Nick, that’s the best description on how to fit a catch-can, so far. I’ve had a HPD fitted by a mechanic years ago and I wasn’t quite sure if the hoses were on the correct way. After watching your video I was relieved to see they are correct, thank you. Cheers.

Thanks benny that was very insightful knowledge. I love nicks vids as I like to do this stuff to my truck all the time. Anything that enhances the vehicle and its performance is a plus for me. Nick breaks it all down as a mechanic himself, soo like minded people can do these little modifications themselves. Great work keep it up.
Nick. I received my Provent - 25 and have finally fitted it.Well although the Dmax 2015 & 2017 look similar under the bonnet heres what is the difference Pre & Post DPF. They have changed contour of one brake line from ABS controller. The air cleaners look similar but are different. The air intake to the Turbo is slightly different and the PCV inlet is in a slightly different spot to the turbo from the air box. The Maf sensor wiring to the air box runs differently. Catch can is now fitted and looks good and works fine and can change my fuel filter easily although be warned it is a tight fit..Heres what I modified to fit.A brake line I had to gently bend towards the firewall slightly. Cut of a small plastic lug on the air box which held a clip for MAF wiring ( No biggy) to fit the bracket and can in place.A small adjustment to the bracket when in place for clearance for the can.The hose from the breather to the top of the can fits OK. The cans bottom hose to the turbo inlet pipe I used the old PCV hose ( Left it on the turbo inlet) and a piece of 5/8 copper tube to join it to the new bottom hose from the catch can. Make sure the catch can and bracket dont touch or rub on the brake reservoir. I must admit for a while I thought I had bitten off more than I could chew and had blown$320.. But I am happy with the end result. By the way Nick where you looped the drain hose back with a cable tie and cut it to emptyI I was able to run mine on and the tap now sits just below my RH fog light inside the bumper and I just reach inside the bumper and pull it out and it s protected as well..Cheers
Have ran a Provent 200 on my 3.0L BT50 for 6 years now. They are a solid unit and compared to alot of the others out there they do a really good job of catching that oil mist. So you definitely won't be disappointed with your choice. Recently got the wife a MUX and was going to put a Provent on it also as the one on the ute has worked flawlessly. Then found that Isuzu do a genuine catch can for there NPR series trucks so grabbed one of them instead to compare. Really well built and only $115 for the unit and $15 for replacement filters as opposed to the provents $80 filter. Really keen to see how they compare side by side.
Great work & explanation with that video Nick, Its a nice install & piece of kit by the look of it. I did notice that the loop on the drain hose would not fill all the way as the accumulated oil would air-lock if you know what I mean. Not a big deal just pointing it out. I will work on getting one for my Penguin (105 Series) Land-cruiser. I like the way you present Nick & for a layman mechanic like me who wants to learn to do the work on my car, i really appreciate the efforts you go to to make it simple to follow. Watching you videos gives me the confidence to do the jobs myself, save money & know that it has been done correctly. CASE IN POINT - I’m not great with electrical stuff & went to an auto electrician last week who did not resolve my dash-lights issue, got the Penguin back home only to find that the plastics had been poorly aligned around the steering column & if that was not bad enough, they forced a self-tapping screw into where a machine threaded screw should go when they reassembled the dash & column.
Thanks Leigh! Thats frustrating about the auto electrician, it is hard to find good tradesmen. The Ball valve on the drain tube is not a perfect seal so i was thinking it will let enough air out to allow the oil to fill. Either way I always monitor my vehicle regularly and I can open the valve to let the air out and the oil drain down further if necessary. I'll just have to see how it goes. 😊👍 thanks for the comment 😊
Oops, not so quick. Western Filters released a new version yesterday, actually for Colorado 2017+ models instead of 2012+, with the catch can on the RHS, getting rid of those long hoses that go all the way around the engine. I've bought the new kit without the catch can, so now $100 worse off(!), not so much of a bargain. Such is life...
Thanks for the video I just got my 2018 mux Last Friday and your videos so interesting thanks for the information I only have 30,000 km on mine and I think I will put a catch can on it. Thanks for the great videos keep up with the content.
I have an aluminum one fitted. It requires to undo the bottom can to drain the oil. Not much room to move around. This Western Filters is so easy to drain. Will change to this brand. Thanks Nic for your recommendation.
Nick I have a 2015 Dmax from new and have decided to fit a Provent 200 catchcan and the one for my pre DPF D Max is a Prov-26 where as yours with the DPF is the Prov-25 which mounts near the air filter out of the way of the factory fuel filter. I phoned Western Filters and asked the question if I could fit the Prov 25 and they werent sure but after watching your video and comparing the underbonnet factory bolt holes ( Mine are vacant) I am sure I can fit your Prov -25 kit which doesnt clutter up the fuel filter area. So thanks for your help. I will let you and the others how I get on when I have fitted it.
Thanks for the vid. Helped me to get on to do my own install. Only I have the 2016 DMAX with an existing secondary fuel filter, which meant a installation on the passenger side of the engine bay (using the western filters kit). Ended up being a pig of a job replacing fuel hoses and switching orientation of the fuel filter, but I got it done (the catch can part of the install was a piece of cake) and just got back from a trip where it all held together. Your other vids on installs have been really good to watch and helped get a feel of the vehicle.
Hi nick. This is shiva from India 🇮🇳. Have been seeing ur videos from 2 years. They r really good. Bought an mux in 2019. Most of the mods u do are illegal in my country. Bull bar is not even possible here. Can’t upgrade the lights as well. But I still have done few mods like u. I got the hike it and it’s awesome. Thanks for that. Installed a pair of light force xgts as well which r still illegal. After an year of research and struggling, I managed to get the provent 200 4 catch can. But couldn’t get the hoses or the installation bracket. If u can provide me the specifications of the bracket, it would be helpful. I’ll fabricate the bracket myself. Thanks man. Tc

