such immaculate attention man, I love it. I try to watch you with something of a critic's eye, to see if I truly agree with everything, and actually I do xD. Richest content about HOTD ever.
I'm planting my flag and starting the Rhaeny's fan club!!! Shes the side eye Queen Who Never Was that we got but don't deserve. Shes gonna be one of the characters where if shes talking you'd be a fool not to listen
Bless you king. As much as I'd love to watch your live breakdowns of the episide, they're just a little too long for me to fit in to my schedule. This length and format is perfect and I thank you. Amazing analysis and very witty and digestible. Pls keep it up
I get the feeling we're gonna see caraxes do some aquatic type fighting in the step stones. Those kind leg wings look more akin to webbed toes than wings.
The only thing missing is humor. I don't need a comedian or anything, but I notice a lack of any situation or lines that made me smile let alone laugh.
I trust these two show runners to do the thing right to the very bitter end. I'm ready to be horrified and heartbroken. The first episode, as a mother via cesarean, made me throw up in my mouth. It's a good sign!
I was so disappointed with season 8 that I had really no expectations for HOTD but I enjoyed that first ep so much. I'm excited again! And it's at a good time too, I got a lot of b.s. happening in my life. I look forward to your videos and this channel is rapidly becoming one of my favorites. You should have a lot more subs. Keep up the good work, fangirl here 👍🏽❤️🔥 P.s. loved the "ashes in his mouth" reference from Tyrion lol
The sound effects were awesome too. Every scene with Targ.'s, u can hear the candles & any background 🔥 fire/torches etc, crackling & hissing & spitting, and as family tensions rise in a scene, the sound of the fire intensifies! Whereas, usually anytime u see candles 🕯, on film, there's no sound effect. HOTD's candle sound effects & volume were equivalent to those u hear when shown a bonfire, or housefire in any other production. That was really cool! 😎
And, I believe their was fire in every single scene of the entire show. I havnt gone back & confirmed, but from my recollection, I remember taking notice of that while I was watching.
The one that I was most surprised to absolutely love was The Hand. We all know him for ages and love his work, but this was next level acting. When he stood up right after Daemon provoked him was superb, you could see his restrain and you knew that was the point of no return for him.
Otto standing up right was awesome but it was Hightower who provoked Daemon first with his low-blow comments about Daemon & his wife. That's some top tier manipulation from Otto.
semi off topic, but when you're talking about this episode and how your perspective on characters shifts from scene to scene, i can't help but recommend a video essay, ladyknightthebrave's video on the last of us video games. i think (even if by chance you're not familiar with the games)you would really enjoy the discussion there. love the content as always.
GRRM, Ryan and Miguel are such a like minded and incredible team, along with the rest of the cast, crew and support. This show already has what it takes to dominate this genre and succeed GoT in an incredible way. I'm so stoked!

Great video! I recently found your channel and have been binging your past livestreams and videos. Fascinating content! ❤️
Welcome aboard!!
I'm so glad a came across your channel a couple of weeks ago. This is the therapy/breakdown I need.
right on Terese, welcome!
Heya David! Thanks man, lots of new video's lately. ❤️🤘🏻
This is looking very promising. Incredible vibe and that was only the first episode setting the stage and introducing characters. It has not even begun yet.
I really appreciated the explanation of the technical stuff!
This man is a machine. I will consume allll the content LML! Cheers!
Thank you for feeding me during the week while I'm just ITCHING for episode 2, episode 1 was so full of brilliant work I'm still spinning
The squire barfing made me laugh soo hard I needed that comedic relief because SHEESH…
Fantastic breakdown. I like the nerdy stuff so please make more of these videos
I have not read any of the books and your channel so helpful and fun. Looking forward to gaining more insight. I Luv this channel!! 🔥🐲
This page is going to blow up by the end of this series. Bet on it.
Appreciate the affirmation !
Loved your thoughts on the first episode. Can't wait for more breakdowns.
I love the writer workshop type of talk. Thanks for having it!
Great video! You're one of my favorite of the ASOIAF/HOTD RUclipsrs.
I said something like this last video, but truly Alicant makes me think of Ophelia.. and perhaps Lady Macbeth rolled up together.
first off, David your videos are so well made, your tone, pace, and passion really stand out!
Wow, thank you!
Very nice video format👌🏻
I'm so down for more
well structured video and ideas. the comparison between the script and the novel really helps to bring in more information to someone who hasn't read the book (like me)
It feels so damn good to be excited once again about the world that I fell in love with… a book fan since ‘96, absolutely broken starting with season 5 and canceled hbo after Bran declared king cuz he “has a good story” 😒… then with the help of your channel and some others, found faith to give it one more try with this show. Thank you David and everyone who helped me keep the faith in a world we all love❤️
ramin djawadis music in the end of the episode was also superb😍
YES IT WAS
Great breakdown.
