      He said he got a captain, then discarded that card as a duke. So he clearly didn't have a duke in the beginning of the game, and we'll never know what that card was. Probably an assassin which he was saving as backup while calling it a duke to build up assassination money.

  • @The_Intelligent_One

    Little correction of rules of Coup, for anyone interested (I can't really tell if they played right from the video, so maybe they were):
    1. When someone loses a card it's not random. The person who loses it can choose which one he/she discards.
    2. The way the ambassador works is that you take two cards from the deck exchange them with your cards however you like (you can swap 0,1 or 2 or just pretend) then shuffle back the two cards you're not keeping.
    3. Most people keep forgetting this, but when someone wins a challenge by showing they had the card they claimed they shuffle that card back into the deck before drawing a new one, so there's a chance that they'll draw the exact same card they put back.
    Anyway I loved the video. I may actually get a version of Love Letter ( I saw there are a bunch)

      G&S owners, Legendary Entertainment, wanted to push their streaming platform hard, and forced Tabletop, among others, to focus on that platform.
      Wheaton didn't agree with that decision, and apparently there were other issues behind the scene as well. He even sued them over a breach of contract unrelated to Tabletop. IIRC he won the lawsuit.
      Legendary seems to have royally fucked themselves, with some rather large money makers fleeing fast (see Critical Role's earnings nowadays).

    You're supposed to shuffle the cards back into the deck when you reveal one of your cards from a challenge.

    • @ChrisBrownSPE
      @ChrisBrownSPE 9 лет назад +49

      Pad Ster They also borked the Ambassador role. You should be drawing 2 cards, choosing 2, and putting 2 back. Having it be a 1 for 1 exchange makes it a pathetically weak card.

    • @rockxhero
      @rockxhero 9 лет назад +1

      Pad Ster for Coup? I was wondering about that, because that's how we played it too. The way they played it I feel would shorten the game & allow deductive card counting (since I believe there are 3 of each character).

    • @ChrisBrownSPE
      @ChrisBrownSPE 9 лет назад +1

      ***** I don't think you're allowed to pretend to fail a challenge. Not to mention, it doesn't sound like a good tactic.

    • @rmsgrey
      @rmsgrey 9 лет назад +7

      Chris Brown You are allowed to deliberately fail a challenge by revealing a non-matching character - it's unlikely to be a good tactic, but there are some edge cases where it might pay off (and if you're playing the long-game, throwing off people who think they can read you is a benefit)
      There's a thread over on BoardGameGeek where Rikki Tahta (Coup's creator) clarified the matter.

    • @rockxhero
      @rockxhero 9 лет назад

      Chris Brown That's a good question, I'm not sure if a player is allowed to bluff failing a challenge or not! One can't fake winning a challenge though. But WNivek may be right!

      Coup Rules: This is accurate, as far as when I played, too.It really is a different game, and I think a ton more fun, in addition to being the rule.If cards go back into the deck, then it is harder to figure out what role someone is. The ambassador becomes much more valuable. And by the way, I saw little card switching in this game of coup. The assassin is a great bluff if you don't have someone you'd like because switching cards is not a risk someone usually wants to call you out on.Anyway, Coup is great, and like The Resistance, has a high social aspect, though sometimes you have to give it a break after spending a lot of time lying to your friends :)

    FOR THE RECORD: In COUP, I'm pretty sure when someone challenges one of your cards and you win, you don't discard the card (turning it face up), you shuffle it back in the deck and draw a new card. If you loose a card from being couped, assasinated, or lose a challenge, then the card does actually get turned face up (and stays that way). I don't think that's the way they were playing. Sorry Wil. You're great. I still love you.

    • @David-ez5hh
      @David-ez5hh 7 месяцев назад

      I own the game and in the rules its explicitly if any card is removed from any person's possession that it returns to the deck and gets shuffled. This is especially beneficial for 6 person games which is the game's max player limit and there being 15 cards in the deck *3 copies per role*

    I think they were wrong about the cards... You aren't the card in your hand. I think that is who YOU, the player, are passing love letters to to get them to the princess. So, if you have the princess card, then you're writing directly to her and not passing the notes to someone else first...

    • @uncopyrightabled
      @uncopyrightabled 9 лет назад +74

      thisisatonofbs Yes, the description says the players themselves are the Suitors trying for the hand of the Princess (and don't forget the kingdom that goes with it). The cards are the members of the court that the players get to carry their love letters.

    • @Shawn4168
      @Shawn4168 9 лет назад +47

      thisisatonofbs Pretty much, yes. If you discard the Princess card, it's like saying the Princess had your letter and ripped it up, because she's not interested or she was caught with the letter. That's why it's an instant loss for you.

    • @Flumong
      @Flumong 9 лет назад +19

      Indeed. A round represents a day. At the end of the day, the mail carrier that is closest to the princess (left-corner number) slips her the letter and she goes to her chambers to read it.

