  • Today we review and taste Wild Turkey Rare Breed bourbon and compare it to Russell's Reserve 10.

** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:
    austinwhiskyvault.com/whisky-d...
    ** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
    **A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

Wild Turkey should start making a rye whisky just so Matthew Mcconaughey can advertise it as an "ALL-RYE, ALL-RYE, ALL-RYE"

Great review, I also love Russell's 10. As far as rare breed goes, I didn't get any burn from it just lots of cinnamon. But I can understand your point, I suggested the bartender try some, and he actually shot it. You could tell he was in pain for a while 😎

There should be a "Wall of Magnificence" in the vault, where all of the donors and gift-givers have a small name plaque on the wall. The higher on the wall, the higher the donation and/or the most gifts given, hence the more magnificence. Just a thought.

I bought a half bottle of Rare Breed as my second whiskey on the heels of a bottle of Maker's Mark. I was excited when I saw this review because its the first chance I've had (other than the livestream) to actually taste with you guys. I remember noticing the sparkly nature of it the first time i tried it, so it's good to know what I got the same out of it that the pros do :D I also realized that both were bourbons, so I am intending on trying an Irish next, then a Scotch.

I love rare breed. Since I discovered it 2 years ago, after realizing that it was a wild Turkey product. Although it's on the tobacco, oak and smoky spectrum of bourbons. But what a beautiful flavor

So I am fairly new to drinking whiskey/bourbon +/- 1yr but I’ve tried a lot of different varieties and have discovered that I like it neat. My favorite is 1. WT RB BP 116 2. Russell’s reserve SB 3. WT Longbranch. This thanksgiving had a $90 bottle of Blantons and hated it? Guess I have a type....

I’ve tried a handful of bourbons now, and I came back to Wild Turkey 101 and was impressed 😯 it’s actually pretty good, and you can’t argue with the price! I would take it over most anything at its price range (and just above). If I were to “upgrade” I’d upgrade to an age statement or another high proof whiskey.

I’ve been a rare breed guy for a couple years now but I’ve been moving towards Russell’s Single barrel as of late. It’s 110 proof. Just a little lower than the rare breed it and I think it’s a little more fruity but with less tobacco flavor and I’ve been diggin the heck out of it. Russell’s 10 is awesome but I wish you had compared the higher proof single barrel version to the rare breed cuz I I’ve been happy to shell out the extra 10$ for it these days :)

I didn't drink before finding this channel (via modern rogue), it was your descriptions of the flavor notes that enticed me into trying whisky. I have 5 bottles now... within a month...
I saw Rare Breed on sale at the store, and got it to try alongside this video.

A few weeks ago at my local whisky store's Friday Tasting, I got to try the Western Canadian Exclusive of the Amrut Single Malt, Single Cast (portpipe). There is usually a bottle of watter handy, but no one could find it, so the rep pulled out his bottle of Perrier and I added a drop or two of it. The carbonation dissipated instantly, but I was pleasantly surprised at how it changed the whisky. It tasted effervescent and the flavours just popped in my mouth. The rep and I got talking about how Scotch & Soda really is a classic way to enjoy whisky. I then had the old Kingston Trio song stuck in my head for the rest of the day...

WhiskyFest San Francisco was last weekend and holy shit was it an awesome experience. Coolest thing that happened: I was poured Compass Box by Jon Glaser! I about died! It was so cool to talk to him about his blends and transparency in the industry. Also met Allison Parc of Brenne. Didn't care for her whisky, which is unfortunate bc she was amazing and I'm all about women in whiskey. She's doing her thing though. Also drank Pappy with Preston and Julian Van Winkle. Too bad Jim McEwan wasn't there bc he's on my list. But I did find out he's working on a new Islay distillery called Ardnahoe set to open next year. That's badass!

I found this channel after watching the Modern Rouge. Great channel! I have always enjoyed whisk(e)y. I only had it once in a while. My uncle introduced me to Buffalo Trace and the rest is history. I have wanted to hone in my tasting and smelling senses. But here is my question: Where do you start enhancing or training those senses. I mean i can get the caramel flavors, but finding those subtle flavors and smells... How do you do it??? Thanks guy! Looking forward to hearing more on the new distillery!
I am #teamcookie But, I do love my dad jokes.

It simply takes practice. There are a few kits out there that can help (google whisky aroma kit), and tasting sheets are really helpful to keep flavors in the front of your mind. We recommend this one: whiskeysmiths.com/whisky-deductive-tasting/

Love these guys. Sampling my two favorite whiskeys (so far) in this video. For me, the Russel's 10 is better, the Rare Breed is wildly different from year to year. "Rare Breed is an adventure, Russel's 10 coming home" spot on description. The mooch gave me the tip of putting a bit of whiskey on my hands, rubbing them together. The residual smell gives you hints about subtler taste notes. Works really well on both of these. I raise a glass of Russel's 10 to you, my whiskey brothers and sisters.