Agree with other comments ! Great video & has prompted me to seriously consider this install. There's a lot of suggestions that these are a good idea, and seeing the ease of install & quality of kit has got me very keen to do this. I've got 16000km on my MU-X so good timing I think 👍
It's a good idea for engine longevity and for keeping the intake nice and clean. My mu-x has about 26,000km on it now and there was a minor oily film in the hoses so at 16,000km your intake should be quite clean and the catch can will definately help keep it that way 😊
@@LowRangeNick i have a 2013 D MAX with 108K (no catch can) on it and how can i check if theres any build up on the D MAX now? As my D MAX doesnt have a DPF would i have tp drill the 2 holes for the bracket or are the holes there already as i havnt really taken any notice before?
Awesome video. I just came across this one and thought I would look at it since I'm looking at buying a MU-X. Well explained, even for me that has no mechanical knowledge I could follow your video. Thanks
I enjoy your videos very much as a hands on person! Clear and concise! Thanks to your vid I've purchased this kit and also the hikeit controller. By the way, would love it if you could show us how to do an EGR mod for the Mu-X :)
Thanks alot 😊 The best way to turn the EGR off is to go to a reputable tuner and have them turn it off in the ECU. This keeps the valve shut all of the time. 😊👍
Hey mate, just check your DPF hoses going to the pressure sensor aren’t rubbing against the hard brake line running down the inner guard, I fitted mine yesterday and found mine were touching it so I split some small lawn mower fuel hose and cable tied it to the hard line to prevent it from chaffing.
I was advised by my ISUZU dealer if theres any problems with engine in the future whilst under warranty and catch can fitted Isuzu may decline warranty claims .Was also told that if catch cans were nearness then Isuzu and other manufactures would be fitting them in the build
@@LowRangeNick thanks! I've just clocked over 25000km, similar to when you did yours.... And there was just a slight film of oil inside the orange hose.... Glad it's in now. 👌
Good one mate. I've been procrastinating for months but your vid has inspired me to get on with it 👍. Did you have much gunk in the intercooler intake hose?
Cheers monkee! There was a slight oily coating in the hoses but thankfully it hasn't had time to build up and cause any issues. I think it's a good time to start thinking about fitting a catch can sometime before 40,000km. My mu-x has done 26,000km now and there is no build up yet, just a light oily coating. 😊🛠
Thanks nick for the demo , just one thing mate , I have installed the exact same provent 200 to my mux , your kit had a pressure relief valve in top cap , my kit that I have just received from western filters November 20 has no valve at all .
Hey Nick, lots of people saying the ProVent 200 is the way to go and Made in Germany pretty much seals the deal. However I also heard good things about the HPD catch can for the MUX. Have you seen any of those in action and how much oil they catch in comparison to the ProVent? Like you said, they sure do look fancy!! Cheers
I wouldn't go HPD they don't catch much oil at all, they only have a metal gauze filter in them. I have drained countless HPD, Process West and proven catch cans on all different makes and models. I can say that you will remove the most oil from the crank case ventilation system with the provent 😊
@@LowRangeNick Legend! That is some good info right there. Very much in line with what I have been hearing from most people. Will definitely go with that one then. Cheers Nick, keep up the vids. Not many people making any on the MUX.
@@LowRangeNick Hey Nick, have ordered a ProVent from Western Filters. Should be here tomorrow. Hope they hooked you up with a mad deal, I bet you they would have sold a few because of you. Cheers
As Nick said, still very necessary. Not having a DPF has no impact with the EGR/PCV system. The engine will still be producing blow by and that is getting dumped into your turbo, intercooler and intake manifold. I have a WJ Jeep, 2.7 CRD with no DPF and rebuilt the engine 16k km ago. Fitting a catch can was one of the first things I did.
Top video Nick as always. I've heard differing opinions as to the importance of these, and one lingering question is if these were detrimental to engine reliability and longevity, why don't vehicle manufacturers fit one as standard? Thanks
