I'm answering your comment a year later but I'm in the exact same situation. I've been driving for years but I love to see his videos. I wish I had them when I was learning, it would have been smoother.
@@ConquerDriving It definitely does, no doubt. One question please. What techniques do you use, when you drive back ward with out wearing out your clutch? Maybe that could be next video. If you don't already have one.
I’d just like to say thank you to this channel. I passed my test 3 years ago and didn’t get my own car until now. When I did I found myself stalling constantly, hills were impenetrable. I wondered why, and spent about a week watching your videos. Now I don’t stall at all, I’m much more comfortable with the clutch. Thanks a lot for ensuring my car wasn’t a waste of money.
I'm only halfway through this video and it's already tiers above any other clutch control video I've seen, and I've seen like most of them. Very good job man.
Thank you from the US! Best channel I’ve ever seen for teaching stick. With your videos I’ve gone from never setting foot in a manual vehicle to daily driving one in a week.
Driven a manual since I got my licence in 2000. My dad did his best teaching me but definitely lots of by feel strategies were taught to me. So I am really enjoying these videos, so much clarity now ha! And I'm still learning alot! Thanks Richard😊
I passed my test in 2019 and got taught the handbrake way to set off. I'm now driving for the first time since in my husbands car and finding that his car doesn't do well on that and having to learn to do it without it and I panic when the car starts to roll. I also find the bite point first before the gas and learning that the car doesn't do well on that either so having to learn to do gas before clutch. It's proving very difficult but after finding your playlist on clutch control things make more sense now than they ever did. Thank you! 😊
Great video! I accidentally got into a bad habit of letting up the clutch first when I was just practicing in the driveway as its easier to control the car that way for a beginner, but in the real world its way better to build up revs with the gas first and then ease up the clutch. Trying to navigate a busy roundabout using the clucth first method would be a disaster!
I'v been driving motorcycles for 10 years, and used to drive my dad's Ford 150 which was a pretty easy clutch control. I just bought a 07 Mustang Gt and I'm finding the clutch control moving from stop through 1st more difficult. Your videos are so so helpful my friend. From Houston Tx.
I'm a learner driver and I've had no problems with clutch control until I strated with driving school; I'd only been driving older cars where gas was necessary to get moving every time, and now I was driving a diesel with a more "touchy" clutch. This helped me with what to think about and I'd like to thank your simple way of explaining things!
Hello my brother, my name is John from namibia I have learner's license and always I like to watching your videos and now I learn more about you, keep it up thanks so much 🙏💪
Thank you so much for this playlist, I've saved so much money since I can actually focus on driving during my lessons rather than having things shown to me and explained constantly!
Your videos are so helpful and make me feel a lot more confident about clutch control and other basics that sometimes aren't explained that well in actual driving lessons. Thanks for taking the time to make them!
Many very useful info here again, thanks a lot 👍 From the time I use your method when braking (first brake, keep looking at revs and when below 1000, push the clutch down), my stopping improved massively - from very harsh to very smooth, so thank you sooooo much for all that knowledge you're sharing with us 👍
I've had this question about breaking for a while now. I finally found someone who answered all my answers concerning the topic. Thank you so much. I just subscribed since I am a new learner for manual cars, I will be using your videos and tips for reference
Thanks richard, this topic was driving me crazy (pun intended)as my instructor would tell me one thing and youtube would tell me another. But eventually I tried all methods and found out that gas and then clutch is the best way and feels more natural to me.
Only exception is on a hill. If i lift the clutch up first to the bite point and then throttle, I can have minimal or no rollback at all. I hear you have to use handbrake on hills in the UK, but here in Australia, it's never taught as mandatory. I find it a hassle to use handbrake unless the hill is really steep.
my instructor 14 years ago always wanted me to use a handbrake start untill one day i kind of snapped and revved high an let the clutch out a bit quick, what was funny was he said i moved away better than before except high revs, confusion much lol, i love this guy as i havnt driven in 9 years because i was stupid an drunk drove, so this i see as a fantastic refresher if i decide to even want to get my licence back
American dude watching this. Despite being weirded out when you’re driving on the wrong side of the road this is super helpful. They only teach how to drive automatics here. Buying my first manual tomorrow.