My ultimate whiskey mooch story is this: for my birthday my sister and brother in law bought me a nice bottle of Texas Bourbon. Friday they were having a get together and it was a BYOB/Pot luck type of alcohol set up where if you didn't bring something you couldn't drink anything there. My sister asked for recommendations from me and I told her that Knob Creek and Sheep Dip were a good bang for the buck and good taste too. The bottle I used as my entrance ticket was my gifted Garrison Bros bourbon. It was a great night of sampling I had the opportunity to sample rums, vodkas, beers, and wines. At the end of the night i came to learn that no one but me it turns out liked whiskey, bourbon, or scotch and so I left with my untouched bottle of mooched Garrison Bros, 1 new whiskey, and one blended scotch to add to my personal collection. I go in with 1 bottle, drink everyone else's supply, and leave with 3. That is what I call a productive days mooching.

Hi Guys! I really like this channel. I love the combination of knowledge and humor that is brought out here. I was hoping I could get some help/input on a couple of things and any suggestions from the comments is more than welcome too. (I posted this on another vid but didn't realize i was looking at something older, so i got no feedback)
First - I've been looking to get a bottle or two of Rye whiskey for a friend for Christmas. I happen to know via a mutial friend he prefers Rye or Bourbon or Scotch. Since most of my experience is in beer and cocktails, I've been trying to do some research to find something fun or that he may not have tried before. Right now I've been thinking about Angel's Envy Rye, Michter's US-1 Rye (either straight or cask strength if I can find it) and Sazerac Rye. what do you guys think and/or do you have any other suggestions?
Second - Due to some very unfortunate circumstances I am currently kinda forced to live in Des Moines Iowa, and while this city seems to have some really wonderful and diverse beer selections, I am not finding much in the way of variety or selection on whiskeys. It also seems that this is a state that online retailers cannot or will not ship to. Does anyone know of other options or have other suggestions on how to get good whiskeys short of moving to another state?
Thanks to anyone who has any info or suggestions.

    • @seanhancock9881
      @seanhancock9881 6 лет назад

Thank you for the input! I have checked a couple of those places already, but found out that each Hy-vee has its own stock/inventory so I'll drive around to a few more and check them out. Since posting this I also found out that Iowa has a "book" that is the approved whiskey list for retail and Angel's Envy was taken out of it about a year ago so unless i can find an old bottle on the shelf I'll probably have to look else where for it. Omaha is only 2 hours away, maybe I could check there on a day trip or something.
Also I was able to find Sazerac at a Hy-Vee so that is one down. I almost got a Michters too but when i was in checkout I looked at the bottle one more time and realized i had the straight bourbon instead of the straight rye which they didn't have. I'll definately look into that High West Campfire or Double Rye too. so thanks for that suggestion.
Also I've seen some Iowa whiskey and rye called Cedar Ridge. Anyone know if its any good or not?

Hey, I brought that whiskey because of another comment you made about pouring mint juleps out of a can. The fact that I knew you wouldn't like it was just the cherry on top.

Rex Thanks. I don't believe I need to mention how magnificent you are. You show it five days a week. And since you said I mooched level two, should I replace the strap around my medallion with a tube sock?

if you mooch the tubesock, it's an instant level 10.

You should compare Rare Breed with Russel's Reserve Single Barrel Select at 55%/110proof.

I will be forever cursed by living in a country where most of these whiskies are impossible to get a hold of, and if they are, they're almost twice as expensive as in the US! Maybe one day I might savour the sweet nectar of totalwine's whisky selection... until then, cheers.

If you had 300/350$ to spend on a bottle, what would you first choice be? Hard question I know, but I am going to buy something in that bracket and want a Som and mooch pick.

    Daniel, I need your help
Last weekend I got a bottle of my favourite whisky, like I do every month. I've always gotten very typical rye flavours from this whisky; sweet brown sugar, spicy rye grain, cinnamon, citrus, and subtle vanilla, all in beautiful harmony. My perfect whisky.
Then, on my third glass, out of nowhere I got a hint of dill. And now that I know it's there I can't ignore it. Which would be fine, if I didn't absolutely despise dill. And now I've inadvertently ruined my favourite whisky.
Has anything like this ever happened to you guys? Am I destined to wander the whisky aisles looking for a replacement that will never be as good?

    • @christosdoukakis301
      @christosdoukakis301 6 лет назад

The whisky in question is Lot No. 40 single copper pot still Canadian rye. I'd recommend it to any rye lovers out there, if you like dill.

I finally found a way to get the bottles of whiskey I want. Step 1 bring S.W.M.B.O. to the liquor store show her the Crystal Skull Vodka bottle and let her pick what she wants. Step 2 spend a LOT of time looking through the Scotch aisle. Step 3 walk over to the burbon aisle. Step 4 wait until S.W.M.B.O. has her hands full of bottles she wants. Step 5 wait until she says "Just get the Angel's Wings and that other bottle." Step 6 take the Angel's Envy and Ardbeg 10 and walk to the cash register with confidence.
I really need to figure out how to get her in the store that has the Ardbeg Dark Cove behind the counter.
