  • WARNING:
DO NOT SET VALVE TO A, B, C, or VERY HOT!
Honeywell Valve has detected a“water too hot” event, the gas valve will never work again - unless you know how to reset "it", the HONEYWELL FRANKENVALVE! Here is the simple fix. I opened the cover again, left everything plugged in, took a piece of speaker wire with the plastic off of the ends, and held the wire ends to the top left pin and the top-right pin for a few seconds. I saw that the light went out and the pilot had gone out. I closed the cover again and lit the pilot again. Now the light changed from flashing 4 times to flashing 7 times. This time I left the knob in the pilot position for 10 minutes. When I came back to check the water heater, I saw that the light was flashing normally. I turned the knob to just the Hot setting and it fired up! MY CHOICE / NOW, WHAT'S YOURS? Please Subscribe, Like, and Share my Videos.

Thank you so much for this video! I didn't have to short circuit the board, but I did leave it unplugged overnight. It fired up the next morning. Our Whirlpool tank isn't even 3 years old. Honeywell should be ashamed. Again, thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge!!!

Pilot light went out one evening. Tried to relight and could never get the status light to start blinking after getting the pilot light to light. Finally tried the reset button and lit the pilot and the status light came on like it was supposed to! Thank you, you saved my family's shower time tonight!

Dude, you rock!! Thanks for the awesome post. My Status light was off, did what RC said and it worked. When I was hitting the igniter i could not see the pilot come on but it did because my status light started blinking. I then turned the knob to hot and I was back in business. Made my day brother. Good karma coming your way.

Thank you. Saved me $1,000 as the repair man wanted to just install a new one. Manufacturer gave me a choice of paying $30 for overnight shipping (for my free replacement part), $20 for second-day air and $10 for ground. Got it in two day with ground anyway. Followed the instructions in your link to simply swap out the front electrical panel and not touch the guts--and while it took 60 seconds and 30 presses--eventually fired right up. Manufacturer said it could take 90 seconds and 90 presses, so don't give up in the first 10 seconds if you try this as it might take time.

You, my good sir, are a God send. As a first time home owner, discovering my hot water heater on the fritz terrified me. However, with your amazing knowledge and calm problem solving I just trumped my first test of adulthood. I never believed that I would feel this level of wonder at feeling hot water coming out of the tap. You, you amazing human being, deserve only the best parts of life.

The overheating reset switch is what fixed it. It's working now. None of the videos, manuals, tutorials, etc. I've researched have said anything about that reset switch. I doesn't even look like a switch on my Bradford White. Thank you very much. This is a great video and saved me money I couldn't afford to spend.

Thank you for the tips. We woke up this morning with no H/W and came down to learn that the Honeywell valve was unresponsive (no lights, couldn't light pilot). After opening it up and shorting the circuit board, it fired right up. I did not even remove the wiring harness from the circuit board before shorting around the board. That did the reset. Thanks for the help.

Even thought this video is now 6 years old it seems the Honeywell vavles continue having the same issue. New tank installed (A.O. Smith) in a remodel this year. A friend spent $700 with two different pluming companies who replaced the thermo-couple, then the vavle, and burner assembly before I came across this video. I figured if all the electrical/mechanical components had been replaced (besides the tank), and the venting was good there must be something else going on. I set to hot instead of A or B as the plumbers had done and it's worked without issues for 2 days. I didn't need to reset the valve. I turned the gas off, turned the valve to the off position for 30 minutes, and then restart the pilot. Thank you!

This was extremely helpful! Thank you. My status light was not blinking at all. I switched to the off position and let it sit for 5 min as instructions said on the tank. Turned the knob to pilot and pressed and held in the control knob for 40 seconds. At 40 seconds, I continually hit the ignitor button while still keeping the control knob pressed in. I pressed the ignitor button prolly 10 times or so and the status light started blinking. I checked in the window and saw the pilot was lit and then turned the knob to the hot setting. All is good now.