I think the reason they don't fit them from factory is due to cost saving and the fact that its not necessary for the engine to operate. Also, it is unlikely to see issues with the intake blocking and causing issues within the warranty period so they have no reason to spend the extra money on it. Catch cans are fitted to trucks from factory. The isuzu trucks also run them from factory. A catch can is not a necessary thing, but if you plan on keeping your vehicle for a long time and want to look after the intake system it will definately reduce the need for costly repairs down the track. ie blocked intake from carbon build up, split intercooler hoses from being oil soaked and blocked/inefficient intercooler. 😊
Thanks for the video bro It's really clear. I have a dmax that has just got it's service and it's has ran for a month now , the oil level is now below the minimum point. The intercooler is full of oil coming from the breathing hose through the turbo. What can be done before installing the catch can?
Just bought my Provent system and the bracket and pipes are completely different to what Nick has here. Strange, im not mechanically smart so Ive got my hands full now haha.
Probably try a couple of cans of threebond diesel intake cleaner through the intake system to get rid of anything that may be present. After 60k it shouldn't be too bad.
Hey Nick thanks for your videos, I will be using a few of them for my own installs. I want to install a pre filter fuel kit to my Mu-X and already have a dual battery system installed in that area. Do you know of what the better products on the market are and the best way to install. Cheers mate
It's normal for the engine to use a little bit of oil while running in. Fitting a catch can wont void your vehicle warranty. The only way it will cause an issue is if the catch can is the direct cause of a fault or issue. Then the dealership may try and blame the catch can and not cover that under warranty.
Cheers for the video Nick. Have been following you for a month now since we brought our Mux. I find the videos very informative and keen to do some of your installs. Are there any warranty issues with Isuzu with the catch can and throttle controller as we have a 2019 model. Keep up the good work, cheers mate
Thanks alot Ben! There would only be an issue if the throttle controller or catch can was the direct cause of a component failure or fault. Otherwise no issues. You can quite easily remove the throttle controller and even the catch can if you are unsure if they will try and blame an issue on them.
Hi Nick Great videos by the way! Just wondering your unit comes with auto headlight. Im just it can be installed but dont know where to purchase here locally.
Hey nick I recently installed a catch can on my 2015 dmax and since installing I’ve noticed a ‘thump’ noise when I start it up. Any ideas? I thought maybe added pressure from catch can causing throttle valve to open more aggressively? Car runs fine once started but thump noise every time I start car. Thanks let me know what you think!
@@CRN8091 The munji egr delete cable tampers with an important ecu input. The intake air temperature/airflow meter. This input to the ecu is very important for it to be able to calculate the temperature and how dense the air is to be able to manage the correct amount fuel to be injected at any time. The munji cable falcifies this temperature reading telling the ecu that it is -2 degrees ALL The time. In turn keeping the egr valve closed because the ecu thinks that it is very cold outside and it needs to warm up the engine quicker, this also causes the ecu to inject more fuel then necessary because it is constantly thinking that it is -2 degrees. The other fact is that they also say on the newer models that they are unsure if it even closes the valve correctly as they havnt performed the correct tests. I have no confidence in a cable that is falcifying an important live data signal to the ecu and that also hasnt even been proved or tested correctly. I have my egr valve turned off in the ecu, it is 100% closed all of the time. I can see using the scan tool that it is closed and it is not effecting an important sensor signal to my ecu. So i am confident that I am never going to have any issues. 😊 hope that makes sense 👍🛠
