FAQs:
1. How to Reset your Thermal Switch.
Answer:
Step1:Watch the part of the video at 2m & 26 seconds. • (Read Descriptions for... , remove the two leads from the controller. Trace the wires to the thermal switch & follow step 2
Step 2:Reset the thermal switch or button on your water heater. If your water heater has a thermal reset switch, flip it. If your water heater has a thermal reset button, press & hold it for up to 4 seconds to reset your appliance. See this google images link to see typical places for the reset button, it is mostly on the thermal switch. Plastic piece which is not spring loaded. Thats how mine is.
2. Your video was going very well until it showed you trying to remove the valve. It shows you turning it to the right, then the left & then trying to pull it out & it not coming out. Then you insert a (Recap) in the video & it never shows how you managed to get it out. Can you please explain?
Answer:
I had to turn anti-clock wise (left turns) to completely unscrew the valve from the heater body. The reason why I happened to go right is I realized I had some water leaking & assuming the worst case that water somehow had filled back up into the tank. I did have a leak in my water valve which caused the tank to slowly fill back up. In the end, I drained it & continued with unscrewing (anti-clockwise) till the valve was out. In the beginning it felt like I was going to break it as the plastic body is flimsy. Use your desecration on amount of pressure to apply. If its too tight, left & right turns will help loosen it up. Hope that helps.
3. Hi I have a now 2 year old Kenmore water heater which is supposed to carry a 12 year warranty. My gas valve has gone out & has left me with no hot water for over a week.
Answer:
Sears tells me that this part isn't under warranty & wants 200.00 for the part. I seem to get a different answer from them each time, but it seems they imply that as a homeowner, you have to contact a sears qualified technician & pay their labor before they will provide the part under warranty. Did you have all these problems getting your part?
My situation was different. I had to contact the heater manufacturer as my home warranty of 1 year was up. However when I called the American Water Heaters warranty support, they performed troubleshooting over the phone & pretty soon we were on our way to replacement parts. Sears on the other h& seem to be violating consumer policies. Here is a link I found about one gentlemen trying to get parts. Good luck with it.

4.Wait, what happened at 3:07 & at 3:35 ? -- The most important parts of this video are not there, that is, the parts where the line gets connected back to the valve? WTF??
The FTW happened was my camera is faulty & had stopped recording. However , what I did was just unscrewed all the connections. They are all threaded. Now, the part where I am unscrewing the valve, I had to stop recording as I found some water ( few gallons ),which gushed out. So even though you did a water drain, make sure that it is completely drained. Oh yeah, the missing video would have been , me rotating the valve anti clock wise. That's it. I hope your tank gets back to work.
5. My pilot light comes on ,but after I release the button after holding it for a minute, the pilot gos out,I used my field piece digital meter & set it on millivolts dc & connected my leads to the two wires on the water heater thermocouple wires like you did & the volts went up to 440 in a minute,or a little before a minute & then my meter gets no more reading,it shows OL on my meter,my question is shouldn't I still have a millivolts reading on my meter even after a minute?
Answer:
OL could mean Over Limit, which means you still have voltage but your meter cannot read it. Do you have a higher setting or another meter?
I received the thermostat controller that i needed for my whirlpool gas water heater today. After turning off the gas and draining the tank i then used a shop vac with a small hose attached to reach into the tank and suck out all the calcium deposits or whatever all that white crap is. But after a good cleaning and replacing with the new thermostat controller. Hooking all the wires and gas line back up and checking for leaks. There were none. So i lit the pilot and low and behold the water tanks burner now lites like it is suppose to. I must give a shout out to the man i talked to from whirlpool on the phone. He listened and sent the new part that i knew i needed. free of charge. His name was Gary. And he spoke english. How about that ? But im good to go once again. There may be hope for whirlpool yet ? Thanks Gary for all your help. Tom.
Life saver, savior, rescuer, liberator, knight in shining armor, good Samaritan, all in one. Shukria man! The instructions don't mention you need to keep pressing that spark knob for a full one minute.
Thank you for your video. I, like you, watched many other videos, read instructions over and over, and kept attempting to re-ignite the pilot without any success. Your video was the ONLY ONE I saw suggesting to reset the water heater and how to do it. You kept me from having to call utility company or repair technician. I am so grateful for your help!
Just noticed I didn't have hot water and I came across your video. I was using single click on the igniter and it wasn't working but when I watched the video you used multiple clicks until the pilot came on so I appreciate your help.
THANK YOU! The first 1:42 seconds of this video saved me $75 from a visit from my plumber. Very much appreciated not just to save money but to give me the knowledge for the future.
