Hogsback, Eastern Cape, South Africa
Hogsback is a mystical little village high up in the Amatola Mountains in the Eastern Cape (South Africa). Here you can walk among the fairy forests, swim in the waterfalls, smell the roses or create snow angels in winter.

In disbelief. Still can't believe we had this beautiful trip and sadly we haven't done anything since then.
Do you have a video on maintenance cost of the GS?
I personally haven’t made any video’s on maintenance costs. If you’re interested in getting a new bike you could ask a dealership. Another option is to raise the topic on social media groups…
Many years ago I got stuck at that exact same water crossing, got water in the GS engine at 13:00 - was riding on my own. Waited till 1am the following morning when the first vehicle went past to get help! Anyway, we live to tell these tales...
With the experience I had I can fully appreciate how that could’ve easily happened. I would’ve never made it through that Smitskraal water on my own - unless possibly being towed by a 4x4. That must indeed be a special tale to tell! Thank you for sharing 😀
Well ridden. Looks like the top of the berg. Am i right?
Yes Sir, that is somewhere in the Berg 💯. Very remote. Not the kind of place you wanna be stuck riding solo. Thank you.
@GetLostAdventure no part 3? We wanna know what happened to your mates bike? Would be interested to know how it got home...
Well, the motorcycle was picked up the following day. Recovery vehicle took 2 hours to get to that spot. Another 2 hours to get out then another 2 hours to the nearest dealership in Gqeberha (PE). Diagnosis wasn’t good. The bike was eventually written off.
Well done! I did Sani Pass on my 1250 Adv. Baviaanskloof is next on the list 💪
Awesome! Baviaanskloof is a definite must do.
13:40 We were once hiking across of the top of the Drakensberg, in and out of RSA and Lesotho. At mid-morning on a hot day, we came to a crystal-clear mountain stream and drank the delicious, sweet, cold water. We put our backpacks back on and continued walking uphill next to the stream. About 250m upstream we came upon a dead mule lying in the stream! Fortunately neither of us suffered any ill effects but it was very traumatic!
Oh my goodness 🙊😂😂 What a crazy twist that story took! Thank you for taking the time to share that with me. You literally made me laugh and you made my day 😂😂. I’m glad no one suffered any ill effects afterwards.
I Must take my XR500R up that pass very soon as my 1st offroad experience
I recently visited Sani Pass, this time in a 4x4. Current conditions are much worse than what you see in this video. Enjoy it though - it should be a blast.
Thank you so much ouens for these videos. They are encouraging and also entertaining. Thank you mtv for pimping my ride
Glad you like them!
Once you had the bike recovered from the water, did you try removing the spark plugs and cranking the motor on the starter? If you see lots of water spraying out of the spark plug holes, then there may be internal engine damage such as bent conrods and maybe damaged big end bearings, but if only a little water comes out then it should be possible to get it restarted and get going again. At least as far as the nearest BMW dealer for a proper checkup. At the slow speeds and low RPM that you guys were doing, and the low traction on the wet rocks, it's very unlikely that you bent the conrods. The motor would have simply hydrolocked and stopped. Most likely you just wet the electrics and spark plug gaps. What was the outcome?
The outcome was bad. That bike went down into the water at high revs (whiskey throttle). We got a tow truck to retrieve it the following day. Diagnosis was bad - compression was low, indicating damaged rods.
@@GetLostAdventure Ouch! That sounds expensive. I guess the thing to do is to have the mind control to instantly shut off the throttle as you are falling - easier said than done.
@@AdventureGrampa Everything you said here ☝🏼, 100% true 😀
Gee, we used to race up and down that pass in our rally cars in the '70s when it was basically just a steep gravel road. It's amazing to see how much it has deteriorated.
Wow, I had no idea that people used to race up there. These days we use that route to shake off the rust on our offroad skills 😃
Thanks for sharing with us!
My pleasure!
The best way to experience this beautiful country; good friends, motorbikes, the roads less travelled. In years to come you will look back on these memories and say 'how fortunate we were to share those times'. Living the dream. A well balanced video presentation 👏
Absolutely agree with you 💯. We are indeed blessed to be able to travel and share such amazing experiences 🙏🏼. I appreciate the feedback regarding the balanced video presentation.
I would have loved to understand what you and the kids talked about - but then again, it’s none of my business! Thanks for the great pictures😊
You are absolutely right. Some translation subtitles would’ve been appropriate.
🤙🏾👍🏾✌🏾
Gorgeous!😮
Wow! I clicked immediately I got the notification hoping to watch for at least 20min, but nope Bruno only indulged me with a snippet! Beautiful places you're travelling man ❤
So sorry for the quickie this time 😂. Otherwise thank you for following and enjoying the content ❤️
Beautiful stuff gentlemen 💯
Thank you Sir
I've been watching your videos for some time now, I just did a portion of Baviaans in decemeber as well
It was an amazing experience. I’ll definitely have to do it again someday.
Nice Video. I thought I had ridden all the tunnels in South Africa. And now I find there is one by Kouga dam. Need to plan a road trip there now.
Good reason to get out there 😀. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Great stuff as usual. Dig the shades too!
Thanks! 😎
Your content & Editing is next Level!!! Cheers for sharing
It’s always good to know that you’re following and enjoying the content. Thank you bro 👊🏼
Get yourself an AA membership.
Thanks for the advice. The bike was recovered the following day.
