It speaks volumes for an actor to play a character so well that they are truly hated! I remember when Titanic came out, Billy Zane had to shave his head and constantly hide his identity because people hated HIM so much for how well he was despised in the movie!!!

What's really insane is that the majority of the actors who play these despised characters are the total opposite in real life. Pretty much all of them are actually down to earth sweethearts. It's crazy that it would usually take one movie role for them to be universally hated and feared by the masses. But remember, hate the character, not the actor playing them. It just shows how good they play the part.

Donald Sutherland did a great job of playing President Cornelius Snow in the Hunger Games series. But I hate President Alma Coin from Hunger Games: Mockingjay even more. At least Snow was honest the whole time and showed he was always an asshole. But Coin was two-faced who used and backstabbed many people, including the hero of the Hunger Game series, Katniss Everdeen. And her actions caused the death of many people, including Katniss' sister, Prim.
That is why I loved it when everyone expected Katniss to kill Snow, she instead shot and killed Coin instead. But Snow did still get his comeuppance as he is also killed during a riot that ensued after Katniss terminated Coin. And that is the testament of how wonderful of a job Julianne Moore did playing Coin. I really hated her and even more than Snow.

Denethor does not. The most indefensible aspect of Jackson's adaptation of LotR was the translation of Denethor from the tragic figure of the books to the sybaritic buffoon of the films. Anyone who had read the books before seeing the films would be too annoyed about this misadaptation to be able to hate the actual character of Denethor.

    • @jaredwonnacott9732

I read the books first. Thought Denethor was scum regardless. I thought his portrayal in the films was great and worked exceptionally well. Sure, they never mentioned he had a palantir or that Sauron was manipulating him for years, but, we weren't supposed to feel Sauruman was a tragic figure, and he fell in essentially the same way. I didn't really ever see him as tragic, just weak.
Regardless, Denethor in the movies is just the worst. I'm currently rewatching after another reread, and we haven't even gotten to Gondor yet and I already despise him for his role in the breaking of the fellowship and the fall of Boromir, something that didn't stand out to me as much until this run through.