LowRangeNick I’ve read mixed reviews on them, I have one and my eds scanner says the intake air temp is 2degrees when it’s plugged in.I also read you have higher exhaust gas temps when using them.i notice my engine coolant temp goes up 2degrees when it’s plugged in also.Think I will unplug it!. Thanks for the reply as always.
Great video Nick. I have ordered a 2021 Dmax X Terrain with the 3.0 engine, is your engine the exact same as mine? Just want to make sure t sits in the same spot. I should be able to work it out anyway. I bought the kit from Western Filters too. Well made bracket.
The provent and the Ryco units are very very similar. I’ve noticed that the inlet and outlet are both are opposite despite the near same design (inlet is bottom on ryco and top of provent) Wonder which is more effective.
Hey just a question i got . I have a 2010 dmax 3l turbo deisel dual cab is there anyway i could change the location of the fuel filter from the passenger to under the bonnet and where its located it keeps bumping the wire connector undernearth it . Any help in this situation would be awesome its in a stupid spot .
Is it a factory fuel filter or a secondary filter? In both cases you could move it if needed but you would have to make up a custom mounting bracket/lines etc. Can you space the bracket up a bit with some washers to stop it hitting on the wiring?
@@LowRangeNick no secondary filter just the factory one look up 2011 fuel filter change for isuzu dmax and you will see what i mean who ever designed the location for this is a wanker hey .
Great video Nick, I’m having trouble removing the original DPD bracket. What sort of socket wrench did you use to remove the two factory bolts on the base? They seem to be in an awkward space to access for my inexpert hands.
Hi Nick. Enjoying your videos and the options of modifications you are showing that are available for the Isuzu. I did buy a Catch Can but have not fitted as yet. I am interested in you lift size you went, did you do a GVM upgrade? Also have you installed bash plates?
This might be a stupid question, but does this mean the engine looses oil over time? I assume it does, but it’s such a small amount it wouldn’t matter as you’d do an oil change before it lost too much? Cheers
Greetings from Honduras, I left you a comment on Facebook, I have some questions, one is about oil catch can! I seeing some videos talking that broke there cars. And the other are on Facebook! Hope you answere.
Hi Nic you bloody Legend, Quick Q for ya mate, I've done 100,000k in my 17Mux no can installed. Feel like i should after watching this great video. Is it too late? Also is it possible to clean out the built up carbon in the intake by ourselfs or is a workshop job? My mechanic quoted $1000 to $1500.. cheers bud..
Hey Elvis! It's never to late to fit one but after 100k it would be a good idea to carry out an intake clean. I will actually have a video coming out this weekend all about carbon build up and how to quickly and easily clean the carbon build up in the intake. Stay tuned for that video 😀
I havnt seen them sorry. I guess if they are running the same design and filter as the provent then they should work ok. But I havnt tested one to be sure.
How many kms did it take initially to start seeing oil in the drainage tube? I’ve done about 1200km with it on now and still bugger all in the drainage tube. Maybe that’s a good thing that my engine isn’t breathing too badly!
Gday Nick, I have a holden colorado 7 that has done 40,000 Kms. Is it still a good idea to install a catch can? Or what do you think i should do before installing it. Any tips would be great. Thanks mate. 🤗
Hey mate im looking st removing my catch can from my dmax, its been on there for roughly 100k and cars done 110k just wondering is it safe to remove it now that its been on for so long? Am i better off leaving it on now? As always cheers for the videos mate.
Hey Nick, Great install vid. Is there much difference between this Western Filters Provent Filter and a Direction Plus one? Besides this one being $150 cheaper.
Great video. I've had a catch can installed and a fuel manager installed as well. When changing the pre fuel filter what's the process for priming the fuel manager? I was told that it only takes about 10 mins max to change the filter element and nothing was said about priming . I have since been told that you need to prime after changing the element.
