There are probably a slew of different reasons for that, just like the fact that they listen to, and can sing the chorus of "It's a long way to Tipperary" in english in a later scene. Most probably it is a correct homage to the fact that the Royal Navy was the envy of the entire seafaring world for several hundred years. The Germans tried, during both world wars, to build an ocean going navy to equal the Royal Navy (see the German "Hochseeflotte"), but failed. German naval officers both looked up to the Royal Navy and saw them as worthy adversaries. Both Lehmann (the main character and captain) and Thomsen are career naval officers in line duty, and have most probably had a healthy respect and admiration for the Royal Navy during their earlier careers.
Ich glaube, meine Frau kennt den Film - die sagt das seit 20 Jahren jeden Abend zu mir.
😂
One of the best anti-war movies ever created! 100% CGI free.
They're usually better if they're not CGI. The takeoff scene from Memphis Belle is more proof.
Das ist Thomsen, von der alten Garde, nur noch besoffen. :-)
Thomsen is a legend.
Seine Stimme...einmalig!!
We've all been there.
Thomsen is me every Saturday night in my local bar.

I've been wondering that too. That's the exact reason I looked this scene up and am reading comments

"Ich bin nicht in der Lage zu ficken!"
„Ich bin nicht in der Lage zu ficken“ !!!
Would've been awesome if there was a British film where one of the Englishmen is drunk and says that, as a homage to this wonderful film.
