- One of this former music reviewer's favorite bands,Osaka's SHONEN KNIFE
appeared on the "Viva Variety" show (seen on the cable-TV Comedy Central Channel).
They did the songs "Daydream Believer" (a cover of a Monkees song); and
"Sushi Bar" (think that's the title).

22 years ago and still fresh. Cobain was right; they are awesome. The original lineup of Naoko Yamano, Atsuko Yamano, and Michie Nakatani. Hard to believe, but Naoko will turn 60 this year and she is still rocking hard.
I still have this on VHS tape (recorded at normal speed, I think, so pretty good quality), as well as a Cibo Matto performance from another episode. Perhaps I'll digitize them all one of these days if I can figure out which tapes they're on. Viva Variety was a great show.
It would be awesome because this particular episode was very memorable with Charles Durning performing in the skit 'Male Order Grooms.' Wonderful!

I try to run Fair Use items when I can. There's SO much missing TV stuff whereby the copyright owners are too lazy to put them up as a download (even though it wouldn't cost them very much,and fans still demand old material.)

Naoko never ages. She was 37 in this gig...and looks about 14. Agreed, Emi and Ritsuko are now the heart of the band.

I watched a lot of Comedy Central in the '90's so why the fuck don;t I remember this show "Viva Variety?
Naoko still looks so young now. Love seeing this original lineup, although Atsuko does a great job on bass now, and Etsuko, EMI and now Risa really add the punch. Great band!!!

Naoko turns 60 this year and is still a wonderful person and a beautiful woman. Atsuko is 57...and they are both still rocking. What would you pay to see Michie return for one final gig?
@Shoknifeman You're certainly not referring to the band.....like I said,I was only interested in SK,but
I kept the other announcers' taglines in. I like to save introductions to acts when possible.
SK is btw,still around after all these years.
To be 100% accurate, the 2nd song is called "Sushi Bar Song"... but, it's often refered to as just "Sushi Bar"
This was the 1999 Happy Hour tour... Michie's last! (I don't know what Naoko was thinking wearing that pseudo cowboy look 9_9)

I was living out of the country when that show was on, and I never got to see it until now.
Though I've only seen a few moments, clearly it is one of the finest shows ever. Way better than Ed Sullivan ever was.

@RonaldVaughan Being a professional music critic sounds kind of fun; mind you, I generally prefer music before 1970, especially Rockabilly and Big Band. (Jgirl-punk being a notable exception). On my forum, I do most of the music reviews (Mostly SK CDs...but, i do them as a fan, so, I rarely critisize! haha)

@RonaldVaughan No, of course not, I am very familliar with Shonen Knife... planning to see them live again come Oct 20th ; I was saying that the tall person with red hair looks like a guy in drag. Shonen Knife are my very favorite band since 1997 , i run an SK forum ^_^