Adam, as I see it (and I'm neither a qualified mechanic nor a lawyer), it's as Nick says - if a catch can blocks the path of gasses from the engine to the air intake then it could cause bottom end seals to blow on the engine. You notice this one that Nick is using has pressure relief valves on both intake and outlet of the catch can to avoid this situation. If seals do blow on the engine then good luck getting a warranty claim if you have any catch can fitted, because all they have to do is claim that the the catch can failed causing excessive pressure in the sump which then took out the seal(s). However any other fault condition, not attributable to a blocked PCV system that occurs is unlikely to be attributable to the catch can, so you should not have other warranty claims turned down on the basis of a catch can, but, *unfortunately that depends on the ethics of the dealer/manufacturer* to a great degree. Some are good, some are atrocious - criminal in fact...if you are concerned for your own vehicle, ascertain the reputation of your vehicle manufacturer and their dealer network first. I'd personally steer away from a catch can design that can block the flow of vapour under any circumstances. Some try to avoid this with pressure relief valves, others just ignore the possibility as sell you a ticking time bomb. The ones with pressure relief valves are a step in the right direction, but the valves themselves are also are at risk of failure you are adding to your vehicle.
@@Bennyboy-dog You're welcome to stay away from a catch can, and very noble of you to compliment the Provent as a "step in the right direction". I personally trust the engineers at Provent, a MASSIVE company built on supplying the world with these devices, rather than your humble opinion. My advice to diesel owners is to fit a Provent catch can as the first modification as soon as you buy it. My Patrol had more blowby from new than it does now at 80,000k, because the engine is still in running in phase as far as the rings are concerned. I fitted the Provent at 5000k and the intercooler, etc was already dripping with oil. My second piece of advice is dismiss the opinion of those who can't comprehend the merit of a catch can because they are wrong. Third piece of advice is only use Provent
i just installed my catch can but i noticed something like white smoke coming out from the dipstick hole.it is the same as the air/gasses that is coming out from the pcv. was that normal?
Hi Nick enjoy watching your vids especially since i just bought a d max rider, What are the catch cans worth why did you chose this brand and roughly a price on replacement filters , keep up the good work very informative to help us novices make decisions
Thanks Richard! The catch cans are about $380, this comes with everything you need to install it. I chose this kit because of where it mounts in the engine bay. I want to fit a secondary fuel filter down the track so wanted to keep that other side free. Replacement filters are about $30. 😊
It sits far enough away that there isnt any heating issues. It sits right next to the airbox and brake fluid resivour so there shouldnt be any issues at all. The turbo is shielded to keep the heat in. 😊
It would probably be the same in terms of warranty as all catch cans do have the same basic principal. There is only a warranty issue if the catch can is the direct cause of a failure or issue. The only problem with the genuine isuzu catch can is that nobody makes mounting kits for the mu-x or d-max models so you would need to build a bracket and get the correct hoses and drain tube etc.
LowRangeNick thank you for the reply. The last work I did on a car was replacing an alternator on an XF Falcon bout 15 years ago, but willing to give this a go thanks to your video!!! Keep up the great work!
If installed incorrectly or block up, is still draining oil? Cause i drain oil weekly and collect half of water bottle 600ml since i install it. And im pretty sure its right cause i read manuals and follow your video while installing. Thsnks
Cheers mate. Is there any known common failures in having a catch can fitted to the DMAX? I’ve just brought brand new DMAX last month, have gone all out with 4x4 accessories but haven’t touched anything mechanical side of it yet as the fear of voiding warranty. But have heard catch can is a must

