i know this video is old, i’m currently at the fort drum area. these days i drive up here with my family to see my great grandmother that lives right over at fort drum. man does this video make me miss flying from atlanta to syracuse! thanks for sharing, i love flying and i’m not sure when i’ll get to do it again if ever. I do plan on doing flight school though
In the realm of aviation videos, this is a masterpiece. You captured every aspect of the commercial flying experience perfectly. Wish you all the best during your military service. Hope they let you take your camera for a ride on a C17 while you're at Fort Drum.
David Peters Thank you very much sir. My account is still relatively new but I'm sure it'll take off over time. I will be posting many more aviation videos in the near future with the same format as this, so feel free to subscribe! Also, thank you for your support of our military and hopefully before too long I'll be able to document my flights on a C-17 out of Wheeler-Sack!
Josephious Brosif Could be various reasons behind it. Might be a preferred standard of procedure at Delta for pilots to perform a rolling takeoff in the MD-80 if conditions permit, or perhaps rolling takeoffs are the norm at KSYR being it is a less busy airport and there’s not many arrivals to cause departing flights to have to hold short of the runway or taxi into position and hold. Every time I’ve flown out of KSYR it’s always been a rolling takeoff except for once and I believe there was arriving traffic that particular time.
Zach Lang It could very well be just a Delta thing since they're one of the only remaining operators of the MD-80. It's definitely not just a KSYR thing, althought the small amount of traffic probably does encourage rolling t/o's. I'm almost wondering if the JT8D engines are susceptible to compressor stalls...?
...haha...spooling up before even reaching the threshold! Pilots know how to have fun at times.
5:24 JT8Ds are to die for
I took that route a few times when I visited my dad in the late 90s. I always cried on that flight since I was leaving the family in Syracuse.

I like when the pilots tell him "this is one of the last ones you have to fly", after noting the MD-88's are being retired.
Great that you got to spend some time up front!
🌹💙 What a blastoff! Thanks👍
He just freaking WENT for that takeoff! Come around the curve off the taxiway and YEET
wicked video dude
Yep! Love those Wonderful landings. Nice video.
Nice video and post-production!
gomphrena Thank you very much!
Fantastic video! Great engine sound too! Delta's MD-88s retire in 2020-2021, while American's MD-80s retire this September unfortunately.

Whats that thing around the nose gear? Dont see anything like that on other jetliners.
Dan Stinson That’s a FOD detector, prevents debris on the runway from getting jammed inside the wheels during takeoff/landing.
What are main reasons for its retirement? Are they to old now? Are these aircraft not economic anymore?
Benjo D. Primarily inefficiency with fuel consumption and old age, both of what you described. This particular airframe was assembled in 1990.
Why do MD-80's almost always do a rolling takeoff?

3:15 I noticed on almost all MD-80s and MD-90s the PA has a constant whine. Do you have any idea what the cause of this is? Electrical interference?
After 9-11 and the cockpit is accessible??
some one Yep! Just not during flight. Just ask permission.
Great video !!5ubscribed