I can tell by my 30 yrs of driving experience that u know ur stuff well because u faced them urself and hence ur a master in it.. great going and ur students will be delighted to learn from you! And of course u know these finer details because u are curious on small nuances just like how i learnt 😊 enjoy driving and teaching.. god bless you
One thing I’ve learned through my own learning of manual is that goal 1 is to be able to confidently get on the road and get where you need, whether the methods you do are “best” or not, so you can actually practice the best ways without fear. For example my first few days dailying manual, I was shifting into first and getting revs just as the cross traffic light turned yellow, so that all I had to do was get off the clutch properly. This allowed me to erase the fear of stalling, and focus on getting the timing and feel better comfortably
Very helpful videos. I have a stick shift and I find your videos the best ones on driving a stick. Your videos make a lot of common sense. Thanks for posting.
This is by far the most concise video I've seen about driving manual on RUclips. Most videos just mention about how to find the bite point then apply gas and the shift pattern. Your video explains everything about slowing down, foot positioning on the clutch, what happens if you do A, B, or C.
Your video is very helpful! I've driven close to 32000 km at this point and never learned these skills due to my former instructor literally just sitting there being vague for the most part, and the fact no one I know drives a manual doesn't help either. This is the first (of many) videos I've watched on the subject that really goes into detail on the advantages and disadvantages of each technique. Definitely subbing for this. Keep up the good work!

You've managed to explain in 1 video what he's been trying to explain for 5 weeks haha fingers are crossed this means I get it!
A brilliant video! Clear and concise - expert advice. What I particularly liked when comparing your methods to others on YT was that they spent to much time on talking theory and showing what people tend to do wrong. You focused mainly on showing how to do it properly and briefly explaining the differences between various methods. Oh, and the super short description of what's wrong when car reacts in different ways - perfect. Thank you! Good work!

Great video, thanks, I'm driving heavier car now and did have problems, lighter car was more responsive without adding much gas, now it's different, and new car has a lot more horsepower. I'll try with more gas. Thanks again, very good lesson.
In my experience, the first method (gas first then lifting the clutch) works better for weak petrol engines (say below 100hp and 110 NM of peak torque) as they don't produce much torque at low revs, while the second method (lifting the clutch first) is fine or even better for stronger petrol engines or even small diesel engines that have high torques at low revs. You also briefly mentioned it in the beginning of the video that not all engines are capable of the second method. Thanks.
Thanks you .. For your produces videos, I get a lot of experience through watching your video. Keep it up 👍👍👌👌and you can produce more and more videos. Thank you....
Love the slight sarcasm with, 'I'm going to do the handbrake start first, even though I'm not on a hill'😂 this is so true though, very necessary on a hill but definitely not on a flat. Even on some very slight inclines i find you just need more revs and then hold the clutch bite for longer. And demonstrating the differences and not just saying what is right and wrong was very helpful as i was taught to do clutch then gas for example, which doesn't work in my 1.4 petrol car, but seeing the difference makes it easier to see why it doesn't. This video was very helpful, thank you!
watching this video has just given me the answer to a question i have been asking myself for a few weeks now and that is why does my foot sometimes tend to slip up the clutch! i think its because i am attempting to keep my heel down it all makes sense now, hopefully now i know i will be able to stop doing it as i'm doing it more in the new car i'm driving and my test is next week i really don't want to have to keep adjusting it.
Another brilliant and very informative video. This answered many of the questions I had as my instructor was teaching me different methods to yourself. I now know why and can decide which is best for me. Many thanks.
Correct me if i'm wrong but at 5:18 when pushing the clutch down again, you are changing the point at which your heel touches the floor, if you keep your heel at the same point then you shouldn't face much problem, the clutch will slide up your sole again.I am learning to drive and this works fine for me.
Do whatever works for you. Keeping your heel down for big clutch movements makes most people lose their footing on the clutch pedal mensing they have to readjust their foot. By which point they lose control.