Thanks on this video your stated to contact the manufacturer for replacement of the thermostat and that suggestion saved us $120. as it was under warranty and they replaced it free.
+David Sims Thank you and glad you liked the video and save you some bucks too. Please like and subscribe.
He really knows what he's talking about thank you very much my water heater is back on and running good
Thank you DeAndre, please Like and Subscribe to my channel for more detailed videos. Glad you have hot water.
hey man thanks. just saved me a huge amount of frustration. the fuse had popped on mine and I had 0 voltage. after setting the fuse I had to really keep pressing the ignition button for a while before the red light came on. thank you for this video.
Thank you STRAIGHT TO THE POINT. No flame, but the light blinks. still no hot water.
Thank you for helping me & my husband light our Rheem water heater
Thanks for the useful video! Do you know what the settings A, B & C are for? Thanks!
Generally speaking, A B C setting is for temperature, A is usually around 110, B is usually around 120-130 and C is usually 140 F.
Followed the steps of the professional and it worked like a charm. 👍 thank you
GUYS, TRY THIS!!! I laughed so hard after I read this on another thread and it worked for me after spending a couple hours trying all the different steps. Idk why, but this is the only thing that reset my heater and got it working!
1) Light the pilot and hold the button down 20 sec after the 4 lights come on.
2) Turn knob to very hot for 10 sec
3) Turn knob to hot for 10 sec
4) Turn knob to pilot for 10 sec
5) Turn knob back to hot and wait like 15 sec and it LIT! Lost my damn mind that this worked haha
Tell me if it works for you guys =)
Justin White mine as well it started right up
Thank goodness this video help me out big time today🙏🏼
This is the only video that has helped me. Thanks!
Thanks a lot , spend 2 hrs trying to turn it on and almost retuned it. Solved in 1 min . Thanks yooooouuuuu
I keep seeing the word's "state of the art" and this control was so easy to hack.@ least I didn't freeze to death. The old unit control's would not have allowed this.
Check It Out !!! I just got a house with this exact model water heater, watched videos on how to ignite it and got it working so I was happy I had hot water! I put it in between low and hot and it worked great it stayed blinking my next question would be do u leave it on like that or does it eventually turn on or what? I just messed with it last night so I’m just worried about leaving it on or having to turn it on. The white light stayed blinking and worked great. Thanks!
Very Helpful Video, Thank You ♡
You're welcome 😊
Thanks to you I fixed my pilot light!!!
I just got a new AO Smith water heater installed. It has been making quite a bit of noise. It sounds like either a tin lid flexing or someone taping the water heater with a wrench or something. I'm not sure if I should be concerned.
thank you so much for the video!! Your video totally solved my water heater problem. You are a life saver!!
Thank you! I finally got it turned on after no hot water for 3 days.
Maria, I am glad you found this video useful. Please subscribe and like the video.
Very helpful. I tested thermocouple using multimeter.
I have the same control valve on a Bradford White heater - it's broken. Thermocouple, temp sense, thermal switch, PCB, wires, connectors all check out. Cleaned the pilot and thermocouple. Pilot lights, but will not stay lit. The green status LED blinks either 1hz or 7 pulses and a pause. When I try to turn on the unit, while still holding the pilot button down - the pilot just gets small and goes out. Super bummed that this unit is only a few years old. It breaks on a Saturday afternoon and Monday is July 4th holiday. No one to fix it for 3 days at least.
i just got a service call to ts one of these tanks for a new customer who happens to be indian, now that i cleared that up.he says it's a code 7 so this video does not help my situation.anyway let me dissect your video here a bit.you were testing to see why the pilot doesn't stay lit.according to the legend there is a code for low thermopile voltage so you wouldn't need to test it for that since it would already tell you this.if it were a code flashing for it then the next step would be to take it out and clean it to be absolutely sure that end there is no problem with it being dirty.also there could be a problem with a dirty or maladjusted pilot ,the latter not as common because it's something that isn't replaced regularly and if someone made a mistake with tp height adjustment.i've manipulated older gas hw tanks with the burner assembly outside of the tank to see if the flame was hitting the thermoCOUPLE as it's called on those properly at the right angle and not lifting away from it.i'm not sure if i could do that on tanks of today which are the closed chamber type.pilot quality and position is key to make the pilot work correctly.correct me if i'm wrong but the gas valve is really called a gas control but in this case this is called an electronic wiper.you keep referring to it as being called a thermocouple in essence it really is called a thermopile.they are 2 distinct types.what the differences are i forgot but they aren't the same.when testing both types i believe they are to measured in dc millivolts i know for sure a thermocouple is tested dc,something you didn't mention in your video.we are not testing in ac here folks.many people will forget to mention what setting you are supposed to set it for.i hate that.i like step by step.set your dmm for dc milivolts, what scale, etc, etc.ok meticulous mike's affordable plumbing, heating, electrical and large kitchen appliance troubleshooting and repair, installs, maintenance serving the capital district for 15+ years signing off.thanks for the video.
