I remember i was watching Carrie with my family on Halloween, and my mom brought up this show was a broadway musical. I remember looking up this show, and before I watched it, I read the very harsh reviews and then decided to watch it. But after watching it, I was amazed and this show is truly a masterpiece. I hope one day this version gets revived on Broadway and I hope I get the chance to be in it
And Eve Was Weak will forever be one of the most powerful duets for me. The passion of the vocals, the threatening orchestrations; it’s just theatrical gold
This reconstruction is absolutely amazing! Thank you for letting those of us who missed the musical and only heard negative things finally get to see and hear it. As a parent with one child, my daughter, I have to say the power of the relationship between the mother and Carrie really tore me up. It gives the story a whole new dimension that I think any parent would have to relate to. You should be incredibly proud of what you have accomplished doing this.
Thank you for this. Your words means a lot. I’m thrilled you found her to enjoy. Do please spread the word and bring more people to the show. Thank you again.
Wanted to say this reconstruction is such a gift. I wasn’t there but it always seems like such a fascinating and enjoyable piece of pop culture and this documents it wonderfully!
I sincerely wish that this version of the musical got a cast recording. I love the 2012 Off-Broadway version but this one has so many great orchestral and operatic parts and it would’ve been great to hear Linzi, Betty, Darlene, Charlotte and all the cast on an album!
Like many people, I knew about Carrie The Musical because of WitW's video about it's rough battle with reputation. I came to THIS video wanting to see it for myself and appreciate the efforts of the artists who help build the show, but I didn't want to patronize it either. I felt like it was disingenuous to appreciate something just because it's the underdog. That seemed more like pity than appreciation. I wanted to experience it fairly and casually, give credit & criticism where it is due, enjoy it as if it's just as another piece of everyday entertainment that I just came across that day. So I allowed myself to stand up and get snacks or do chores as the video was playing in order to keep myself from overanalyzing or overthinking aspects of it. And when I was preparing dinner... 'Eve Was Weak' started playing and later followed by 'Evening Prayers'. I had my phone waaaay across the counter, and I kid you not, Hateley and Buckly's performances and the music shot goosebumps through me despite the low quality recordings. That's the moment where I was like "yeah, I can't deny it when the literal hairs in my body reacted to it. Carrie was something special, it was just dealt a bad hand."
@@screemingnott also, if you’re interested in a more thorough and factual account of the production, check out Chris Adams’ “Out for Blood: A Cultural History of Carrie The Musical”. Excellent book that dispels the ridiculous myths surrounding it (such as Grease/Greece).
Absolutely incredible to be able to watch this, thank you. I wasn't alive when this premiered and thus, of course, was unable to watch it. Carrie has always been one of my favourite stories and one of my favourite musicals, despite its reputation. "And Eve Was Weak" is a masterclass in songwriting and musical composition, and both actresses do an unbelievable job in performing it. The revival really can't touch either it or "The Destruction." Thank you so much for letting those of us who missed it have access to it.
I'll second that - i was touring with a dance company in new York that summer, and super keyed up to catch Carrie on a night off......alas by the time we got there....all i got to see was a poster here and there and the theatre closed.......and to see it now, and with a pretty good and great recording.....yes, sometimes we do get second chances.....