Discovered that place a good couple of years ago....those mountain passes, water crossings and isolation just unbelievable. Pity you didn't experience a night or two in the real part of that kloof. Loved experiencing the ride on the video. Thxs
I’ll definitely be back. Perhaps with a 4x4 and a little more patience next time 😉
The more I watch of your videos, the more I want to go there myself 😊
This is sooo good to hear. You should definitely make a plan to visit SA. Check out url: [flytoride dot com]. When it’s a miserable icy ❄️ winter on your side of the world, you fly to the warm and sunny south, get onto an adventure bike and ride amazing routes to beautiful locations. They even include off-road training as part of the package.
Very nice! Out of interest, what is the wading depth of the GS? And is there a way to increase it with mods? I don’t have a bike, but a 4x4, but your videos show me all the places I have on my bucket list. So that’s for that
To be honest with you, I have no idea what the wading depth is. From practical experience, I’d say one can take the GS pretty deep, but nowhere near the depth that a properly kitted 4x4 could do. Losing your balance in deep water is a very real possibility, plus the fact that the engine could easily take in water at that point.
@@GetLostAdventure yeah because I even googled it with no luck. And yes when you mentioned how your buddy drowned his bike then only I realized how crazy that must be - you’ll be falling and your reaction needs to be switch off the bike dam quick! Doing trails on a bike it like playing the game and choosing “expert mode” 😂 Well done to you guys, suddenly 4x4ing feels like cheating
Got through it all like a pro, well done, hope your friends bike is easily fixed 👍
Unfortunately, it was the worst case scenario for that bike. The damage was pretty bad.
Well done Bruno, i can see now that the worst was not over but you handled all that well. I missed out on a lot for sure, the place is beautiful. Thank you for a beautiful video.
@guyonbike I believe we shall redo this trip some time in the future once again. Thank you for being an amazing travel partner and fellow adventurer. In the end, all that matters is that everyone got home safe.
@@GetLostAdventure we are definitely going back. Thank you for the memorable trips brother.
Sure Bruno, we are very proud of you brother, what a tide and awesome scenery you should is there... Keep the flag flying high for fellow bikers you dearest SPARTAN✊🏽🥂👌🏾
Kea leboha 🙏🏼 Itu. Thank you SPARTAN ✊🏼
You are a fine rider - very skilled! Thanks for sharing this.
Thank you kindly!
Happy the rider is fine. Bike can be replaced
In the end, that’s all that matters 🙏🏼
i think i would have opted to turn around and missed out on the great content. Well done gents, for your bravery & adventurous spirit.
Thank you brother 👊🏼 😀
Did that long river crossing back around 2003 with an 1150gs and trail wing tyres, the rocks were also covered in a green algae..... Made for an interesting crossing and a few invented swear words. Well done👍
The stuff great memories are made of 😀
What a pickle glad you both kept your cool and overcame the water.
Well, there is a twist. Be sure to look out for part 2. I don’t want to spill the beans just yet…
You’re a good storyteller , I love your cinematography and your choice of music. I hope to be in the Baviaanskoof next year.
Thank you for the feedback 🙏🏼. I really appreciate it and I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I hope you make out there, it really is worth it. I’ll definitely be going back there someday - perhaps with a 4x4.
Words have been taken out of me. 😢
This was an emotional one for me - I was working with a heavy heart. 😔
@@GetLostAdventure I struggled watching but I'm happy I watched till the end.
Excellent video and you ride well. 👍👍👍
Thank you! 👍
That fact that you actually stop for accesment of the troublesome section speaks of maturity and responsibility. To many adventure riders believe in only the 'compentency' of the bike. Believing the bike can go anywhere and thus, will take them there.... NOT TRUE. It is the rider skills that take the rider and bike through whatever lies ahead. The bike must just be able to take the hammering. Well done Bri.
It’s even more important to take the time to assess those troublesome sections when you’re traveling alone. If you can avoid it, you definitely don’t need to be breaking the bike or yourself when you’re out in the middle of nowhere. Thank you 😊
Your videos deserve many more views and likes 😊
Thank you so much 😀. I really appreciate that. More importantly, I’m glad you’re enjoying the content.
Great Video, nice choice of music and super voiceover 😃👍
Thank you very much!
Great video. I also plan to visit this December. I am looking for accommodation recommendations in the area . Even a good campsite will do. Do you know any if you slept over in the town. Any there any other activities to do like boat cruises in the area? Thanks
Hi there. I’m sorry I didn’t get to respond earlier. Did you manage to do the trip in December? Accommodation options are at Katse Dam itself and a village called Ha Lejone, which is about 50-60km away. There’s also a town called Thaba-Tseka, which is about 60km of terrible gravel road from Katse.
@@GetLostAdventure Thanks for the reply, we did manage to do a trip. We camped right at Katse Dam for 2 nights at the old information centre which overlooks the damwall. The views were incredible!
@@tinashechoga2613 that’s great. I actually forgot about that campsite, yet I always stop there to enjoy the view 😀
Nice one man. Like the way u interact with the locals too. Your tone and narration skills on point... Can tell how much living and enjoying these moments.
I appreciate the feedback - thank you 🙏🏼 😊
Brilliant video thanks for sharing😊
Glad you enjoyed it 😀
A little gem of a road very few people know about. 😉
Absolutely 👌🏼

Dude, didn’t we assist you yesterday on the N1? You were on your way to Bloem on a cruise bike though
Definitely not me. Yesterday I was cruising around Jozi very nicely on my Harley 😂. Good job assisting a biker in need though 👊🏼
Well, I guess you might be referring to Saturday. I was at home taking it easy.