    In Love Letter, the characters in the cards aren't writing letters to the princess. We, the players, write the letters, and the person we hold in our hand is the person that has our letter at the moment. At the end of the day (the deck runs out) we want our letter to be the only one or to be in possession of the person closest to the princess (the higher the number, the closer to the princess). If your character gets caught with your letter, they burn it (you're out of the round) and the next morning the princess talks about her suitor during breakfast (so the winner of a round begins next round). I really like how the game tells a story via gameplay. This is why a guard can't accuse another guard, they are the same character holding multiple letters from different players.

  • @Official_Rik

    Whenever I play this with my friends, it inevitably devolves into throwing down guards and yelling "YOU HAVE THE BARON" until everyone's dead. It's great.

    1) flavour in Love Letter is that the card in your hand is who currently holds your letter - on your turn, they can hand it off and act on your behalf, or keep it and get someone else to intervene for you. This is why you can't name Guard with a Guard (that and it would be boring) - there's only one Guard and she's not about to frisk herself...
    2) In the Tempest edition of Love Letter, you're supposed to keep your individual discards for a tie-breaker - if, say, the highest cards left are the two Princes, then the tied players compare their discards and whoever discarded the highest total value wins the tie (if it's still tied, then tough)
    3) The only cards removed from the game in Coup are the lost influence - cards revealed to prove you had them go back in the deck (and are shuffled in before you draw your replacement card)
    4) The Ambassador lets you draw two cards from the deck, and put two cards back, not just replace one.

    2 Issues with the episode:
    1.IN the Coup rules when you "Ambassador" and trade cards with the deck or you get called out and proved that you were not lying...the cards go back into the deck they don't go to the discard pile.
    2. Might be my monitor, but it looks like the makeup person screwed up. there is a ton of yellow blotch on everyone's face and neck.
    But great episode, good people...and damn Wil I want to play Coup against you. My daughter and I will play this game for hours and she is the only person that can beat me in our group of 10. Bring is Wheaton! See who will get in whos head then sucka!

    Interesting. I always interpreted the plot for Love Letter differently. YOU were trying to write to her and your card is the character in which you get that letter to her. So having the Princess card meant you were giving the letters to her directly. Having a King meant you were using the King to deliver the letters and so on. You competed with the others for success letter delivery and the person with the most letters wins!

    I freaking love Love Letter! I do like the Kanai Factory edition better, not only for its aesthetic appeal but also because if you have the 7 (which in that version is the Minister instead of the Countess) and 5, 6, or 8 at the same time in your hand you are out of the game. It makes it a bit more challenging by making that card a double-edged sword.

      ***** Pretty much. Taste in gaming is pretty wildly varied, so it doesn't surprise me that I met my mirror in this area. imaloony8 how do you feel about One Night?

    • @imaloony8
      @imaloony8 9 лет назад +2

      SuperWolfkin I don't like werewolf much either, really. Part of the problem is that I used to go to a large Board Game club and games of werewolf usually absorbed most of the club for several hours, which made it really difficult to play any non-werewolf game, so I've got a bias against it from the start. I also dislike these games where one person can get booted out right from the start and then gets to sit by with their thumbs up their butt doing nothing for the rest of the game. In a short game like Coup that's not a problem, but Werewolf games can go long depending on how big the group is and how much they debate each decision. Like I said, it's a game that kinda screws a few people out of fun, so I'm pretty heavily against playing it when one of my friends suggests it.

      For one cards that are revealed does not get eliminated from the game, they are shuffled back in the deck. The only cards that are eliminated are cards that player discards for lost influence. Duke can't block stealing and Assassin can't back on an assassination attempt.

    "The producers are telling me we are out of time." I found that VERY interesting. This is a show that is edited, so it would seem like a time limit would be imposed in editing, not during filming. The only things I can figure are A) the producers have a set raw footage to episode length ratio and knew they were up against it, or B) one of the players needed to go, and they didn't want that revealed in the episode. One thing that did impact this was the inability to skip ahead, since these games were shorter.

    Love this show and Wil Wheaton, so this is a contribution, not a critique. I counted three errors in the Coup rules. (1) If you have to turn your card over to prove who you are and you're actually who you said you were your card gets shuffled back into the deck and you pick a new card. If you weren't who you said you were, you turn your card over and leave it there in front of you as your second influence/card (but you can't use it anymore). (2) If you try to assassinate someone, you are bluffing, and they call you on it, you do not have to turn in your three coins (but you do lose an influence/card and you get to choose which card you lose). If you were the assassin but the player you attempted to assassinate claims a Contessa to block but you don't challenge the Contessa, you lose your three coins as the assassination attempt failed. (3) Anyone can challenge another player at any time if they think they are bluffing--not just the player who is in the defensive position.
