Live Performance: Mr. In a Hurry, part 2
Some serious guitar shredding, heavy boogie, hard rock, metal boogie kind of thing! A battle between the bassist & guitarist! Audience minds blown! All on borrowed backline & borrowed drums, with only THREE rehearsals! Kudos to Darren Moon on bass & Joel Baer on drums!
Apologies for the many blurry shots - the light show & the cameras were not getting along.

Getting ready to hit some stages with the new band line-up, and the pedalboard needs to get smaller! My Bad Horsie 2 sounds great, but it is enormous! Will the Morley 20/20 version fit the bill? What you heard regarding "tone is in the hands" was an experienced player vs an average one going through thr same equipment so tone was the same, but expertise, technique was not, which mentally makes us believe that tone is in the hands, but it is not.

I recently found Glen's videos and I've learned a lot. The guy is funny, knowledgeable, and very dedicated to his craft. I really don't understand all the people who get bent out of shape about what he says when mostly what he does is debunk the myths and marketing hype. I guess some people can't handle the truth and take themselves way too seriously: it's easier to be offended than to think objectively.

sorry this will be long, but I have a lot to relate to get my point across. and show that I know what the truth really is in this... I do things myself for the most part... here we go.... tone is in the whole signal chain including the hands , the guitar and the rest of the signal chain uou use from you through the cables ant pedals the amp and the speakers all combine to make the sounds we call tone.. even so called 'tone wood' has an effect but not as much as some say that it does.. tone wood is a thing but not so much just adding to the over all tone you get when added to the rest of the signal chain.. meaning all of the things you use to get the sounds you want ..Hopefully you get wht you have in your hewad out through your total rig. I agree with Glen because he tells us the truth at a sound engineer for so many years he knows how to adjust thee controls to get the tones that sound right for any particular recode he is m ixing during recording and producing a record.. noit I single aaspect but the whole process from hands instrument and the rest of the process... thats what folks fail to realize. that .. At 65 I'm a child of the '60's and like it loud and proud. but Im smart enough to know the diferences in effect and single aspect of the signal chin has some effect but not as much and "they" claim it does advertising has skewed our perception of what certain equipment really does... I use to salvage discarded streo and TV consoles when they were thrown out because they " don't work" sometimes a simple blown fuse was the reason it didn't work.. an easy fix or a blown speaker was the reason.. O took wjat still worked and made cabs for some components to use in my rig which was all salvages parts I used discarded kitchen cabinets for speakers using mix and matched speakers to get even tone from side to size regardless of size or shape.. custom baffle plates to mount the speakers in and wiring them to impedence match the amp part of the ste up I made. all this was when i was about 10 to 12 yrs ld and I buitt bicycles the same way.. from discarded frames and other kike parts to make a daily rider and other bikes for different things... cost next to nothing but some new parts neded lint tubes and tired sometimes.. and the odd cusyom part i bartered my time and labor to get from friends and/r relatives shops. I did what I had to to get what I wanted. likt making my amp perform differently. through adjustments and adding mods or hooking up to other equipment. play with the settings to get a desired sound... with my current rig I get great tones from the guitar i built and the amp as well. More toys to come to add to what I have.... taking the time to make what I want for myself.. guitars in a collection I built.. Literally,, myself that aiai can be proud fo making myself. the way I want them to be.. Wanna Play???

As a professional sound guy, the difference you noted at the MSG gig, is easily explainable. The guitar and amp is set at sound check (before the doors open), the stage guy will come on before the band comes on stage, and make sure everything is working, turn it on, plug it in, make sure batteries are fresh or pedal power supplies are connected, does it make a sound ?, yes - no problem, let’s go for it, so he does not need to crank the guitar to full volume, that has already been done earlier in the day. Cranking it to full grunt will only draw unnecessary attention to the stage before everyone is ready,

  • @DarthPew

IMO, guitarists are the sub group of musicians who have the most difficulty (as a whole) understanding that a tone is different than the music. Music is the composition, the note choices made over the harmony, techniques used, the arrangement and other compositional elements combined. Tone is the algamation of signal modifications, the most important of which is the speaker, and in the case of recordings, the mic choice and placement with the choice of speaker. The one thing guitarists all over the globe have to do, in my opinion of course, is if they want to improve on sounding like their heroes, is to study their note choices above their gear.

