  • We talk amps, guitars, pedals, cables, and a bit of history in this rig rundown, including something that has shocked absolutely everyone I've ever told. As an almost famous 80's guitarist I get asked about my rig from back "in the day" all the time. In this video I reveal every detail, then wrap up with a rare live recording and some embarrassing photos just for the fun of it.

Incredible memories of your sound development and a brilliant insight in building the AB switch to have a clean and distorted sound! I was born in 1951 and grew up in So CA, happily I was fortunate to have and play through all the old classic guitars and amps. After all this time and endless amounts of hours trying to get the sound I dreamed of, finally purchased a Soldano Hot Rod 25 and all my dreams came true. After finding a Marshall Joe Satriani head on Reverb last week and running both amps in stereo, my soul has finally entered the heaven realms of guitar tone. Sound research stories are fascinating, and we all have different ones!

Hey, thanks for the feedback on pedals. I thought that sounded like an Electro Harmonix pedal. I had deleted all of my comments on RUclips, as I do every so often and lost the thread, but your reply still popped up in my notifications. Thanks for the reply. Great music.

I have a small Fender Princeton 112+ combo amp. I use my 20+ year old Korg AX1000-G effects processor and the only pedals I have are an original Crybaby Wah (Which I hardly ever use) and a BOSS 7 band EQ. I'm not one for learning software so I don't do the "Plug-ins" and "Patches". Of all the 100 or so different settings and effects the Korg has, I've only customized maybe 5. Who needs over a hundred anyway? Of course, being a bedroom only player, 5 is enough. Currently, I own 21 guitars (including 2 basses). With that many, you'd think I would be touring the world. lol

I had asked for you to do a rig rundown a while back. So nice to get a better understanding of what you were running those days. Brought back some great memories. Excellent video!

Thank you so much! Do you remember a club in Janesville called "The Old 95" or something similar? It was a long, narrow venue. When I got the first power attenuator we were playing there & I forgot to engage it as we were starting our 3rd set. The Marshall was so loud that it vibrated glasses & bottles off of their shelves. Luckily I caught it & flipped the switch before it did too much damage to the club, lol.

I use an attenuator with my Marshall 100w plex also...Yeah I have the two cabs W/greenbacks too but just usually bring one unless its a big stage outside and then I'd run one over two the bassist's side of the stage and he would run a smaller extension cab over on my side (it's sometimes hard to hear each other when you that far away outside) But I was curious.....Running your head hot ((way up on the master I was wondering if you tended to go through power amp tubes ( in my case EL34)? Did you ever try yanking either a pair of the two inside power amp tubes or two of the outside ones (and then set your head impedance to 8 ohms?..making it more like a 50 watt....It's still loud but at least you go through only a pair of tubes at a time....And as I remember those old powersoaks may have gotten a little hot (with dumping all that power into them ...BTW the reason some of use had a FX loop put in was if you send an echoed guitar signal into a head that was turned full up for crunch......it would typically "chop the echo sounding guitar sound up pretty bad (almost like what would happen if you went from you Echo/delay INTO a distortion box.....the sound gets all chopped up and don't sound right

I think at one point I did try the 2 tube trick. Not sure why I stopped. I did burn up a transformer at least once on this head. The guy that repaired it did something wrong & I almost got electrocuted at sound check. After I regained consciousness, we pulled the Marshall & hooked the Fender up. I took it to a different repair shop and they said I was lucky I wasn't killed because of what the other guy did. Thanks for watching!

So where did your first Gibson come from and how much did it cost you?
Why did you do all the same color?

Hey Scott! Thanks for the questions! That first one, the SG junior came from a music store in Rockford called Koster's Guitar Center, on 7th Street. I believe the price tag said $189, but I traded another guitar and maybe an amp in on it, so I can't really recall exactly how much cash I parted with to get the guitar. It seemed like a good deal at the time, lol. The junior is considered to be cherry in color, while the Deluxe is more of a walnut. I liked the cherry color I had seen pictures of Pete Townsend, Robby Krieger (The Doors), and Frank Zappa all playing cherry SGs, and thought they looked cool. With the Deluxe I didn't have any choice, since I bought it from a friend and that walnut finish may have been all that was available when he bought it. He wanted some other guitar, and still owed $175 on the SG. I paid him $225 for it, in installments (!) since I was basically a broke kid, and that allowed him to keep on top of the payments. The RD is almost the exact same color, and it came from Guzzardo's in Rockford. I'm pretty certain it was the only one they had, and I really liked the sound so I jumped on it. I think that one set me back around $500, maybe.