Hi Joseph, thank you for this message. I’m grateful beyond words how warmly the film has been taken in by so many. It began simply as little videos I made to teach myself editing. The Master Cut gradually evolved from that, organically, and it was as much a surprise to me that it grew into this. DAMN. I've been researching this show for the last 20+ years & this has footage & stills I've never seen before. I'm blown away that you found so many different sources & had enough footage to cut together like this. I'm especially impressed that you found so much rehearsal footage; there's one video up of Do Me A Favor but I haven't found any other rehearsal video
Thank you so much for creating this video; I'm totally obsessed with it. I wish so much that the revival had followed this production more closely. I've heard a lot of complaints about the 1988 show, and in my eyes they are almost all completely wrong. It's genius. Hoping for a true revival someday of this masterpiece. If there were a GoFundMe, I'd contribute.
I agree, so many insanely edgy original stagings of shows have been re-interpreted completely wrong. A great example being the original Hal Prince production of Evita, modern productions trying to bring sympathy, realism and authenticity into a show that was inherently a spectacular anti-fascist political commentary with genius caricatures. I don't like the 2012 production at all, they turned something that was on the level of Les Mis into Dear Evan Hansen and that's not a good thing, Carrie as a musical needed to be a Horror spectacle and that's something that even the writers of the show didn't understand which is crazy.
Yasssss, I yassed so hard when the notification with my art as a thumbnail popped up on my phone! Truly the work of the fandom!! Pleasure to be a part of this godly work as well.
"And Eve Was Weak" genuinely frightened me when she started screaming at Carrie. That's the first time I've been actually creeped out by music. That was amazing.
Thank you for this. Wow. This is so much closer to the way the musical was intended. While yes the revival is very good, this version still has real horror injected into it. And in a lot of places the absurdism of it really works. I want to direct a version that lives closer to this and the book. A true mashup of the way it was meant to be presented.
Just watched again and I absolutely love the intermission footage. Seeing everyone's enthusiasm for the production is very touching. And I adore the interview with Gene Anthony Ray. Since he's no longer with us to share present-day reflections as so many others have, it's great to see his personality. His description of who the show is for gets me every time. 😆
Such a labor of love, thank you! This is going to be amazing for introducing new people to Carrie, it was awkward showing people Broadway Act 1 then having to switch to the Betty-less Stratford video. The captions are a godsend, especially for Heaven. And it was great to finally understand all of the dialogue, I was never able to parse what Carrie said the Margaret just before leaving to the prom!
This makes me think someone should try to get as much of the OG cast as possible and record a live band and them doing the vocals and see how it ends up lol.

