140 are great cars... I owned a 1972, 142E which was the ''hot'' version of the 140 series... It had the B20E engine (high compression Bosch Jetronic fuel injected engine) coupled to the m41 manual short shifter 4 speed overdrive transmission, the grand luxe all leather interior and the british Smith''s gauges in the instrument panel... A beautifull car !!!
Way back in the 1972 I was able to buy a 142E from a small Volvo dealer in Ontario, Canada. We took the time to search Volvo parts numbers and found the Volvo factory rally springs were quite affordable. Best $200.00 I ever spent on options. Forget lowering, go up!
I drove a ‘72 142E from Tucson Az to Poughkeepsie NY in 1982, to attend culinary school. With a pregnant wife, morning sickness. My then-17 year old nephew then put an overdrive on it. In my driveway. In the dark. In the rain. And it worked. Loved that car.
@@DeanofMachines Ok, it was ‘81…. True story. First my oldest brother, and nephew, rebuilt the tranny. Later, nephew indeed found a machine shop to shorten the driveshaft, etc, and then installed the overdrive. Slick as snot. I later owned three other decrepit 140 series.
I am in the process of buying a mustard yellow 1971 Volvo 142 (crazy coincidence) right now as well and I am really excited to fix her up just as you have done!
Yeah on a car that old that's been sitting for years it's pretty much inevitable that you're going to have to replace all the rubber brake hoses. Same is true for the clutch line as well. I personally like the steel braided brake lines myself.
Welcome to my life Dean😂. I didn't plan on having to mostly restore a volvo, more like fix it up a bit and cruise. Unfortunately there is not a single part of my 164 that doesnt need major attention. At least there are still 240s around to pick from. I'd be dead in the water if not. We appreciate all you do to provide this excellent content ✌️
I'm getting flashbacks to my yellow '71 142S which at o ne point had 240-series turbo rims, also 5-spoke like those geminis. you're really making great progress with this one, and it looks so clean.
Hey Deano, I really dig the new member of the fleet. Also cool to here that this new influx of subscribers is 10 percent women, are they watching for the Volvo content or the hunky host of the show !😂
Great Dean! that was an easy 40 minute tinkering😬 with Mr mustard. With only a few smaller adjustments left you will be the new cruiser King with your peers. I had a -72 dark green back in the day with high front and low arse ( that was the rage back then ) Looked more like a gasser. Same brown interior and Wolfrace slot mags. Ahhhh.... the yesteryears.
Happy to see that someone is fixing up these old Volvos .... I have a bit of a project car myself I bought 7 years ago , sigh.... It's a 2000 S80 T6 . I really like the car but sometimes ... I wish I would've picked a different Volvo . I paid $750 for it 7 years ago it sat mostly for about 8 years before I bought it . All it needed at the time to get it moving was a fresh battery and gas it's been driving ever since but the dang thing has so many Gremlins in it and I also know it's not the most popular Volvo makes ... but it's mine and paid . Thank you for sharing these videos because if you can get these old Volvo cars running I can probably keep mine going too.
Growing up in the 70s, we had a Volvo 4-door sedan. I cannot remember whether we had a 144 or 244. The grill and headlights looked like this 144, however, the interior looked like a 244. It was the greatest car, until several of the engine mounts failed. Still miss that car!
Your wife has so much patience. Big life award to her. I love your passion, it's interesting to see you rebuilding these old cars that would otherwise not see the road again.
VP Autoparts has been great to deal with! This car has been fun to tinker with. I could’ve stretched it out into 4 videos but I wanted to get it caught up to recent content.
That steering box will always have some slack when turned to the side. If it has slack straight ahead it's an issue. Only adjust out the slack with it straight ahead.
Enjoyed it, though watching you kept me out of my garage and working on my Amazon. I got new front calipers from Classic Volvo Restoration, which I think is the same as VP Autoparts. They have problems too: holes for brake lines are drilled deeper than on original calipers, lines are loose even with fittings screwed in all the way. What's with these aftermarket parts? Arg!
That's a massive A/C compressor in the engine bay. It's probably less efficient compared to a modern compressor, and you might have a little more space around a modern one. I bet you've thought of this already.
That mustard coloured 142 is a nice looking body. The wheels, both the 5 spoke and the faux wires (I know you don't like them but they look good) look good. Did Volvo make a 162 ie 1 series, 6 cylinder, 2 door?
That's why i always remove bleeder screws on bench - put high temp grase and test everything before install... Just remove caliper, open it and tap bleeder from behind (i think it's possible like in 240's Girling front caipers)
That access hole is, I believe, for access to the bottom of the pickup. At least it was on mine. Do yourself a favour and tear the bottom disc off of the screen off of the pickup. It crushes with age and causes fuel starvation issues. A modern fuel filter up front will do more than it can anyhow.
I think the car wont be level if you drop it more in the front. If you notice the wheel arch is alot higher in the front. i bet u new this i just had to say it 🙂
