No shade to Ensemble work (I’ve been in many an ensemble), but imagine sticking Shoshana Bean in the Ensemble. So happy she was able become the star she is!!
Shoshana was the glorious tip of an iceberg. This ensemble was one of the most ridiculously talented ensembles in Broadway history. Going from number to number to number without much downtime. Leaping over orchestra pits. The flawless formation choreography of the Hair Hop. Ponying the entire length of the stage and back while sustaining a wall of sound and flawless three, four, six part harmonies. And doing it all in wigs and sweaters! I wish they had been recognized with a Tony. I’m so glad this recording exists.
Just realized that the girl who leaving for 9 months… it just hit me she might’ve been pregnant. All this time being a fan of hairspray and never catching this 😭
I’m not super in lot any live performances with this musical, I grew up on the movie with zac efron, but I’m enjoying this a lot, I love all the the actresses who have rotated Tracy, this one, the original film Tracy and the most recent film adaptation (2007 I think), I can hear the bells was great, such a great song in general, I loved the mama I’m a big girl, I thought it humanized amber character for a bit, I also love this amber, shes so funny, and mama welcome to the 60’s was amazing, the 3 women in the red dresses, I assume it’s not always the same ppl of course, but I always get excited about those bits of the song when they sing, it always sounds so beautiful, I have a lot to say just from the first act, I do have a lot of things I don’t like, but so far I overall am enjoying this a lot, another great hairspray production with another great cast and team 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

If I’m not mistaken this was during broadway previews so it was pretty early on in his run as Edna. Since he’s a pretty well known broadway performer I’m not surprised he got such a long applause.
this is a million times better then the 2007 adaptation, my sister used to watch that to death as a child and it really did ruin my enjoyment of the musical. seeing this however has made realise how much the film left out and how well written the musical really is!. well done to the bloke who recorded this, wonder how he managed to hide his camera?.