❤️❤️❤️❤️ it's my dream for a youth opera company to restage the 1988 with full orchestrations (and for any new cast to be emulating this original cast).
Great job. It will always baffle me that Debbie Allen , a broadway vet, had no idea how to choreograph a musical., it was like a FAME episode gone beserek. Not to mention the costumes that were so Vegas meets disco. I still love the Betty/barbara /Linzi portions so much . Watching this confirms that there was indeed two completely different shows kind of fighting each other.
Words can't express how happy this makes me! I watched it live, and am now watching it again. In the Stratford footage when Margaret tells Carrie that she never should have let her live, and then Carrie asks her why she let her it's just so powerful and heartbreaking. I don't know if that part was cut prior to Broadway, because I can't recall hearing it in any of the Broadway audio recordings. If it was cut it's a shame though. Heck, before this I couldn't figure out how Margaret killed Carrie in the end. I had expected to see Margaret's arm raise up in an obvious and dramatic way, and then come down hard, but that doesn't happen. The footage was so poor that I couldn't see the dagger she's carrying as she decends the staircase. I expected to see her pull out a knife when she was actually holding it in her left hand the entire time. lol
Musicals have never really been something I was into, but Carrie 1988 is the one exception. Ever since I first discovered it existed, and gave the Stratford performance a watch out of morbid curiosity I just can't get enough of it. I guess it could have something to do with the fact that I was a Carrie when I was younger, but even still I had never really been a fan of the DePalma film, nor King's original, but there's just something about the musical version that works for me. This is my preferred version of Carrie, and The Master Cut is IMO the best version of the original musical available. I couldn't tell you how many times I've returned to this video over the last year and a half, but as long as it's here I know I'll keep coming back. Thanks again to those who made viewing this masterpiece possible!
I love this version so much you more than just performance lots more like screenshots zoom ins and out dance rehearsals crystal clear audio truly beautiful and amazing performance as a die hard Carrie fan this is an amazing version thanks for the upload amazing 👏👏
Linzi screaming "GOD, IT'S BLOOD!" at 1:49:55 is actually fucking terrifying by itself. The show deserved to stay for longer for her sake. She did amazing. There are reports of the crowd cheering for her during bows even after booing the play itself.
I bet the actors wished that, too. It was near impossible to hide their mic packs in their little toga-kinis, making the choreography even more difficult (particularly the floor work when they had to try not to sit directly on their mic packs).
Watching this all the way through really gives you a sense of what made this musical special. The shifts between extremes in tone in just a few bars is whiplash-inducing, but I really don’t think it was purely an accident that came from bad creative decisions. Being yanked between dark and light before you can get a grip on either of Carrie’s worlds is so unnerving and haunting. Maybe Terry Hands was seeing if the 1980’s megamusical format could handle some freudian uncanny (or uncarrie? I’ll see myself out) by pairing operatic scenes of abuse and insanity with 80s synths and lycra leotards. Who knows, but there’s certainly something in this original production that hasn’t been done before or since and has stuck with so many people for decades. Thanks for keeping it alive for people like me (born five years after the musical was staged) to discover!
The Depalma film did the same, jerking from one tone to the next, but Hands wasn’t looking to tell a horror story. It’s truly a magnetic commentary on group think and mob mentality. This is beautifully made clear in Allen’s choreography. Theatrically, I don’t think this story works in the “real world.” The story is too grand, too tragic, too THEATRE. Thank you for finding it and for your lovely words. Get the news out about it. Keep our girl thriving!
I have to thank you SO much for this. This is wonderful; especially the captions. Listening to the other productions is painful because I can only catch half of it, but the soundboard recording and the captions fixes everything. I truly think this production is so special. It has so much heart and I think captures the story of Carrie better than the revival. I love everything about this, even the avant garde staging and costuming. It is so, timeless. Even with the very 80s production. God, I love this full 80s orchestra. Can never replace that.
I will say that “Don’t Waste the Moon” is somewhat unneeded and cutting that for “The World According to Chris” is smart to give her more characterization. Still an iconic song though.
No I'm absolutely freaking out inside..... I was 14 in 1988 and knew it was happening but couldn't go because I was poor boy Indiana USA. Skip to 2017 and I discover it on RUclips, the Stratford footage and the pieces of Broadway.... I'm way stoked for this.
Holy crap I love this show. Before I found this Master cut, I had only watched the revival and had only heard negative things from the 1988 version. After watching it, it really shows how they were so close to nailing the show, but they were just missing a couple of pieces. The revival really lacks the charm and emotion the original has. Sure the revival has more of a horror feel, but the original is fun and also makes you sympathize with the characters more. It works better with a bigger cast, and Linzi and Betty are powerhouses as leads. It would be fun to see a revival with more elements from the original. Amazing job on this Master Cut!
Ahhh I wasn’t able to watch live as I had my own shows to do today, but WOW this has surpassed every expectation I had. Truly brilliant! Thank you for compiling this!!!
16:06 that line, cracked me up I'm glad they reworked the song a bit to fit her better in the revivals but that one line is accidentally the funniest thing.
oh my god im so happy i found out abt this musical when i did so i could watch this, thank you!! thank you especially for the captions lol before i found this i was convinced i'd never be able to understand what anyone was saying
Something I never noticed in It Hurts To Be Strong ...... 1:20:34 that tambourine😲😱😲 Now I'm in love with that tambourine ❤️❤️❤️ ...... I'll never not hear it ... Like the choreographed slap sound near the start of Do Me A Favor (52:46) ❤️❤️❤️
I was glad to see both Betty and Barbara, I'm eager to see the choices you've made, they're both Important, I became the type that won't pick just one, I need them both❤️❤️

