Phenyx Pro PTU-71 wireless mic system vs Sennheiser and Shure

  • Phenyx PTU-71 wireless mic system, available on Amazon for about $130. Here it is being compared to systems from Sennheiser and Shure. No EQ or procerssing used so you can hear the actual sound of the mics. The Phenyx can be matched fairly closely with the right processing. For simple event purposes, however, it works amazingly well for the price.

I can vouch for the PTU-71. At church, we had a grandfathered Shure PG188 receiver with a PG2/PG58 handheld and a bodypack, 13 years old. Paid around $500 for it, and even though it is discontinued, someone is selling them new with 2 handhelds on Amazon currently for $519. We decided to add on this past fall, and I decided to order a PTU-71 new on eBay for right at $100 with one handheld and one bodypack. I also ordered another handheld from Phenyx direct for $38. We mainly use the two handhelds, but I eventually ordered another bodypack and mics from Phenyx for around $60, thus giving us handheld/bodypack choice on the Phenyx. The Phenyx was amazingly clear, and the sound was a little better than the Shure. Fast forward to 2 weeks ago. The Shure mics started sounding like water was running in the background, and this past Sunday the receiver was dead; no reception, and when I unplugged/plugged back in, a loud audio bang ensued. The Shure had already had a replacement receiver, and the PG2/PG58 had gone through service/replacement, both out of warranty, the unit was discontinued, and even though the FCC doesn't allow sales on that frequency (H7), it was still legal to use. I could have sent the receiver to Shure for repairs, minimum $75 and 3 weeks. I cut my losses and ordered a second PTU-71 handheld/bodypack combo on eBay new for $113, and a second handheld on Amazon for $38. Better range than the old Shure, though it's not the quality of a $3000 system, I would put it up against a $500 Shure or Samson system any day of the week. If we get half the longevity out of them, we already will be ahead, as the Shure cost of ownership over 13 years with repairs and replacements was over $1000.

Great review. I recently purchased the PTU-71B after having the 7000A for about 6 months. My son and I do local pro sound for gospel quartets and a Motown Review group. We absolutely LOVE Phenyx Pro. Thanks for sharing.

I don't really understand why some people are saying that the Phenyx Pro sounds better (from other reviews/comments). Is it simply because there's more bass due to the heavier proximity effect? I personally find the Phenyx Pro's plosives and breaths annoying. In terms of sound quality, I would say Shure and Sennheiser are objectively better (I think Shure is marginally better than Sennheiser). But apparently, some find Phenyx Pro subjectively better. I think the handhelds are definitely usable though.
As for the headset, I think if you position the Phenyx Pro to the side instead of directly in front it may be usable. While placed directly in front, I doubt anyone would enjoy listening to it. High-passing may fix a lot of it, but I think positioning would be easier.

Hello blessings: I am a pastor of a church and I wanted to ask your opinion about this kit phenyx pro ptu 71b that brings hand, lapel and headband, how they sound for a church, I'm interested in the hand and headband for the church and the lapel for my study. I hope you can help me before buying. Thank you

How big is the area that you need to cover? And where are you located?
I sometimes have to have line of sight to the receiver to reduce interference, but I’m using them in the NYC area so wireless is very crowded. I also have the antennas kind of buried in a rack, so it definitely helps when I extend the antennas with cables and mount them outside of the rack. I did just use six of these tonight at a workshop and I used the Sennheiser wireless for the two vocalists as well as for the main speaker, but I used the phenyx wireless as mics in the audience so that people can ask the speaker questions, and they work really well in that capacity. I have used the belt packs and handhelds in other situation‘s for main presenters, however, and no one had any complaints about the sound quality next to the shure wireless that I own. I did replace the headset mic itself with another headset mic that sounds better, but also was not expensive and the phenyx packs worked very well with them. Honestly, most of the time I don’t bother using the countryman or DPA headsets anymore because I’ve had some break, and the generic ones sound just about as good for a fraction of the price. If you buy any other headset to work with the phenyx , you need to buy one with a T3F connector. If you search for that on Amazon or eBay you will find them.
Overall, if your budget is limited or you just need to direct your church’s funds to other areas, I think he will do very well with these

Blackout Gotti Beats i believe they are ew500 g3 but I will confirm when i am there on Wednesday. The handheld capsule is a 945 I , but again, will confirm.
The m7cl is now replaced with a digico sd9, and we now have 2 sennheiser ew500 g4 systems. Also, I replaced the headset that came with the phenyx with one of the inexpensive double earhook headsets on amazon, and it sounds much better. The connector is a ta3f. I think I should update this video with the newer equipment.
Also, I have been testing the Phenyx ptu-7000 with handheld and just got 2 belt packs with some inexpensive double earhook headsets that I tried on an event this weekend- they held up very well against sennheiser/ countryman combo. The ptu-7000 does sound better than the ptu-71 (which does sound good). I use them alongside my own shure ulx systems for some events I do that are not through the church. One example is a leadership class, and I use my own ptu-71 system (I bought my own after giving the one phenyx gave me to test to the church) and my ptu-7000 system (4 channels) to leave on each table for students to ask questions to presenters rather than having mic runners use 2 mics, and they have worked really really well for that. The only bad thing is that the display on the handheld turns off to conserve battery (fresh alkalines easily last over 9 hours in the handhelds when I use them like this), so people keep pressing the button, which mutes it when the mic is already powered on. I taped over the buttons but they still do it!

i unfortunately bought Phenyx products and the PTU71B. The rack mount adapters are trash, flimsy and the holes barely line up on a rack. Terrible cheap stuff

I’m sorry to hear that. I don’t have that issue with mine, the rack adapters fit with no issues and they hold the units in place. To be fair, there is other equipment above and below, which also helps.
Aside from the rack hardware, how did you find them in terms of sound and performance?
