THANK YOU FOR SAVING US A TON OF MONEY. Your explanation of how to light pilot was very easy to understand. My retired Navy technician said, " even an old dog can learn new tricks."
Thermopile and thermocouple are 2 different devices. The thermocouple senses the pilot light being on. The thermopile provides the power to the circuit board inside the valve control unit. The red and white wires go to the thermopile and the thermal saftety switch on the side of the burner assembly.
they do the same thing...a thermopile is a bunch of thermocouples "stacked" and generates more millivolts. They both have the same function though: to prove the pilot is iit and close the gas valve if it is not.
@@TRUE_GR1T Yet, they are not the same thing. Similar to how copper is not brass. And, no, they don't "do the same thing," as you put it. As you, yourself stated, a thermopile "generates more"...more than something that it is not... a thermocouple.
You have rescued me at 9pm on a Friday night when my HWH had a pilot but no burner ignition. I had no idea you could clean a thermopile. Considering there is no direct match for a new thermopile, I’m guessing I would need to choose something that looks as close as original when entering the original part number. Thanks again for your channel.
This water heater does not use a Thermocouple. It couldn't produce enough voltage to run that water heater. This water heater uses a thermopile and it's not that easy for most people to replace. But almost no water heaters use a thermocouple since around 2014, In quite a few water heaters didn't use them or even years before that.
Great video. My water heater got flooded and I'm was trying to cover all angles with getting it back on. You answered my question on the power issue...thanks.
Typical of the age we live in. Over-engineer everything, from appliances to vehicles. How many of these thermostats were replaced say 20 or 30 years ago? My guess not to many.
I have a fast hot water heater and it keeps going out so I reset it and it will come back on for a little while so I cleaned it with a brush. How can I find out if it has a thermal coupler thank you!!!
I owned a CRAFTMAN natural gas water heater for 20 years before I had to replace it ...... it was made in March 2002 and when out in September 2022 ......
The Mars 2012 and 2020 rovers work the same way, it's a thermocouple and the heat is from nuclear decay. It's the can looking thing sticking at an up angle out the back of the rover. They're called radioisotope thermoelectric generators.
I have a question about the two wires that attach to the gizmo on either side of the button you pressed. My plumber told me to un-attach the wires and short them with a paper clip. Do you think this is a good idea. My mother in law had the same issue. He did it to her tank and the pilot light hasn't gone out in months seemingly fix the issue. What do you idea?
what about if the water heater is been out for long time is still able to produce power ,, mine went out las dicember and i tried to lit but it wont but when i tired i see a little of spark so i dont knoe if that spark is enough to lit the pilot or no
Hey brother quick question. I pulled out the water heater burner to clean the possible dust off of it and it had some greenish hard water corrosion on the screen that I can possibly wash off with some soap and water or even CLR. Question is can I use soap and water or even CLR to clean it?
The light is blinking in 4 and pause which tells me that it's high temperature shutdown. The pilot is on but very low. Should I call a professional bc the water is still Luke warm
I think the piece in your hand is not for this model. The line in the heather is to send gas to the pilot. The thermo.... Piece is the one with the two wires on the right of the valve.
Hi, thank you for the informative video. Speaking of the lights you mentioned at the end of this video. I have the exact same gas valve and I am handy, so I tinkered and was able to reset it to get the pilot light to stay on. However, when I turn up the temp waiting for it to kick over and ignite the big flame, it never does. My status lights is a strobe flash (not a solid flash), every 3 seconds, which indicates that it is signaling for heat, but nothing. What are your thoughts?
It could be a few things, however it sounds to me like the thermal couple needs to be cleaned or replaced... I have several videos on this style water heater. There’s also one on how to clean the intake air filter/grate. Make sure your cleaning that on a regular basis. It’s really easy, check out the video show you how. If that doesn’t work I would do after the thermocouple.
I’ll try to send you a link as well however your best bet is to subscribe to my channel, go to my playlists and you’ll see one for water heater issues.
Hey I really appreciate everything u teach am learning a lot for sure but see I suffer from Anxiety and I will like to ask if u can pls do less talk and go right to the job no disrespect but really bothers me and I want to keep following you . Every video is great. N thank you again.
My pilot went out, when I went to clean the vents underneath there is moisture. Does that mean there is an enternal leak. It's not gushing out water. I've turned off gas to water heater. Water valve into heater is Open and it is not leaking.
Do you happen to know the model number of that Honeywell?? My dad has the same and in 6 years time they have had to a service person come out 3 times now. The controller has been the issue… not the thermocouple…. What a lousy controller
Hi there. You have been so helpful thank you. Can you share the link on fixing the thermal coupler? I'm sorta handy and could use some schooling so I can fix it. Thanks for your time
Bobbi Dudley ruclips.net/video/WLmqM5PDHes/видео.html I’m not sure exactly which water heater you have but this one is a pretty decent video. I would recommend watching several videos do a search for “replacing thermal couple”