So sorry if this is an incovenience, but is there a possibility that you could upload the Broadway audios by themselves again? This rendition is fantastic, but I miss the old ones ❤
The remastered Broadway soundboard became an issue when a lot of people (strangers) felt entitled to demand Dropbox links to the original files - or something like that. I was becoming bombarded. It was a lot of unfortunate behavior, so I decided to take that recording down. I wish that wasn’t the case, and I’m sorry to not be able to share it anymore.
@@ErikChampneyI ended up finding a different audio. Its not your remaster by any means, but its the plain broadway. Thank you for letting me know, and I'll be sure to support your content 🌚👍🏻
I really don't understand why everyone hated this yeah the 2012 version probably fixed it to make the script more coherent. For the most part I don't hate the aesthetics of this version. Yeah the Greek toga inspired looks are a bit much but toning those down and the rest of the show is actually pretty cool. I want this back on Broadway so bad! ❤
I laughed when I saw “Lighting Design: Terry Hands.” According to others who worked on this show he spent so much time on lighting he ended up ignoring his directorial duties.
@@keetard I'm not sure if it would have been better or worse if he spent more time focusing on directing. The man made a ton of incredibly bad decisions but the parts he spent the most hands on time with, the scenes between Carrie and Margaret, are the best in the show. Maybe if he hadn't basically left the directing of the school scenes to Debbie Allen they would have been better, or maybe they would have been even weirder.
I dont know if im dumb but i always thought Crackerjack was better than Out for blood also I always thought that in stratford it was called Crackerjack/Out for blood because the parts that Billy sang were Crackerjack and what Chris was singing is Out for blood also i think that white star is better than it hurts to be strong but thats just my opinion
ngl i feel like the hate train for out for blood/crackerjack is so forced like it get back than it would have been considered “bad” but now that we have musicals like “mean girls” i feel like there are way worse songs like i actually love out for blood.

I so wish they’d kept them in the rehearsal gear for in!!
Disagreed, the white and red toga uniform is much more meaningful symbolically.
I bet the actors wished that, too. It was near impossible to hide their mic packs in their little toga-kinis, making the choreography even more difficult (particularly the floor work when they had to try not to sit directly on their mic packs).
It needed that reality. Not white toga's. A main flaw of the show.
I'm about 1 minute in and my jaw is dropped. What a gift! Thank you for this!
This is magnificent
Thank you! Spread the word and keep her alive!
you are truly a saint! thank you for this, it's wonderful!
Spread the word! ♥️
Still an iconic song though.

is anybody else absolutely hyped for this??? or j me
No I'm absolutely freaking out inside..... I was 14 in 1988 and knew it was happening but couldn't go because I was poor boy Indiana USA. Skip to 2017 and I discover it on RUclips, the Stratford footage and the pieces of Broadway....
I'm way stoked for this.
I've watched this three times all the way through--absolutely great work!
That’s a wonderful compliment, Eric. Thank you!

Thanks for this love letter to the show. Glad these amazing talents are available for more people to experience.
Wow, what an incredible amount of effort you've put into this wonderful cut. I hope the creative team see it one day!
I have it on very good authority that they love it. Thank God.
Thank you for watching! I’m so happy you’ve found the original! Spread the word and let’s keep her alive ♥️
Thank you for making this!! Your hard work does not go unnoticed, we are all really really thankful for this
Ahhh I wasn’t able to watch live as I had my own shows to do today, but WOW this has surpassed every expectation I had. Truly brilliant! Thank you for compiling this!!!
Wow. Thank you so much.
Enjoy it!
16:06 that line, cracked me up I'm glad they reworked the song a bit to fit her better in the revivals but that one line is accidentally the funniest thing.
Erik Champney this is awesome thank you for doing these videos.
Great work on this version. I had downloaded one many moons ago but this version far exceeds that. Thanks

The revival version of the destruction simply doesn't hit the same
Debby was kinda was right when she said "you could say that it was Fame with a Macabre ending or you could say its Sweeney Todd for children"

@@XoXoDazzlingDolls there are some people who are extremely protective of their bootlegs. I used to be that way, until I realized what’s the point of loving this show if I’m not going to share it with people to keep it alive? lol
@@ErikChampney I guess I can understand but I think if I found some new footage from a show that has so much missing footage I would share it in a heartbeat especially if it was something like When there's no one or The Destruction

❤️🔥💝👑💝❤️🔥
I laughed when I saw “Lighting Design: Terry Hands.” According to others who worked on this show he spent so much time on lighting he ended up ignoring his directorial duties.
As he should, his lighting design is phenomenal.
@@morganalabeille5004 Tbh, good for him. His overall direction for it is a modernized Greek drama that makes sense in itself, and it shows.
1:59:25 the footage that includes Betty's Broadway bow where is that video from?
Hey there. It’s from this documentary on producer Friedrich Kurz: ruclips.net/video/lku_tJ76_3I/видео.htmlsi=GrLBiuQLGn9PTwrO