Thanks for the tip about not turning it up too high. I've had both the 4-flash and 7-flash fail codes. Each time I had it turned up pretty far. I just re-lit it as set it between low and hot. We'll see what happens. The fail code is apparently cleared when you turn the knob all the way to "off" and leave it there for about a minute. Then, when you relight it, it will give you the normal blue status light.

Thanks for the video. Reset button on the therm sensor did it for me. Valve seems ok. Just a note, the plumber told us previously that the water temp needs to be 120-140 for the dishwasher to work properly or your dishes don't dry correctly so we had ours set on A-B to get that temp. We have an A.O. Smith 40 gal. with the honeywell valve and has been in service for 8 years without any problems till now. Thanks again.

It's really sad to know that I spent $500.00 for a new hot water heater with a 6 year warranty, just to find out that if you don't pay a professional to install it as well, you really don't have a warranty at all. So many lawyers it must have taken to make up this warranty package on this new age hot water heater. As I read from one other guy on here, my light stopped blinking on of all days Christmas, 10 degrees out side. I thought man I don't have the money to spend on a tech to come out here. So for my $47.50 a month I pay for computer service I jump on utube come to Rc Jr post on good old Whirlpool and good old Honeywell and pushed the reset button and Bada Boom the hot water tank in back in business! So glad for guys like him to help us keep alittle of our hard earned money in "Our" pockets! Thanks to all you guys that do these videos. Merry Christmas! and now it is! J Groom

Happy New Year. Just wanted to say Thank You. Was able to follow the steps in the link you posted. I didn't have to short out the board. All we did was detach the face and unplug the wiring you detailed. Waited about 10 minutes to allow the board to reset or reboot like a cable box. Reattached the wires and the facing and tried to light the pilot. Low and behold it turned back on. So don't put your boiler ever that HOT (A, B, C etc). Thank you once again We highly appreciate the info. Have a Blessed and Prosperous 2017. From my Family to Yours - Sincerely - Carmelo

Thanks for the tip on the thermostat setting to keep this from throwing error codes.
I installed our Rheem water heater from Home Depot with one of these Honeywell pieces of junk about two years ago. (Sorry, but I felt the need to list all the guilty parties.) It's gone out a few times, after which I've found it with 7 code or nothing (no light blinking at all). I've been lucky enough to get it restarted just by going through the pilot ignition procedure. Sometimes the pilot lights while the 7 code is still flashing (!), but I just turn the knob and it fires up. A short time later, the light reverts to the normal 1 flash/3 seconds.
With a 30 gal tank and a family of four, we've had problems with running out of hot water in the past, so I've been keeping the knob set to "A." We use less of the hot water that way; two or three of us can take showers right after one another without running out of hot water. I guess we're going to have to live with slightly less hot water for awhile, because I'm going to take your advice and turn the knob down to the low side of "Hot" and see how that works out.

Thanks! We have new construction...just had a problem last night with no hot water. Turned off this morning and tried to re-light the pilot with no luck. Will follow your video to restart. :-)

Remember if the switch on the bottom was indeed tripped, you will need to clean the flame trap under the water heater. The only 2 things that cause the TCO to trip is air supply or venting. Most likely theres dust stopping the air from getting to the combustion chamber. No matter how clean the area is, theres always dust.

Great video, thanks. If The pilot does not stay lit and the status light does not blink- try the reset button first. I also cleaned the thermocouple and noticed the igniter put out a better spark

Thank you for this video! You're the best! Totally worked, I have hot water again! :) Honeywell sucks for continuing to distribute a crap product! Sadly, I can't say that I am surprised.

'...Honeywell sucks for continuing to distribute a crap product...'
Same problem with my Bradford White water tank and the Honeywell pilot system.
Constantly fails / goes out when the temp is higher.
(The water heater is fine and a quality product btw)
You have to wonder what their product testing does before they go live with production.

Thanks for this video. I was able to restart the pilot on my hot water heater during this pandemic. So you saved me from having a stranger in the house, and got the ot water working again for a family of 4!

Thank you for information on how to reset the unit
Other folks should clean thermopile and then reset it, even if it takes 10 or more try’s
