Pretty Little Baka Guy had me from the start. I got all my SK from Zero Records after that. I was so in love with their happy sound I wrote them when they lived in Osaka, and they wrote me back and even sent backstage photos. Shonen Knife is original, pure rock and roll.
The current Shonen Knife lineup are great, but I feel like I really missed out on something special with it was Michie and Atsuko with Naoko. Guess I should just be thankful to be a fan and that I got to see them play my hometown last year.
Shonen Knife is Cuteness Personified. Even when they hit a wrong note or sing out of pitch it's adorable. They gained more polish later, especially during the Ritsuko/Emi years, but their early years are the best.
I liked Shonen Knife in the 90's. I stopped listening to SK after Happy Hour in 1998. I bought Let's Knife, Rock Animals, Brand New Knife, Explosion cd single and Happy Hour. I trying to catch up now with their 2000's and 2010's teens output.
I bet when they were just getting started, they heard something like, "Come on, you guys - nobody is gonna want to hear a bunch of songs about food and animals."
This band has very poor advertisment. This year they had played in Cracow in Poland and only a small group of people knew about it. I really wanted to go but didn't know ...
no wonder the girl on bass left the band a few years later - a cursory look at her expression here gives me the impression that she would like to be elsewhere! Oh and don't you find it odd that a band with english lyrics - yet they can barely manage a word when interviewed?
Not surprising at all. It is easy to learn the lyrics phonetically without understanding what you are saying. Parrots don't understand what they are saying and yet they speak pretty well sometimes.
Since they write lyrics themselves they obviously can understand what they are singing. And writing lyrics for those who are not very good in English is actually much easier than conversing. I can judge about that from my own experience.
Red Pancake the lead singer can "get by" in English - I have some early albums of theirs and some of the songs are in Japanese.I don't see what's so bad about that - unless they had their commercial eyes set on the US market (who would not accept a band speaking in anything other than English)!
They sang and spoke in English for British TV, because you don't understand Japanese! Simple as that. Bandleader Naoko is much more proficient in her second language now. Bassist Michie's grey-faced expression comes from the dread of making a technical error (she does), and also the unhappiness of being on the spot in front of a camera with a great deal to say, and a number of obstacles in the way. The band had been together for over a decade, but they were pretty far out at sea, here. That's not comfortable...
+shoknifeman2 mikado Not to mention, they are in their 35th year, and selling more CDs than ever, while they have made 3 World tours in the last 5 years! Can you beat that?
ROTFLMSO! I'm a big fan of bands like Rush, ELP, Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Pink Floyd, Beatles, etc.... I'm also a huge fan of Shonen Knife. Do I care that they don't go from a 4/4 time sig to a 3/4 to a 7/8 to a 17/32 to a 47/64? Pfft! No, their musicianship is not the best, their singing isn't the best, their lyrics....are a bit....simple. LOL. But these girls ROCK!! I put them right up there with the other bands I mentioned, and if you don't understand why there's not much hope for you. P.S. Michie, the world of music will always miss you.
Hard to believe Naoko turns 60 in December...and is still rocking!

Shonen Knife is the greatest band that most people have never heard of, but should!
The current Shonen Knife lineup are great, but I feel like I really missed out on something special with it was Michie and Atsuko with Naoko. Guess I should just be thankful to be a fan and that I got to see them play my hometown last year.
The Yamano Sisters and Michie...the original formation.
Old school Shonen Knife is awesome! How could anyone NOT love this?? I miss Michie!
Priceless document of the original group. Good video and sound quality makes it a must-have. Thanks for uploading!
This is more punk than many sweaty, violent, ugly, spiky and leather bands around!!!
+thiago lima They are nicknamed "The World's happiest punk band"!
all ramones baby lol. very punk, thank you
Excellent quality video of old school SK. I must say Michie is a highly underrated bassist.
In my opinion both Michie and Atsuko (on drums) are both highly underrated
I agree but sadly,it looks like she will never play bass ever again.
plasticshapes I agree completely.
Thank you for this excellent quality film from 92. Did not think anything this good existed of SK
Love this group. Hearts

Atsuko sure looks as she's having fun singing "Boys"

Great video. Saw them around this time period in San Francisco and this is pretty much how I remember them.
This is brilliant! Thank you so much for uploading this.
Way back when -20 years ago Naoko with her Yamaha RGX and Michie on her Yamaha 400 - Thanks for Uploading some Classic Knife
Naoko was so cute with short hair
First gig I ever went to was on this tour, at the Zodiac Oxford, with BMX Bandits.
One of those rare times when Michie's hair was much longer than Naoko's (Let's Knife tour)
Fruit Loop Dreams - Its and easy Chord song to learn on Guitar !
Great early video...still rocking...
Hoola Naoko este es un super grupo saludos... Sudamerica
Note that Michie sings Johnny Johnny Johnny before it actually came out on the NEXT album, ROCK ANIMALS
I forgot Atsuko sang lead on Boys.
thanks
Love this old video. Says part 3 or something, Where are the other 2 videos? Thanks
Can you sell this to me on cd?
山のあっちゃん、中谷さん、山野直子さんのオリジナル少年ナイフだー!

Hello Kitty is a punk rocker!
great wow

Amazing band. Great show. Lamest crowd ever.
my guess is that the interviews were done at a different time
11:30 *highlight*
lol. this is great!

danielscissorhands here's the deal Japanese people sing in their own language....

lol, these girls can't even play the easiest Dream Theater song. Poor technique.
+TvuxoRoiale Who ASKED you? Don't like them, then bugger off!
