That’s not depression...depression is a prolonged feeling of constant and persistent sadness. I’d say it’s more like recovering from depression as someone who is diagnosed

idea: put a bunch of emotions in a hat (eg; angry, sad, happy, scared, embarrassed). Draw the sketch/outline. and THEN pick an emotion. So the emotion comes from the colouring or added extras. I think it would be a good test and use of colour theory

I actually liked the small smile. It made it seem like she had fallen asleep and she was dreaming, and what may seem like depressing to us is peaceful to her, perhaps representing a reprieve from the chaos of the world, as the loud colors and noises fade to soft gray tones.
Deep
Most people don't realize that beauty can be found in darkness sometimes. The true beauty of this piece is that you poured much of your true self into it, I think. I see it as a kind of tribute to the person you lost and imagine it has more meaning for you than some of your other art. That's not to say that you don't put yourself into your other art or that your other art is lacking meaning. I'm just saying I feel this one is maybe a bit more meaningful than others.

I’m just gonna say I have like serious respect for ppl that use oil paints bc I didn’t have black and the only black I had was oil paint and i didn’t know how long they took to dry and I was just so amazed that ppl use oil paint regularly and make masterpieces with it

A tip for the people who have to swatch their colours every time they use:-
Cut out 1cm×1cm boxes (small basically) from your sketchbook paper (or the paper you use usually) and make swatches on those cut out boxes. And then tape them to the barrel of your marker... You'll never need anymore swatching!
I personally use water based markers. So I've taped the swatch of the marker and the swatch of water mixed version of it.
It helps with taking out the desired colour with having to test them all
Nice tip. I have Copic markers for skin tones and it took me a while to find one that works for certain characters I have made.

I have to admit, this is one of my favourite challenges. Having every all of one colour from your own art supplies kind of forces the mind into creativity. Like the impression that colour gives you, wheather that's sad, happy or angry. You are able to make that colour coresponded with the "vibe" that colour gives YOU. It also forces you too add more detail, where you thought it didn't need more detail. That is if you're fully committed to the challenge ofc.

Hi! My favorite color is gray. It's me. 😂
I did have to take color theory for this to happen... When I learned that mixing actual complementary colors doesn't make brown, it makes gray. I mixed an absolutely garrish orange and royal blue together and got the most delicate dove gray and my mind was blown. ❤

As someone who’s going into interior design I love gray. Each hue has its own colour palette that just make a room unique. Like lighter hues and pastel pinks or earth tones and even a dark blue or brown. Ugh I could talk about gray all day. 😂😂

I love watching your videos. Videos like these where you don’t take your mistakes too seriously makes me feel so much better about not being “perfect” all the time in my art. It’s much more realistic and I appreciate that you show that to everyone and stay so goofy and happy anyways and just keep trying. It gives me hope to keep working on my art❤️

Grey is one of my favorite color. I did a lot of black and white photography and learned to love the different greys because they gave such depth to my pictures. The greys in film photography (digital is getting better) are so pretty.

Light grey and light yellow are my favorite colors. Light grey reminds me of calmness and peace. It's interesting how our brains relate things to colors and its different for everyone.

But the main thing is, the illustration is fantastic Waffles. I can't believe you were able to get such different shades with gray. And overall, I think you managed to find the perfect amount of contrast. Magnifique 😍

Interestingly, I once read a Steven Universe fanfic with a similar analogy. The character Lars was going through a depressive episode, and Steven was trying to understand it. Lars said he would want to do things, but it would never work, because his depression kept him from it, to which Steven said "[so it's] kind of like trying to draw something but you have a broken pencil?".
Just funny how that was so similar.
I loved the analogy. Nobody realizes your pencil is broken. You HAVE a pencil, it must just be your fault that it's isn't drawing.

I did something similar decades ago. I was in the back of a dark tunnel in the fetal position like yours. Instead of clouds, I had hands... one was pointing at me, one was running another finger over the pointer (shame shame), one was holding up the middle finger at me, one was in a fist, and one was palm up in the 'stop, don't come near me' pose. I always love hanging out with you on here. You have inspired me and my own art has improved, even tho I don't take the time to do it often. Love you.

That one actually came in a Scrawlrbox and there was another one or two with it. I remember being amused by the names and as a Metallica fan this one stuck in my head but I can't remember what the others were. I will see if I can find them in my mountain of Scrawlrbox supplies and let you know! 😊
'Heart of Gold' was the other one (Scrawlrbox website for the win! Didn't even need to get out of bed haha!)
After looking up the packet on Amazon I saw the pink one was called 'Berry Nice' so I don't think they were song titles.

As an artist I watcha lot of different art channels, some make me sad, some make me happy, and some make me jealous, but I always try to keep a positive mind and remember that I have only been doing art for 3 years, and it takes a lot more time to get to something like this, art is very anatomy focused when drawing things that are alive, so it takes a lot of work and studying to get to an art level like this, so I try to remember not to get get jealous or sad since I am just not as expeirenced as a lot of the artists I watch are.

Sometimes it helps me to know that it only has power over me if I let it, so when I feel this desire to not experience things that will help, I know that its the darkness scared of losing me. Stop saying that you're butchering your drawing!!!!! They all turn out so beautiful at the end! I honestly love the silver. It really brings out the lines, and it makes the drawing so interesting to look at!
Gray is a lovely color; it's really nice for interior design. I think it's very underrated actually.

When you were
talking about the reasons for drawing this I could really relate. I also draw and I love expressing my feelings through drawing 2020 was also very hard for me and there was a lot of being crumpled on the floor in grungy clothes also. I lost my dad to covid and it was worst time of my life but I know others have gone through this and I'm not alone. I love the finished artwork it looks amazing. Take care rin ♥️
