    • @wvu05
      @wvu05 2 года назад +1

      @Erick L EPO wasn't a thing when Lemond raced. He had an oxygen capacity that didn't change in his time in the peloton. If he was doping, after exposing Asteriskstrong, he would have been exposed the way everyone who was a threat to him who was (not quite as) dirty (as he was), so if Lemond was dirty, why didn't anyone ever have the goods on him? Why did his placing fall off a cliff once EPO became a thing?

    • @mrkipling2201
      @mrkipling2201 2 года назад +1

      @@wvu05 agreed. EPO was the reason he retired. It’s funny how when it became prevalent in the early 90’s, Greg couldn’t keep up with the blokes who were on the juice. That shows me that he was clean.

    • @wvu05
      @wvu05 2 года назад +1

      @@mrkipling2201 Definitely. His VO2 max is only rivaled by cross-country skiers. People don't really understand how much of an advantage that really is. That's what clued Lemond into the fact that Asteriskstrong was a fake.
      The thing that convinced me that Asteriskstrong definitely wasn't clean (although something always seemed off about him to me) was when he barely broke three hours for the NYC Marathon and downed gel packs every mile, calling it the hardest thing he has ever done. I'm not saying that he should have been an elite as a runner, but someone who rose to the top of the world of another endurance sport should easily break 2 1/2. And runners don't need gels or chews that often in order to keep energy up, so this level of suffering was absurd for someone of his supposed fitness.

    I was into road racing in the '80s (I sucked) and attended a training camp in November of '85 that was put on by Greg and Steve Bauer. I just wanted to say he is the same person as he appears in all the videos: genuinely nice, personable, helpful, and a great conversationalist. He was my hero throughout his career, and still is today.

      Those of us who grew up racing in the ‘80’s (I stated in 1982 at age 14) owe a huge debt to Greg for making cycling a “legitimate” sport for a small, odd group of Americans! He was not only a great rider on the world stage, but also seemed like a nice, unassuming, “normal” guy who just happen to ride a bike fast!

    I was on the back of a motorcycle during the Arlington stage of the ‘89 Trump tour. And we rode up alongside the pack next to Lemond as he was talking to another rider at 28mph. I thought, “here’s my chance to hear what they talk about in the peloton”. I was expecting something related to tactics or something important. Nope. They were talking about vacation spots. I was so confused.

    Placed 3rd in his first TDF, if not riding it with bronchitis he would have won in 1984, gave up the lead as ordered to by his team to help his teammate Hinault win his 5th TDF in 1985, won the TDF in 1986, shot and missed 1987 and 1988, won 1989 TDF and still holds the record for the fastest time trial in TDF history overcoming a 50 second deficit on the last day, won it it again in 1990, was always in contention always rode from the front, no one rode a bike and looked as good or so natural on a bike with a VO2 max of 92, unheard of. He easily could have won 7 to 10 TDF if not for being shot, getting lead poisoning etc. He was the most talented TDF rider to ever straddle a bike. And was 100% clean, and won against riders, even in his day were on the juice.

    The two years he was out pretty sure there was no one to match him. The 1990 tour was the turning point for Greg, yes he won it but was clearly not the same rider. Post 1990, I'm a firm believer that his career was cut short by EPO misuse by other riders who were no where near his ability. A really great champion and the reason I still ride a bike at 60.

    • @brianmcg321
      @brianmcg321 2 года назад +3

      Absolutely. In an interview, Greg talked about how in the 1991 tour he was in the best shape of his life. However, once the tour started him and his team were getting dropped on the flat stages. It was crazy how fast the peloton was. I just watched a 1991 tour video and multiple times Ligget would comment that the peloton was 15 minutes ahead of schedule and finishing races faster than anticipated. Pretty crazy him saying that what we know now about the riders then.

    • @DHTCF
      @DHTCF 2 года назад +1

      Agree re those two years. And without the shooting, he might have won a monument (he rode well in them before the accident), the Giro.
      The interesting thing about 1991 is that Mottet - another rider always said to be committedly clean - finished ahead of Greg. So maybe he just wasn't the same in a long race by then, for all that he was looking great until that second day in the Pyrenees.

    • @nelsonhibbert5267
      @nelsonhibbert5267 Год назад +1

      I'm a firm believer that he was doomed to start going down hill at this time as he was riding with 30 pellets of lead in his body from the shooting accident (which most likely led to the development of mitochondrial myopathy, and ultimately his early retirement). The rest of the peloton on EPO wouldn't of made life any easier for an already damaged body to keep up with.
