If ONLY I had known about Lilium before starting my job at "a major test & measurement company" in München, it would have been great to be able to innovate and develop in this environment....and, I lived just 20 minutes away! Great work, you all, viel Erfolg!

Lilium’s overall concept and the potential from using real wings for lift enhanced by accelerating the airflow over the upper wing surface is so far ahead of the others that they will leave Joby behind, provided they can maintain the momentum toward delivery. I hope the key SPAC investors will not interfere with the developers, nor do a Joby by dumping a ton of stock soon, which will scare away a broader spectrum of investors.

Wow, these founders are incredibly well -spoken! What a great concept and analysis. Least important is the accent, but I was FULLY sold on the Tech, when Scottish Alistair McKintosh, ex of Rolls-Royce, came on voicing the incredible tech. Ah laddie, you're so right!
Read the book- "How the Scots Invented the Modern World" . We engineered EVERY thing.

There are some immutable laws of aerodynamics that have been confirmed over many years of multirotor development. 1. the more motors you have the less efficient your design will become, Four motors being the optimal solution to create VTOL functionality. 2 Ducted fams are far less efficient than propellers that have been optimized to create a thrust core that absorbs the available power into a velocity that is almost equal to the vehicles designed speed. The blades swept area is the way to optimize the power to thrust efficiency ratio. 3. Stabilized thrust systems that utilize a fixed pitch prop, with a variable speed motor are far less efficient than a constant (optimized) speed motor with a variable pitch prop. these are facts that have become cast in stone. The fixed pitch prop concept is probably the most misunderstood aspect of the current mass-produced multi-rotors of today. One outstanding design that proved this fact beyond any doubt was Curtis Youngblood with his Stingray design. It was the only multirotor design that could auto rotate during descent and fly inverted. The conventional pulsed variable output from the ESC also draws more current at any given thrust value than the constant speed/variable pitch option. I cannot see how this Lilium design will never be anything other than an inefficient gimmick.

In fact, the new evtol aircraft should provide better cost efficiency than classic helicopters, and in this direction two main parameters should be achieved: better lift to drag ratio 7 or higher, and the disc loading should be slight higher than classic helicopters has got.
These two parameters are fighting each other, and the scheme close to compaund helicopters will be most effective.

And if they have a complete power system failure, it will fall out of the sky (no aerodynamic controls).

If they can implament a fully autonomous pilot, yet allows front passengers to be the roll of navigators, commanding the craft in detail where and how padern of flights, like they were almost manually, it could expand the service to many, also reduce cost & demand high.

the problem with duct fan is that they are not efficient. you would need at least 3times of the normal propeller energy to create a lift

  • @garymccann2960

If a normal take off and landing requires less drain on the batteries... put some wheels on it! It is 321 KM to the first big town in Texas!!!

You may have done this, but your "3 motor pod" should be the same, all over the aircraft. Maintenance should be the airlines send you, used 3 motor pods for maintenance, and the airline receives refurbished 3 motor pods, that they just install into any open socket.

Automakers announce a new product, give you some pictures and a year later it's on the sales floor of the dealerships.
"Flying Car" manufacturers announce a product and 5 years later they are still talking about it.
Hell...Gulfstream designs, builds and certifies a brand new jet in less time.

Hey Daniel, Ya know how sometimes your computer goes "Tango Uniform" and gives you the "Blue Screen of Death" resulting in a reboot? Well what happens when your flight control computer decides to takes a dump while airborne...maybe a lightning strike, maybe a battery hickup, or maybe just "sh*t happens....who knows. The question is will the airplane glide controllably? Now tell the truth, Daniel! Or are you going to end up with a ballistic chute like the Blackfly had to do?

    • @kamel3d

You could say same thing about any airplane but this isssue was solved long ago by having more than one computer ( redandancy) and also shield them from cosmic rays, your comment should not even be here

How is the heat dissipated again?
This is why all lithium-ion battery powered cars excepting Tesla started catching fire and exploding when everyone tried to become *the other Model S* anyways ("thermal runaway.")
Anyhow given the global energy crisis obviously the cost of battery even as storage is set to soar excepting those with manufacturing in the United States which has the only stable and robust grid outside of South Korea at the moment and anywhere on Earth.
Plus the USA is a massive energy exporter now as well *trying* to stabilize *YOUR* electrical grid. From a production and "running distribution" this is amazing...but better than a dirigible?
Maybe as an interesting adjunct to a dirigible this is.

Very cool technology but the fan loadings are high compared to say Joby, which means quite a lot of high frequency noise, again compared to Joby. Noise will be the determinant of licences to operate in cities, second is redundancy (safety), not clever technology unfortunately.

That looks like new financial pyramid, no required power for hovering listed, no payload at full onboard power published, they promiced and it goes in years, but thise promises can,t be realised by technical reasons.
They always occasionally forget to show one necessary element - fuel tank from the space shuttle and engine in one megawatt power consumption
