    this mix is perfect. there's nothing more that can be done to it and there's nothing that can be taken away. Rarely can an artist say their work is finished because they aren't really sure where that point is and when to stop ...but this mix is absolutely finished.

    If you went through the layers of the transition tracks (for instance the fire crackling at the start of ‘Fire by the Silos’) that would be class!

    Massive wall of sound on the album, never realized how many layers/mics/room mics were blended together to archieve this!

    Just watched this during lunch with all 19 of my lab staff and students. Those who weren't interested before are now. Brilliant work, Unpleasant Mark! Thanks very much to you and Ibea Badass for taking the time to show us how the magic happens! Really interesting and informative.

    Thank you so much for this, I learned a lot. Particularly interesting to me was that every instrument had room mics on it - I never realized that this would be something you'd want to do on bass.

    • @bennyelsensohn9299

      Yeah it is incredible how it adds to the mix. Check out the video from forrester savell where he shows deadman by karnivool. The bass played live with the drums and you can hear the bass on the drum channels and vice versa. This gives it the glue of the rooms. Very in interesting to watch! :)

    • @markrobertsproducerenginee945
      @markrobertsproducerenginee945  4 года назад +1

      Chris Walton yeah man, depending on your room it can be very useful. As “glue” but also to sit it back and make it a bit more 3D. Similar effect can be achieved with a good convolution reverb if you’re not in a big/nice room. Thanks so much for watching! 🥗🙌

    Hey Mark, awesome job indeed. I also liked Rebea's reference to the Karnivool album Sound Awake, it is by far one of my favourites and I can hear some in this work pointing in that direction. Rebea is right, you are a fine good producer by far. Keep that vibe mate, and my life will look much much fullfilled🤟🏻

    Mr. Rabea Massaad: put a link on your channel, cause this video is amazing and 675 klicks in 13 hours is just not enough! I am no professional, just playing at home and recording for exercises and fun. Lot into the IMMENSE sound of Toska songs. This video is an eye opener on how to achieve some immense sound, the lvl of detail and the work behind the scene. To see and hear how different stages of gain, effects like rev. and del., using different mic positions (or IRs , close mic, room mic) and the use of synth or modulation underneath a guitar track have an effect on sound is just mind blowing and more over helpful for people like me, who try to get some great sounds out of their rig they have at home.
    Have to say thanks to Mr. Roberts for uploading this brilliant breakdown!

    I’m actually really surprised at how little snare ended up in the room mics, maybe just unlucky. Snare room sample is always killer. Thanks for the video Mark, was a treat

    • @markrobertsproducerenginee945
      @markrobertsproducerenginee945  4 года назад +2

      Nice one! Yeah, goes that way a bit sometimes. There’s other ways to bring out the snare should you want to avoid the room sample, might do a vid on that.
      Wasn’t too bad to be honest, some of what you might hear is where I’ve dipped midrange to control the cymbals which might mask the snare a little... ?

    • @jobelewis6416
      @jobelewis6416 4 года назад +2

      Mark Roberts Producer/Engineer Yeah definitely, I’d love to see your approach to that, with you being an engineer who likes to bring out the room in the drums. I’d love to spend a day in middle farm just collecting room samples for my own mixes, I couldn’t live without using them in the smaller rooms I’ve recorded drums in

    Thank you so much for showing this, mark and rabea! I learned so many many many many things from all of your videos. I need to try things out on our own record. Especially the reverb ambient stuff is the most complicated for me to make things huge and not washy or a chaotic soup of sounds. I am very excited for the next videos. Keep up this glorious work!
    Thanks and greetings - Benny

  • @louiscoutellier120
    @louiscoutellier120 4 года назад +1

    thanks for the video , I love the way you manage to maintain the organic vibe of the band but make it polish and massively modern sounding !
    Did you use a top down approach with master plugin chain while mixing by the way ?

    • @markrobertsproducerenginee945
      @markrobertsproducerenginee945  4 года назад +1

      louis coutellier thanks very much!
      In answer to your question - “kinda”. I didn’t do a full top down thing, I more mixed “into” some compression, eq and tape emulation. That stuff would be there pretty early on.
      I do top down mixing on drums and other individual elements. The overall mix is more just “mixing into”

    I do have one question, though, about the recording site. I've noticed that Toska likes to record at Middle Farm Studios, which looks great. But as an audio engineer, Mark, wouldn't you also recommend that they make an album at Side Farm as well? JK. Stupid.
