My friend, your use of words to describe these albums is nothing short of art itself. Very bold, although understandable, to place the wall at #8. The Dark Side of the Moon has been so important to me and the lyrics have evolved as I grow old. Rather, I have evolved with the lyrics. Very well done video, my friend! Keep up the great work!

Interestingly, I was in a bar one time, and some younger people, offspring of my friends, asked me what bands I liked.
(Which is only a step up from 'What's your favourite colour?')
After naming a few bands they'd never heard of, I said Pink Floyd.
They said that they quite liked The Division Bell, but didn't know much about the earlier stuff...
(I've heard The Division Bell probably twice, and that was enough for me.)

It's curious that, from reading the comments on RUclips videos, Animals is like Marmite.
You either love it or hate it.
Maybe hate is too strong a word for Animals, but until The Wall was released, it was my least favorite of my Floyd collection.
But then The Wall took that slot...

    • @monty2005
      @monty2005 2 года назад +1

@@lazer2365 I agree about the Marmite thing. Animals came out a few months before I was born, so I can only remember The Wall coming out onwards (I remember being terrified by the video to Brick 2 when it was on Top of the Pops around Christmas ‘79). After I discovered DSotM and WYWH in my mums record collection around the age of 10 or 11, and Dark Side especially kicking off my PF habit, I went out and got the albums over yhe next few years (or got people to give them me as gifts). Animals was the last one of the big ones that I got, having always put it off because it only had five tracks. I can still remember the day I brought it home and listened to it for the first time. It was truly a WOW moment. I fell in love with the album the first time I ever heard it. It is my absolute favourite album, by any artist/band ever!
Having heard the 2018 remix of Dogs, it’s given me a second WOW moment. Pigs is my favourite track, so I can’t wait until the 16th to hear it. I just wish there were live recordings from the In the Flesh tour, like professional ones. I definitely remember reading that James Guthrie was asked to work on one show from that tour after the success of Is There Anybody Out There, but for some reason he felt he couldn’t do it justice, yet it’s said there are no professional multi tracks of any of the shows. At least we have Oakland ‘77!
As for The Wall, for me too it occupies my least favourite slot, at least of the Meddle onwards albums, but I had always wanted to see it performed live, and I was lucky enough to see Roger do it at Birmingham in an arena setting then again at Wembley Stadium. I have to say that was another WOW moment, especially at Birmingham.
I’d love to see all of Animals performed live.
Have you ever heard Live Frogs Set 2 by Les Claypool? It’s a fucking amazing set consisting entirely of Animals live!

I find The Final Cut to be more of a reflection of my life afflictions than any other of their albums. The Final Cut has been one of the albums that make me cry every single time I listen to it and I always recommend it to others. It is one of my favorite albums by Pink Floyd and I don't find any post-Waters production worth musically or content-wise, except for maybe a couple of songs from a couple of albums. I have spent entire months dwelling in The Final Cut. I find it has one of the most dramatic abrupt nuances in the entire Pink Floyd catalog. And it requires tremendous sensitivity and tremendous fortitude to listen to it. No other album requires this type of self-check and mental preparation from the listener. David Gilmour does an amazing job where he contributes in it and I love the sax player's contribution as well. The lyrics are superb, touching, painful, deep. They tear the soul like no other album does.

Roger Waters sounds a lot like Donald Trump: In October 2016, Waters arrogantly announced:
"We are going to take a new show on the road. The content is very secret. It’ll be a mixture of stuff from my long career, stuff from my years with Pink Floyd, some new things. Probably 75% of it will be old material and 25% will be new, but it will be all connected by a general theme. It will be a cool show, I promise you. It’ll be spectacular, like all my shows have been."

When you compare "The final Cut" to Water's real solo albums you can clearly hear, that it has only Floyd in the name, all the great influence of the other band members are missing (unfortunately) - no comparison to "Animals" or "The Wall"!

I feel exactly the same you do about the 2019 mix of A Momentary lapse of Reason. For me, it just became a true Pink Floyd album and I could finally enjoy all of those beautiful songs such as Terminal Frost or Yet Another Movie. Rick's keyboards from live performances and Nick's rerecorded drums just gave it that "timeless" feeling.

I find myself listening to "More" more (ahem) than, dare I say it, Atom Heart Mother and Obscured by clouds. On the other hand I haven't listened to Ummagumma (completely agree with your pronunciation) for about 15 years. I quite like the more "bite-size" experimentation on More and love the pastoral aspects you pick up on, crossed with the harsh (Nile Song and its later reprise in "Ibiza Bar" - two of the heaviest tracks Floyd ever recorded). Perhaps the discipline (whatever it may have been) of writing for a film helped focus the noodling just a bit?