Thanks so much. I've always wondered how that box was getting electrical power. You're the first to concisely answer the specific question.

This is a great video. I am embarrassed to admit I was looking around for an outlet and was left with a “what the hell” moment!

Thermocouple senses heat. Does not produce power or any electric. I've known that since I was very young

It's a luxury to have instant hot or warm water on my second floor bathroom.
This is what I woke up @ 4 am wondering. Thanks

Yay, water heater is on again! Thank you😁
Thanks man that help a lot I just clean the thermocouple my water works now. I’m going to buy a new when it goes bad again. Thanks for the help

It's a Thermopile
Thermopile
Thermopile!

Dude the blinking on the gas valve of the light blinking tell you what’s wrong with your water heater by counting blinking light diagram 👍🏼
So what happens if the unit is off. Where does the initial electricity to make the spark come from if it is not lit.
piezoelectric crystal in the igniter
The tco needs reset or the flame trap needs cleaned
Wish you would have shown how to replace it because we have the exact unit
So if your pilot light goes out, and heat is not present how do you then re light your pilot light?
My pilot will light when held down...evan after 90 secs when i let go it turns off??? Please help me
Same thing with mine

That is a thermocouple.
Those use thermopile. More voltage.
Yep. I learned that the hard way. The universal thermocouples at the big box stores will not work on that Honeywell unit.
what if the boiler is not hot water reamaining how the Termocouple will start?
Thank you
You’re welcome, thank you for the kind comment 👍
Thank you. This is very helpful
Thank you great info
Thanks
No problem
I just converted from electric to natural gas and the light on the water heater had me confused. Thanks!
Holy shit, ive spent hours trying to figure this out before I buy one...
It takes 350mv DC to power the unit from a thermopile
thanks! i didn't need 8 minutes of video
The light is blinking in 4 and pause which tells me that it's high temperature shutdown. The pilot is on but very low. Should I call a professional bc the water is still Luke warm

Correct. I was just using that as an example of what a thermal couple/thermal pile is.
he actually said this in the video...
Learned alot!! Thanks!!
Thks...good info!
If pilot is off and there is no heat, how does any electricity get generated to begin with?
when the pilot is off, another device generate electricity for the igniter .this device create an electric current when it is bend.
Why isn’t my pilot light turning on ? I’ve pressed it numerous times idk what’s wrong
Very helpful. Thank you!
I need to change the pilot where the video for that
What if you water heater is leaking water on top can yhat turn off the heater and is that dangerous
Thanks!
You bet!
Well Done.
We had power outages & no water for a couple days. Can this be the issue with the Thermopile Voltage Low issue?
Probably dirty
@@williamkeith8944 I think it was empty. It's working fine now
Excellent video, very clear and saved me time.
I sure wish I choose a different water heater that my local hardware store installed!
They all are very similar
If the pilot light is not lit how is that device going to get heat to generate power to light the pilot light ???
So how much would it cost to have that replaced shouldn't be over $100 if you supply the parts
It worked!😁😁😁😁Thanks

No battery, watch again.
6 months then you have to replace the battery and alternator.

Newer water heaters have NO PILOT. What generates the spark to fire it up?
Those need power, most gas water heaters except tankless have pilots.
they do too have pilots and a piezo switch lights the pilot.

Most use a 24" STD thermocouple
You take way tooo long to get to the point
26 seconds: The "battery" question was answered around the 26 second mark.
