Fantastic job, Renée, as always. 👍I remember that the first vacuum cleaner my family got was a Hoover, a small and very loud one in dark red and silverish. And I also remember tons of TV ads during that time with their slogan "Die gute Wahl - Hoover !" (The good choice- Hoover !) which was sung by some lovely female voices. Childhood memories...😊Keep it up, and have a good one ! 🖐Greets from GER, U.

Die gute Wahl! That even sounds good when you say it! I remember my grandmother always complaining about how heavy her vacuum was & that it was impossible to use on her stairs to the second floor. She was right! Carrying vacuums back then felt like you were going to the gym! You needed a separate bag for all of the different attachments too. Those were the days! Hope that your week is going well so far!

I have a vintage "sweep broom" that I purchased at an estate sale for $3 several years ago. It is a metal square with two little doors on the bottom, a bristle roller in the middle. I use that on my rugs more than my actual vacuum cleaner! It seems to pick up much more than the vacuum and so easy to dump out whatever it picks up.

You know, I never gave one thought to the dawn of the vacuum age - and when it might have been - until today. I think it's funny that they advertised wireless vacuums in the '20s & '30s. How did you think to research this topic? Was it while you were vacuuming? I am offended on behalf of Buzz that radios were not included in the $125 you needed to spend to get a free sweeper. There's a great clip elsewhere on RUclips of Mel Blanc playing.a vacuum salesman and trying to get his pitch right. I was watching a UK game show one time - also on RUclips - and they kept talking about Henry and Henry Hoovers - had to look that one up. Now the only mass-produced vacuum in the UK. Cute, too. Great ads, great music. Thanks for continuing to use your talents to bring these to us. Have a great Wednesday!

    • @PaperandMoose

I was just looking at old newspapers and saw an ad for a vacuum so wondered what type of advertising was used. Naturally no men were a part of the ad illustrations, for of course vacuuming back then was a woman's job! There were also so many ads in the classified section for used & repaired vacuum cleaners. I think most people today wouldn't be interested in buying a used vacuum cleaner unless it was an expensive brand or never used in the box and for a discounted price at a yard sale. The vacuum I have came from a house cleanout, but it's a simple one and I was able to clean it before using it. (Also helped that it didn't come from the "Hot Dog" house! Haha) I didn't see any ads for door-to-door vacuum salesmen, so that must have come along later in the sweeper craze!

I have a vintage one called "Carpet Cat" that is manual - a roller in the middle on the bottom flicks what is collected into two compartments that are emptied by opening the little tray doors on the bottom. Probably the best $3 I ever spent at an estate sale! My "electric" vacuum is a Dirt Devil :0)