Really well built and only $115 for the unit and $15 for replacement filters as opposed to the provents $80 filter. Really keen to see how they compare side by side.
Thats awesome, you'll have to let me know how it all goes 😊
Opposite Lock quoted me $450 fitted... I might just go that way. Another great video, thanks Nick.
Very easy install, definately something you can do yourself 😊 Cheers Michael!

@@Michael_Mears Awesome! Thats a bargain!

Thanks alot Charles! Congrats on getting the mu-x 😊
That's great! I was the same, i didn't want anything else blocking the fuel filter on that side. Hope it all works out 🛠
Thanks for the vid.

Legend!
I was advised by my ISUZU dealer if theres any problems with engine in the future whilst under warranty and catch can fitted Isuzu may decline warranty claims .Was also told that if catch cans were nearness then Isuzu and other manufactures would be fitting them in the build

Cheers monkee! There was a slight oily coating in the hoses but thankfully it hasn't had time to build up and cause any issues. Hi another great video 👍. Question if the vehicle is still under warranty would it void the warranty for any reason
It won't void your warranty but some dealers may try to use it as a reason not to cover certain things under warranty.
Thanks for the quick reply Nick champion
Nice, we dont have these in the states, just 6in lifted supercharged 80s. well I do at least Lolol
Haha go the 80!!!

Is the catch can of any benefit on a non DPF vehicle.( 2013 D MAX ) as ive been advised its NOT necessary on a non DPF vehicle.
It still does the same job and is still relevant 👍
@@LowRangeNick Excellent info re trucks having catch cans Nick. I hadn't considered that. Mate you are an awesome pit of knowledge!!!

Probably try a couple of cans of threebond diesel intake cleaner through the intake system to get rid of anything that may be present. After 60k it shouldn't be too bad.
Great vid mate
Thanks alot!
Great video, any idea if this affects warranty? Cheers
It will only affect warranty if the catch can is the direct cause of a fault or issue.
Good video Nick 👍
Hey Nick thanks for your videos, I will be using a few of them for my own installs. I want to install a pre filter fuel kit to my Mu-X and already have a dual battery system installed in that area. Do you know of what the better products on the market are and the best way to install. Cheers mate
Awesome vid thanks Nick. My Isuzu dealer told me no good for warranty. My 4jj1 is using a bit of oil. Have you heard any different?
Hi Nick

Hey nick I recently installed a catch can on my 2015 dmax and since installing I’ve noticed a ‘thump’ noise when I start it up. Any ideas? I thought maybe added pressure from catch can causing throttle valve to open more aggressively? Car runs fine once started but thump noise every time I start car. Thanks let me know what you think!
I’m running one of these on my DMAX, good investment. What are your thoughts using the Provent 200 catch can with a Munji EGR delete cable?.
Thats awesome! Im not a fan of the munji cables. I have my egr turned off in the ecu.
LowRangeNick any particular reason you don’t like the munji cable?.
Good video. Iv seen a couple ebay "provent" copy catchcan very cheap. Have you seen them or what do you think of them?
I havnt seen them sorry. I guess if they are running the same design and filter as the provent then they should work ok. But I havnt tested one to be sure.
they are more or less a 99% perfect copy. only difference is the Filter. Copys use a fine Metalmesh instead of a paper filter
How many kms did it take initially to start seeing oil in the drainage tube? I’ve done about 1200km with it on now and still bugger all in the drainage tube. Maybe that’s a good thing that my engine isn’t breathing too badly!
Takes about 3-5000km for oil to start showing in the drain tube. The filter has to become soaked and then it will allow the oil to drain down.

does fitting these catch cans void any possible warranty on Ur vehicle??
Only if the catch can is the direct cause of the failed part that is going to be covered under warranty.
That's why you take the catch can off and fit the factory parts back on before taking it in for a claim. Simples
@@MrJFoster1984 and before every service.
That's normal, it's just the crankcase venting through the dipstick tube when you pull it out.
so is it the same as your mu-x? because I've noticed other car brands dipstick hole have no smoke at all.
Are you going to have issues with heat over the long term putting it near the turbo?
It sits far enough away that there isnt any heating issues. It sits right next to the airbox and brake fluid resivour so there shouldnt be any issues at all. The turbo is shielded to keep the heat in. 😊
@@LowRangeNick Thanks mate. Looks like that's where the Ryco catch can is going then.
Have you seen the catch can made by Isuzu? Would it be better than the provent both in performance and potential warranty issues?
It would probably be the same in terms of warranty as all catch cans do have the same basic principal. There is only a warranty issue if the catch can is the direct cause of a failure or issue. The only problem with the genuine isuzu catch can is that nobody makes mounting kits for the mu-x or d-max models so you would need to build a bracket and get the correct hoses and drain tube etc.
