  • Staff at Bristol Zoo have bid its Clifton site a fond farewell as it prepares to close after 186 years.
The zoo opened in 1836, making it the fifth oldest zoo in the world.
Its owner, the Bristol Zoological Society, is closing the site due to pandemic-induced financial pressures.
Animals are moving to a new, more spacious safari-style park in south Gloucestershire.
Dr Grainne McCabe, head of field conservation and science said: “I think that, in the end, it will be a much, much more enjoyable experience for [the animals] in a more natural enclosure.”

It’s in Clifton, of course it’s being sold to developers. The land is far too valuable for it to stay a zoo. And too valuable to be turned into a park. Each house or flat (whatever they will be) will sell for a fortune.
The upside is, of course, the animals will be much happier having lots of room to run around their large enclosures.

Why the sad music? Citizens of Bristol as a whole support this being bulldozed, paved over and turned into a sink estate.

@@soylentroy7585 The same orginasation who owns the old Bristol Zoo builds the new Zoo. They just build a larger a newer one outside of the city center.
Animals will not be put down. They will move to the new location, or other zoos. What zoos do all the time.

Aww that's such a shame it's closing after all those years & it will be a Big miss to a lot of people, but on the other hand I adore to see animals with a lot of space, grass, water, tree's etc rather than concrete & twigs, it's like us being locked up in prison but we know they're Truly Innocent 💔 you can see the difference it makes to the animals when they go from small space & cages to live in for years then to lush green grass hopefully with a pool etc & Yes many animals have cried & smiled with relief & happiness 😍💓 I'm not saying this or any other zoo was horrible to them but it's a fact that they also die lot younger being in zoo's rather than a more open places, wishing you all good luck with everything. I applaud your sentiment, but some if your facts are wrong. Plus zoos provide an unfortunately necessary way for some species to survive, when their habitats are destroyed and they have nowhere safe to return to the wild. I would love all animals to be free but its not that simple. Plus many animals live longer in captivity due to more reliable supplies of food compared with the wild. However it is sad that this place is closing after all this time.

they're probably more safe in a zoo than being some predators prey in the jungle.

@@rosk1 like I said Most zoo's ain't horrible to animals, I was pointing to the fact that large animals don't have enough space bc of a lot of other animals & land situation, I'm not saying anything against Any zoo & yes I agree they're sometimes safer in zoo's or the sanctuary from poaches etc & again I agree some do live longer & help to breed especially the animals that find it hard, the point I was saying is I'd prefer the animals in larger enclosure's with more grass, tree's & pool etc & them just walking & playing around with their babies like in other sanctuaries for animals that can't be released into Wild, I know it'll not be as big but just bit more room for all of them & ppl who work with & study them have said for years they get lonely, depressed & sometimes give up, many zoo's only have maybe 1-2 if they're lucky but most animals are from big Pack Families, that's when the animals give up especially if been taken from their families in the wild like many have & none of them will forget that & it'll be like PTSD. I am so happy to learn about this, l have always thought the Bristol Zoo was to restrictive for the animals, especially the Gorillas who were cooped up behind glass whilst the humans had a huge area to play about in.