Thank you this actually helped now I can stop freezing in the shower and actually shower in water that’s hot😭💙
We have replaced thermocouple and gas value but it still does not light. Plumber did not drain water; could that be the problem!
My knob gets stuck on pilot?? It sparks on then its jammed on pilot. I have to mess with it to bring it to off position. Do you know why??
Muchas gracias ya aprendí como prender el boiler sin necesidad de un plomero thank you
Just installed a new Whirlpool water heater.Could not get the pilot to light.Explained the problem to the tech and he said the valve was bad. They would not give me a RA number so I could return it to Lowes for a replacement.the best they would do is send me a new valve. There is something wrong when I have to fix a brand new water heater.
You need to replace your flame igniter.
one question, do you need a working thermostat to power on the gas heater? thank you in advance
How did you get the valve so fast after calling the manufacturer durring the video? That was fast.
where do the leads go? do you have to wire it into your breaker box or something?
Does anyone know what temperature the low setting is? The booklet does not acknowledge this setting anywhere.
VAC - 55°
High - 125°
A - 128°
B - 137°
C - 147°
VERY HOT - 160°
My old water heater cracked and leaked so we got a new one. After about 6yrs the thermostat failed. It was leaking from the thermostat itself. People thought I was crazy. Removed the old one and it had a plastic tip that had cracked/worn out? Got a new one and now it won't light. These thermostats are horrible. I'd prefer the thermostat of my Old water heater, because that never had any problems.
I'm having a problem with a slight smell of gas around the gas valve. It's been replaced, and the odor of gas is still noticeable. I believe the valve isn't quite tight enough as I see at least three exposed threads in back of the valve.
If I cannot find the same thermostat can I use a different kind?
Hmmmmmm I am still grappling here I'm half a dozen ideas into the thing and I think if there's a reset mechanism on this reliance M.N. 6-30-NOCT 400 gas water heater (okay if my face is looking directly at box with blinking light that ain't blinking no more ! FROM there WHERE exactly is "this reset" switch knob button where is it.
Also: nobody's mentioned this with regards to the base of the heater there's TWO screens "dust and or DOG HAIR filters" okay so it is. Now I found my screen's caked ! dust and my white husky HAIR thick thick SO cleaned that wrapped around tank filter and I noticed "barely noticed" a second roundish filter directly under and in the center of this TANK ALRIGHT
and direct above that smallish round filter sits the pilot light.
I just wrapped a piece of duster cloth to a FLY SWATTER and reamed it across the filter
and so I did.
STUPID THING STILL the pilot light DIES fast....! upon releasing the pilot knob held in a minute two minutes 3 minutes
👦just go's out I
👔 couldn't even
👖 get the knob
turned to
heat b 4 it
WENT OUT
reset button knob or
switch WHERE'D
IT BE

Thanks for posting this! Been showering with cold water for the past week. This video helped me fix the problem.
Superbly done! What is the model number of that thermostat?
This link has all the info on thermostat and the gas valve. living-in-usa.com/index.php/gas-water-heater-resources/
Thank you for that cuz your video help me a lot
I have a whirlpool water heater that has that exact temperature control unit on it. I installed the new one last night and I am still not able to get the pilot lit. I've done pretty much everything twice with no luck. The biggest problem I have is my health, I can get the parts covered under warrenty but putting them on once is not too bad, but when I have to keep messing with it my body starts cursing at me. I've followed the pilot lighting instructions to the letter with no luck. If you can think of anything that might help that would be greatly appreciated.
+eric tuck Did you check the Thermocouple ? That could be the next problem.
Thank you for the video, it was really helpful.
How long it take b4 water
To get hot a gain.
I just relight
Thanks
Question how long b4
Water hot again
My water tang about 25gallom
Thank you, my heater turned on!!!!!
would be so much easier to hear without background music
I think i've told thousands of reviewers this same statement, pay attention to the audio levels of your tracks, else it makes your video bad.
