    Discovered that place a good couple of years ago....those mountain passes, water crossings and isolation just unbelievable. Pity you didn't experience a night or two in the real part of that kloof. Loved experiencing the ride on the video. Thxs

      I’ll definitely be back. Perhaps with a 4x4 and a little more patience next time 😉

    Many years ago I got stuck at that exact same water crossing, got water in the GS engine at 13:00 - was riding on my own. Waited till 1am the following morning when the first vehicle went past to get help! Anyway, we live to tell these tales...

      With the experience I had I can fully appreciate how that could’ve easily happened. I would’ve never made it through that Smitskraal water on my own - unless possibly being towed by a 4x4.
      That must indeed be a special tale to tell! Thank you for sharing 😀

      Unfortunately, it was the worst case scenario for that bike. The damage was pretty bad.

    Very nice!
    Out of interest, what is the wading depth of the GS? And is there a way to increase it with mods?
    I don’t have a bike, but a 4x4, but your videos show me all the places I have on my bucket list. So that’s for that

    • @GetLostAdventure
      @GetLostAdventure  7 месяцев назад +1

      To be honest with you, I have no idea what the wading depth is. From practical experience, I’d say one can take the GS pretty deep, but nowhere near the depth that a properly kitted 4x4 could do. Losing your balance in deep water is a very real possibility, plus the fact that the engine could easily take in water at that point.

      @@GetLostAdventure yeah because I even googled it with no luck.
      And yes when you mentioned how your buddy drowned his bike then only I realized how crazy that must be - you’ll be falling and your reaction needs to be switch off the bike dam quick!
      Doing trails on a bike it like playing the game and choosing “expert mode” 😂
      Well done to you guys, suddenly 4x4ing feels like cheating

    Once you had the bike recovered from the water, did you try removing the spark plugs and cranking the motor on the starter? If you see lots of water spraying out of the spark plug holes, then there may be internal engine damage such as bent conrods and maybe damaged big end bearings, but if only a little water comes out then it should be possible to get it restarted and get going again. At least as far as the nearest BMW dealer for a proper checkup. At the slow speeds and low RPM that you guys were doing, and the low traction on the wet rocks, it's very unlikely that you bent the conrods. The motor would have simply hydrolocked and stopped. Most likely you just wet the electrics and spark plug gaps. What was the outcome?

    • @GetLostAdventure
      @GetLostAdventure  6 месяцев назад

      The outcome was bad. That bike went down into the water at high revs (whiskey throttle). We got a tow truck to retrieve it the following day. Diagnosis was bad - compression was low, indicating damaged rods.

      @AdventureGrampa 6 месяцев назад

      @@GetLostAdventure Ouch! That sounds expensive. I guess the thing to do is to have the mind control to instantly shut off the throttle as you are falling - easier said than done.

      Well, the motorcycle was picked up the following day. Recovery vehicle took 2 hours to get to that spot. Another 2 hours to get out then another 2 hours to the nearest dealership in Gqeberha (PE). Diagnosis wasn’t good. The bike was eventually written off.