Fantastic ranking/reviews! Very well put and interesting takes. My top 5: DSotM, DB, WYWH, Animals, Wall. It’s oddly refreshing to see someone else unafraid to say how great Dark Side of the Moon is. It feels like so many knock it down because of its popularity and how cliche it is to say it’s a masterpiece. But this is one of those cases where the hype is very much earned. I rarely throw the word “perfect” out about any piece of media/art. But it truthfully is the closest thing imaginable to perfect to me.

While I understand that the order of your list is your opinion, I just can't get behind it. The only thing we can agree on is the 69-71 live Pink Floyd stuff is amazing. My order for reference:
    1. Meddle
    2. Animals
    3. Dark Side of the Moon
    4. Piper at the Gates of Dawn
    5. Atom Heart Mother
    6. The Wall
    7. Wish You Were Here
    8. More
    9. Obscured by the Clouds
    10. The Final Cut
    11. A Saucerful of Secrets
    12. The Division Bell
    13. Ummagumma
    14. A Momentary Lapse of Reason (both the 87 mix AND 2019 remix)
15 ?. The Endless River (really not an album as just a bunch of studio leftovers, doesn't really belong on this list)
Also, while I love Rick Wright, I think it should always be noted (and never is) that the reason he was kicked from Floyd in 79 was due to his COCAINE problem, yet Waters seems to get demonized for this all the time.
And to agree with some other posters, The Final Cut is no more a solo effort than Momentary Lapse was, but at least The Final Cut sounds like the natural progression from the Wall at that time.

A well-conceived and researched, idiosyncratic survey with plenty of valuable information. I was unaware that A MOMENTARY LAPSE OF REASON had been remixed. (Might be worth a listen.) Thanks also for the perspective on THE ENDLESS RIVER, another Floyd album that got by me. While I still lean toward MEDDLE, I have to admit to a growing appreciation of ATOM HEART MOTHER. DARK SIDE OF THE MOON is still #1 but I find I go there less and less, preferring the instrumental grooves of WISH YOU WERE HERE. ANIMALS was, indeed, the first of the 'angry' records. I played it a lot back in the day but that was my final 'real-time' Floyd purchase. Despite some astounding moments, THE WALL and FINAL CUT are really a chore to get through. Maybe I've yet to appreciate Waters' overall narratives. Personally, I find myself having more fun with UMMAGUMMA and the soundtrack albums. The two earliest albums are always worth going back to, gradually divulging their hidden secrets.

Although they are considered as studio albums in their catalog, I don't consider "More" and "Obscured by Clouds" as such, just like Peter Gabriel's "Birdy" and "Passion" aren't considered as studio albums in his catalog. Those two albums are soundtracks, but nevermind. Here's my list:
    1) The Dark Side of the Moon - arguably the greatest album in rock history
    2) The Wall - one of the greatest conceptual albums and sheer grandiosity of the album is unreal (my favourite album of all time)
    3) Wish You Were Here - Shine on & Wish You Were Here, what more to say, two of their greatest songs
    4) Animals - very underrated album, doesn't get the recognition it deserves
    5) Meddle - their classic period began with this one, they've found their sound with it, Echoes - what more to say
    6) The Divison Bell - best post Waters album
    7) The Final Cut - not as good as their previous 4 albums, if it was done more as a band project rather than a solo album by Waters, it could've been a masterpiece
    8) The Piper at the Gates of Dawn - really a period piece, very psychedelic but very good as a debut album
    9) Atom Heart Mother - aside from the horrible cover art, a very good album
    10) Obsured by Clouds - underrated too, overshadowed by the release of Dark Side soon after, but it contains some of their best acoustic work
    11) A Saucerful of Secrets - struggling to find a way without Barret, but it's got some good songs
    12) A Momentary Lapse of Reason - very weak by PF standards, only "On the Turning Away" and "Sorrow" save this album from being bad, too much elevator music and ambient noodling
    13) The Endless River - leftovers from AMLOR and TDB, tribute to Wright, nothing more
    14) Ummagumma - it's saved by the live album, studio album is atrocious, some of the worst songs in their entire catalog is on this one (several species....)
    15) More - they were really struggling in 1969 to find a direction, resulting in 2 very bad albums.

I bought Atom Heart Mother because of the cow, and because the band was called Pink Floyd. I hadn't heard of them, but I often bought records in those days because of the cover art (e.g., Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced?) I had a lovely LSD trip one Saturday which began with side one of Atom Heart Mother in headphones before I even got out of bed.
But Wish You Were Here was the record where I became convinced that if there was a God, it might just be Pink Floyd. So that's my #1, with Dark Side and Meddle next. I guess I should listen to Animals again -- didn't grab me at the time it came out.

Absolutely love your reviews, especially the Pink Floyd reviews, being a big fan myself. I would personally put 'the endless river' a much higher ranking in the list, but the others on the list I definitely agree with. Keep it up