Van Truong worwew
I keep getting 5 blinks sensor failure number 5 is that something that can be replaced doing it myself
thank you save my life i did not know how to turn it on
You are welcome. Glad it worked out.
good video,my pilot light comes on ,but after I release the button after holding it for a minute, the pilot gos out,i used my field piece digital meter and set it on millivolts dc and connected my leads to the two wires on the water heater thermocouple wires like you did and the volts went up to 440 in a minute,or a little before a minute and then my meter gets no more reading,it shows OL on my meter,my question is shouldn't I still have a millivolts reading on my meter even after a minute.
OL could mean Over Limit, which means you still have voltage but your multimeter cannot read it. Do you have a higher setting or another Meter?
CTRL Z TV thanks for the info,i found out that after a minute the electrical current from the censer goes out.thats why it shows ol after a minute.i found out it was my gas valve,i replaced the gas valve and it works perfect, thanks for the help.
TY sooooo much for this video....I have a new hot water heater with this controller on it and the instructions on lighting the pilot light were not clear...I couldn't figure out why when I was pushing the ignighter button and holding the switch it would not show a flame...well duh..after that you turn it on...the instructions did NOT say that....thanks to you I will have a hot shower tonight!!!
You are most welcome. Glad you have hot water :)
Please subscribe.
Thank you! Video is very informative
muchas gracias,good video
Muchas gracias por tu ayuda👍
Hi my water heater is leaking from the nut on top of the water heater
You were very helpful! Thanks
This video helped big time.
Wow It worked, Thank You.
You're welcome!
Sir, it is a thermopile, not a thermocouple. Thermocouples put out 10 to 30 millivolt. Thermopiles put out 350 - 900 millivolt.
mine is blinking 4 times what does that mean I know it said over heat shutdown or something like that
Gracias, I appreciate it! God bless you!
Thanks for the video. Like others have said, please drop the music it is making the video frustrating to watch.
You really helped me. Thank you very much 🙏
Thank you for the video!
Thanks for the video! :)
You are most welcome. please subscribe for more videos. Thank you.
Push knob for a minute...you only have to push lower starter button a few times, not for a minute. This sends spark to ignite gas. You should hear it lite.
Nice video!
Thank you for the video
Thank you. Subscribed!
Honeywell should sell the control panel or even just the controller board separately as that is often the problem, not the valve body itself.
How do you replace the thermo coupler on this unit?
please check out the instruction manual here. living-in-usa.com/index.php/2013/12/17/volume-1-introduction-to-the-problem-and-troubleshooting-gas-water-heater/ let me know if you have any other questions.
+Buuboi214 There isn't one, its a thermopile on this model not a thermocouple.
oillio h
Very helpful.
thank you.
You are welcome.
Yes, I did it , thank you
I need help. I cant get my pilots to even turn on, they wont light. I tried calling honeywell tech support but i was on hold for over an hour with never getting to talk to support
Jpgee, I advise you keep calling the manufacturer to get troubleshooting steps and a replacement if determined that a part has failed. You should be able to follow the basic troubleshooting as mentioned in the video and provide the result to the tech support. let me know if you have more questions.
Scared to try it myself?
Thank you finally got our pilot to lit up... I soo didn't want to take a cold shower during the winter
Get a kik
And add me
You are most welcome. Please subscribe.
You need the depress the pilot button after it lights until it blinks green. You dont turn it up until its green
What is the “VAC” position for?
Time Zone vacation
got 5 blinks sensor bad how and where is it
Thank you it did work
Omg your a freaking life saver!!!
technically, its a thermopile if it has the 2 wires coming out of it and its a thermocouple id it has the single copper line..
I love this dude
I cross the wires It came on for me
+CTRL Z TV.....my pilot light just went out yesterday.I hit the reset button and lit the pilot light, came on for 10min and shut off....but every since yesterday, after igniting the pilot light all I see is gas flames while burning. Then it shuts off after 5min. HELP lol!!!!!
+Southeast Wink 202 sound like the thermocouple is not sending the fire. Did you troubleshoot the thermocouple?
CTRL Z TV thanks for replying but I come to find out the thermocouple had build up residue on it to give it a low ⚡. But I got it fixed sir, thanks again.
It wasnt a bad flame sensor? Thats ususlly an issue
How do you turn it off?
I reset the thermocouple switch it came on (status light)
Thanks you very helpful
thank you... thank you... thank you!!!
Where is the battery at in that?
+Zane Wv there is not battery in these valves. The power comes from the thermocouple.
CTRL Z TV how does that work?
BE CAREFUL..i heard if you turn these to the highest temp for to long...the control will lock out and cant be reset. you have to buy another one...its a built in safety feature.
thank you
My light doesn't blink or come on at all
Ya they sent you the part 2 years later not two days
Thank you !
Thanks
cant you come home of the houses
Cool Thank You
