My favorite song by the great band Shonen Knife Enjoy! All music and images are property of their respected owners. I just put them into a sideshow for fun!
Me too! We all feel like cats sometimes, I think. We all feel like we're in the timeless zone, the Milky Way. We all like we don't know who we are. I know I sure do. And everybody wants to be a cat.
I played this song a bunch of times around 1994 helping me grieve the death of my favorite cat ever, midnight (r.i.p. 1984-1994) when i was 19. love cats (today i have 2, including an all black male that i adopted b/c of his resemblance to midnight), and i always LOVE the knife!
I've been identifying as a cat since 2020, when I realized that you could do that sort of thing. I've since found out that "feline" is actually the 67th or 68th gender - can't remember which one. (After you hit #3, it gets kind of weird.)
True. But these lyrics have absolutely 0% to do with the book. It's almost like they saw the title and then just made up this song to be cute. The book is mostly a cat overhearing intellectual and semi-intellectual conversations between its master and his friends. The author wanted to mock Japanese society trying to integrate with western ideas and values. The cat character is merey an artistic device so it seems like these are the cat's opinions instead of the author's. These girls would have surely read this book as it's a part of the Japanese curriculum. Wish they could have written some thought provoking lyrics about it instead.
@@redditbanditvideos225 Haven't SK just done a shorthand version, or their take on the novel? You may be right but the novel is very funny and charming, even in garbled translation :www.aozora.gr.jp/cards/000148/files/790.html (Turn on Google translate) and aren't most SK songs full of garbled charm? I think they are just carrying on the tradition. People don't seek out SK for treatises on the human condition, or the then fear of intellectual Japanese during the Meiji period of cultural appropriation by the Western world, which it seems they have largely resisted. They have then , it seems to me written 'thought-provoking' lyrics albeit by proxy with the title, or just by happy accident.
I think so too. Anyone who dismisses them as too poppy or cute just needs to listen a little closer. They could make you laugh AND they could break your heart. That's why I love them.
Gary Waleik (formerly of Big Dipper) wrote an excellent article on Shonen Knife in the 90's where he discussed how truly rebellious they are. In the west, we often see a song like Lazybones as kind of cute, but to Japanese culture, they were another matter altogether. I love that band.
Cool! I'll have to read that article some time. Some people say that writing about music is like dancing about architecture, but I've never agreed. I LOVE music-writing, as long as its well-written and imaginative.
I remember when children and I first came out and I heard about them through news and stuff. I got let's knife out of curiosity and boy they were a revelation they are so cool even to this day. The other day I came across 2019 concert clip of them doing a cover of the Ramones Sheena Is a Punk Rocker what a revelation it is so cool. They are real Trailblazers I'm pretty brave what they did when they first came out because that was so unheard of a Japanese girl group let's hear it for girl power
Yes!!!! My favorite shonen knife song, so simple and yet inspiring.....so sweet and simple and transformative. Love also sailor moon. To girl power and beyond....
I am a cat is a famous Japanese novel, but this song reminds me of the anime version of the novel Night on the Milky Way Train/Galactic Railway, where all the characters are cats
Apparently, every Saturday is now considered #Caturday Well, I figure what better way to celebrate the oddest day I've ever heard with Shonen Knife's "I am a Cat"
Soo much sweet sweet chimey candy sweeeet(!!!) just perfect anchored by that monstrous guitar, every time it happens is just great... And the end, i adore the way they just let it grow into something fuzzy as a cat
@NuclearSeagull - Yep I finally saw the band in Toronto this on the fall tour, I had a great time, of course, I wish I could have seen them when Michie and Atsuko were still there, but, Ritsuko is great and Emi is just the sweetest little thing!
I wish a was as small and lean as a cat, climbing around in an old city, making a little home in the burrows of anywhere.. If only i was as small as a cat it would be great, man!
I join you in strong opposition to this unfortunate trend. This video informs all Shonen Knife fans of their need to become diligent in stomping out this scourge.
I try to live by and according to the lyrics of this song.

that's hillarious
So should will all. Cats are the superior creatures
Don't we all.
"In a moment I become a sweet little cat
And I dance on a flying saucer"
Best day EVAR!!!!!

This song is even more relevant today. I actually became a cat through a process of kafkaesque self pity.
Ok
I'm really proud of you! Good job!
it’s so sad
Especially now that East Asian Pop culture is more internationally known since the pandemic.

"I am a Cat" is a very famous Japanese novel written by Sōseki Natsume:

@@redditbanditvideos225 nah i think it's more how American bands do songs like "Rip Van Winkle," "1984", or "Lolita"

Singing lead, Atsuko, now BACK with the Knife after a 15 year break!
Did anyone else know this was curt kobains favorite band and he recorded with them once its so sweet
I had no idea but they are amazing and he just went up a million notches in my cool book
How do they manage to always be so poppy and CATchy and awesome?!
Because they had SAINO - which is, apparently, Japanese for TALENT. And because they were wild-cats at heart!
To me this song is not very catchy but it definitely infantile.
@@jutjubow thanks for your opinion Stan
The guitar riff in the middle of the song is the best
This is one of the happiest songs in the world. Cats rule! :-)
I find you everywhere
@@LUISUNBREAKABLEMUSIC 😎 Cool
@@danielscissorhands Btw your the Ramones videos are sick, thanks
@@LUISUNBREAKABLEMUSIC Thanks. :-)
So glad I finally found out about this band.
One of the best bands on the planet.

OMG, this album helped me survive university!!! And my family!!

favorite song of all time i have so much nostalgia for shonen knife
This is the first time hearing this song and it's just the best, it's the best song I've ever heard
Damn, they are so insanely therapeutic.
My mom used to play this song all the time when I was younger and to this day it’s my favorite song :)
I love you, Shonen Knife.
The perfect song for surviving the quarantine. It frees my mind.
I didnt know i could be a cat. I'll give it some thought.
I am a cat is a famous Japanese novel, but this song reminds me of the anime version of the novel Night on the Milky Way Train/Galactic Railway, where all the characters are cats
idk why but I feel so sad when I listen to this
Is it because you arn’t a cat?
Just kidding. I feel
Me too! I thought I was the only one.
Yeah, specially the "I discover whiskas of a cat in a timeless zone" part.
"I don't know who I am."
it's a weirdly emotional song, i almost cried at it earlier today
This song is so much wonderful. It's the theme song to my life.
Encapsulates the true spirit of rock n' roll; ie good, unpretentious fun.
Love Shonen Knife, this song always reminds me of The Rolling Stones song As Tears Go By.
This is playing at my funeral.
Only 4 people understood this.
My favorite albums from the are Let's Knife and Happy Hour. Honorable mention: Brand New Knife!
Apparently, every Saturday is now considered #Caturday
Well, I figure what better way to celebrate the oddest day I've ever heard with Shonen Knife's "I am a Cat"
Best japanese band ☺️🤘🏽😁🇧🇷