I'm so grateful to have you during this season 🥰
Yeah I think house of the dragon is going to be better than Game of Thrones just because the story is finished and they have a solid formula.
Viserys is already one of my ride or die homies. I am in love with how Paddy is giving life to this character.
The level of detail you put on the videos is insane. Such immaculate attention man, I love it. I try to watch you with something of a critic's eye, to see if I truly agree with everything, and actually I do xD. Richest content about HOTD ever.
Thanks David
I'm planting my flag and starting the Rhaeny's fan club!!! Shes the side eye Queen Who Never Was that we got but don't deserve. Shes gonna be one of the characters where if shes talking you'd be a fool not to listen
Analysis on point as usual!
That king Jaehaerys really looks like he lost the sense of life on that throne haha XD
I love your thoughtful commentary, so good, thank you.
Excellent video, loved this one!
solid video yo, got a new sub from me. Exciting to be back in Westeros
New intro, I like it!!🙌
Bless you king. As much as I'd love to watch your live breakdowns of the episide, they're just a little too long for me to fit in to my schedule. This length and format is perfect and I thank you. Amazing analysis and very witty and digestible. Pls keep it up
I can't help it. I want George to know about your work sooo bad. I think viewing A song of ice and fire through mythical astronomy is amazing.
Great content brother
Brilliant as always 🔥🔥🔥💯💯
I get the feeling we're gonna see caraxes do some aquatic type fighting in the step stones. Those kind leg wings look more akin to webbed toes than wings.
your dragon glass .. Is awesome
The only thing missing is humor. I don't need a comedian or anything, but I notice a lack of any situation or lines that made me smile let alone laugh.
oh I laughed hard at "this family already has a Visenya" and people saying Rhaenyra stinks like dragon
Really great review! Subbed!!
I trust these two show runners to do the thing right to the very bitter end. I'm ready to be horrified and heartbroken. The first episode, as a mother via cesarean, made me throw up in my mouth. It's a good sign!
Senpai noticed me 😁
The opening scene of Rhaenyra riding Syrax into King’s Landing felt like we were coming home. 🥹
Keep up the good work, fangirl here 👍🏽❤️🔥
P.s. loved the "ashes in his mouth" reference from Tyrion lol
Fuck the bullshit!!
@@DavidLightbringer lmao i appreciate it, homie
I already cant cope with the fact we are "loosing" Milly Alcock as Rhaenyra....
David another great video!!
More of this, pls!! Brilliant!
I love your breakdown on all levels! Best breakdown by far!🌟
I love the writing tips ;)
Thought the sound design has been amazing on this show! Yes!
Beautiful deconstruction, love it.
I feel cheated that I only now learned of your channel. Just brilliant.
RUclips was hiding me a little bit but now I am freeeeee lol
great video David, very informative... and yes a great start to the series!
LOVE that new intro, keep it!
I love your commentary and I hope you grow beyond your imagination. Good going!
I am here for the writing class! =D
Corlys and Rheanys. King and Queen of the side-eye.
They were funny
I am SO excited for Emma D’arcy’s performance here as a fellow nonbinary person. They’re gonna kill it
makes so much sense to approach the character that way, I'm frustrated with people that don't see that
@@DavidLightbringer those people are going to miss so much I almost feel bad for them. Almost.
Great Video!
@@skywatcheradept No doubt, Otto will continue to push until Daemon leaves Westeros. So much cool stuff left to see
Great video. Agree with everything
Lol well into loving season 2 even more still felt like watching this anyway. Thats how pleasant your content is to listen to 🤓
It got renewed already so yeah we are in good hands it seems.
semi off topic, but when you're talking about this episode and how your perspective on characters shifts from scene to scene, i can't help but recommend a video essay, ladyknightthebrave's video on the last of us video games. i think (even if by chance you're not familiar with the games)you would really enjoy the discussion there.
love the content as always.
Excellent video. Be technique-y as much as you want!
GRRM, Ryan and Miguel are such a like minded and incredible team, along with the rest of the cast, crew and support. This show already has what it takes to dominate this genre and succeed GoT in an incredible way. I'm so stoked!
Great video LmL
Confirmed Season 2 👍👍
Of course you open with shamanic drumming!
I’m so excited that we get to watch HOTD every Sunday now🤧🔥!!!
