  • Today we taste and review Wild Turkey 101 bourbon whiskey and compare it to Wild Turkey "Classic".
    Check out the Instagram account @whiskey_marketing_school
    ** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
    Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:
    austinwhiskyvault.com/whisky-d...
    ** What's with the necklaces?
    Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
    See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
    Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
    **A Whisk(e)y school?
    Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
    ** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
    Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
    Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
    It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
    ** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
    Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
    The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
    ** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
    There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
    Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
    There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
    Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

    81 = $16.50
    101 = $22
    They literally have exactly a 25% different in price here. That's hilarious.

      @@PapaWheelie1 I like the more mellowed taste of the 81. 101 is okay, but it doesn't handle the higher alcohol percentage as well as other bourbons.

    Please, do some cheap whiskey that is only cheap by price. Old grandad bonded, old grandad 114, Ezra Brooks 90 or Evan Williams bonded. I'm a huge fan of lower priced whiskey that drinks above its price point. Oh, and on another note Koval. Huge fan and glad you are doing the Turkey. Cheers, mate.

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  6 лет назад +6

      Out of those, the Ezra is my favorite.

    • @KatiePhongh
      @KatiePhongh 6 лет назад +5

      I like the Old Gran-Dad Bonded 100 proof. It's young enough that it isn't going to choke you to death with the wood tannin in the finish. It is a high rye mash bill and it's high proof and spiciness makes it perfectly compatible with ice for a hot day. While it's depth isn't going to boggle your mind for hours, at $20 it is a whiskey bargain.

    The basics are always good. Wild Turkey is a good foundation bourbon, good for mixing. Wild Turkey 101, Longbranch, and Rare Breed are beginning to step up to the next levels of quality with more complexity. Sometimes though you just want a baseline bourbon. Wild Turkey was my entry into bourbon and I still like it. Though now with Ezra Brooks 90 it is a definite competition in my humble opinion. May you all enjoy the whiskey you love!

    First time Commenter here, and after finally making it through all of your videos and hitting the refresh button on my screen at least 5 times, I am asking myself: "Now What?" I cheered in the beginning when Rex finally got a new shirt, praised the whisk(e)y gods when Rex developed "The Mooch Necklace", had my mind blown and marveled at Daniel's intelligence when he dropped the epiphanic "I just bought new underwear" wisdom bomb, and laughed until I sprayed Glendronach 18 all over my monitor at the Holy Whistlepig tale, but now am empty inside with the worst case of Binge Watchers' Remorse.

    I could not find the first bottle. But i did find the 101 at 46$, and the Rye at 72$. They also had the rare breed bourbons from Wild turkey at 88$
    So even a rare breed special edition of wild turkey is somewhat affordable here in Denmark. thats not bad.
    So even though it might be considered "budget" in the states, it is actually something special over here, mainly to do with supply and demand

    Around my area, Wild Turkey 101 is the mainstay, and it's priced usually in the 22 to 30 dollar range with WT 81 usually priced at the same price point. The large liquor stores sell the WT 81 under 16 dollars while the bigger box retailers actually try to sell the WT 81 at a higher price than WT 101 simply because they order a smaller quantity of WT 81 to sell over WT 101.

    I use Wild Turkey 101 all the time. Straight, in a Hot Toddy or to cook with. I like to explore various whiskey brands but Wild Turkey is a staple in my home.

    Wild Turkey is my go to budget bottle. It’s decent mixed, it’s decent on the rocks. Solid little whiskey.

    I remember wreckless youth, testing a build school new roommate with 101 telling him 1/4 of the bottle was night 1 tradition. He didn't take it so well, but we split the bottle as a house and the other 2 roommates and I had a great time.

    Bought a bottle of the 81 today because I had heard it was a great cheap bourbon. Totally agree with your assessment, it is smooth, but mostly tasteless. Ah well, it was only $20, and I need something recognizable to pawn off on those only looking to get drunk.

    The 101 is only 15% more expensive here in Ontario, Canada. But couldn't be bothered to water it down myself, would just stick with the 101.

    hell yeah!! The Mooch read my comment on the show. so f**king excited about that must of showed a dozen of people by now your show and you guys saying my name on it. you didn't really cover the question like what kind of barrels you use, how long you leave it in the barrel before serving or your favorite cocktails to make in one, but i don't care thats what google is for.
    keep up the very entertaining show

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  6 лет назад +2

      Yeah, we really didn't answer the question. That's how we roll :-)
      I normally use the smallest barrel I can. Even 1 liter barrels are fine. New American Oak with a mild char (#2 or #3) and leave it in until it tastes good.

    Okay, just saw a bottle over Danial's shoulder called "Writer's Tears." As a writer that instantly had me rushing to go look it up. It's an Irish whiskey, apparently. Has there been a review of it done yet, and if so what episode? Thanks for the channel. Great story research, source by the way.

    Costco makes a 101 whiskey, Tennessee Bourbon, for around the same price, but the bottle is so much smaller than Wild Turkey's. I love to put a shot of this in a mug of 11% alcohol content beer, makes a great boiler maker.

    So, since I am all caught up on the videos now, I have been going back through them and reading through all of the comments. In one of the episodes (or was it in the comments) you mentioned that unlike wine, barrels of whiskey aren't topped up. I am curious as to how much whiskey remains in, say, an 8 year versus a 21 year old barrel.
    As a winemaker, I have to top up my barrels monthly. I typically have to add about 2 liters to each barrel each month.

      The "Angel Share" in whisky is a definite thing. It depends on weather, barrels, age of barrels and whisky, humidity and alcohol content. But the basic industry average is around 2% per year. So, if you have a 53 gallon barrel, after 8 years you could lose around 7 gallons. After 21 years you could lose as much as 20 gallons

    101 used to be aged statement, but is no longer the case. It's still good though but i prefer their other ranges like the Forgiven, and rare breed. Their Masters Keep is awesome too, but a bit pricey for what it is.

    Have you tried mixing 101 and Rare Breed? I was running low on both and wanted a sipper without feeling too much burn and felt the Rare Breed lacked something when I added a touch of water, yet 101 lacked something in general but was decent... I mixed 1oz of WT 101 and 1 oz of Rare Breed and really quite like it. I love 81 as a mixer with ginger ale... nothing else other thin a high rye canadian rye seems to work as well in the mix... Buffalo Trace was sooo washed out yet plain old WT stood up in the mix... which is what you want in a mixer... I tried 101 in a mix but hate myself for doing it... especially at the price... 101 here is generally north of $45 Luckily lately I've found Rare Breed and 101 for $39 so have been indulging... I quite like the mix of 101 and Rare Breed 50/50 (haven't tried other precentages)

    I did a blind taste test of Crown Royal Black, Wild Turkey 101, Maker's Mark, and Jack Daniels No. 7, at first I chose the Maker's Mark, but then wavered, and went to the Wild Turkey. I'm no connoisseur, so I was probably judging based on smoothness. But I had at #1 Wild Turkey, #2 Maker's Mark, #3 Jack Daniels, and at a distant 4th, the Crown Royal.