Not gonna lie i thought i was clicked baited at first. But i totally agree with glen and your clarification. I held a lot of guitars, from cheap to expensive. Alss the difference is just feel and weight. For me id rather use my squier mustang on long gigs than the heavy telecaster. All stock pickups. A set action up almost identical but the neck on telecaster is too thick for me so its more tiring to use in long sets so id rather use the one i can relax while playing.

Well...Glenn does say on EVERY EPISODE his comments reflect a heavy distorted metal sound....IN A MIX. He freely admits to tone shifts if you're sitting alone in a room. Also. I just put a Chapman double coil into my LP copy at the bridge. Sounds pretty much the exact same as the single coil, but now I have more sustain, and clarity on squeals and tapping. Glenn just likes to save the shiny people money.....with some sarcasm and pokes at our egos.

"Hear me out, listen to everything I say." That's one of the points where it all breaks down. People hardly ever do. As Glenn says almost every single time is that his video's are for high gain metal recording. Not for clean sounds, not for playing at home or even for an audience, not for jazz / country / pop etc. And that's exactly what you just confirmed. I'm glad to see that the comments on this video are pretty positive, and most with experience seem to confirm the same. I look at it from the view of an electronics engineer, and I really learned a LOT from the experiments Glenn does. Theoretically claims for and against can be made. The only way to really know is to try and measure. That's what he does. Thanks for clearing this up ;)

Sounds silly but I have a reason I have been searching for a tuner that displays the octave number with the note, not string number. I'm always unstringing my VI, sometimes I want to move quick, might have my ears plugged, also I want to train my ears and use it on different sounds, just seeing E1, A5 etc. Anyway I can't find out if any have that without testing. I've bought 3 handhelds that fooled me with description and pictures. Always just string number in the different modes. Just full chromatic scale with octave number and note, preferably with frequency listed.

Great video! I dont play metal. First and foremost, is if you are happy with how your guitar sits with you. Neck profile, body shape, how reactive are your pots and so on. Second on the list are your speakers. If you have a mic going to house people only hear the PA and the sound engineers ability. So, you can have great tone, but the mixer and the PA, will determine your sound. Which, as you know can be frustrating. I can go on, but I'm old and just thought I'd give my 2 cents. Thanks again

Any engineer worth their salt would tell you that Jim Lill’s “neckless” guitar is anything but that. It actually has two necks in the form of the boards that run between the two benches. If one of the functions of a guitar neck is to maintain the distance between the nut and the bridge under string tension (and it certainly is), then Jim’s guitar has two necks. If, as Jim and others claim, only the bridge, strings, pickup and the nut will affect tone, then Jim has failed to prove anything because he has introduced a fifth element into the mix without realizing it. Very unscientific. Jim can keep making his videos and there will always be a certain number of people who will be enthralled because they haven’t thought things through. Here’s another thing that a lot of people haven’t considered: If wood and construction methods had nothing to do with tone then clip-on tuners wouldn’t work on solidbody guitars.

    • @ClarkColborn
      @ClarkColborn Месяц назад

I think what Jim & others are saying is that tone - that is to say, the frequency response - is only affected minimally by the type of wood, so minimally as to be negligible. And I'm not even sure Jim suggests that; I think he does his experiments and asks the viewer to draw their own conclusions, for the most part. I could be wrong. In any event, serious question for you: how would YOU perform an experiment to determine how much tone comes from any given component? It has to be measurable, and repeatable. I have ideas, but they are beyond my time & budget constraints, so I would honestly be interested in seeing & hearing how others would test this. Thanks for watching & commenting!

Hi Clark. I'm just a hobby player and I haven't had a lot of different equipment. I have mostly budget guitars and I've change some pickups etc. but mostly I wish I hadn't. I've had 4 or 5 different small combo amps and were never really happy with the way they sounded. About 10 years ago I was given a 50 watt Yorkville keyboard amp . It's a very simple solid state amp but it's a closed back cab and uses a 10" woofer and a tweeter. So, much like a stereo speaker, it has a high fidelity sound. And it handles my Boss ME 50 quite well and sounds great. To me. I'll keep using it until one of us croaks.

  • @robvee532

I like Glen and he's not wrong.....most of the time. I am also a touring guitar player (I've played all over the world) and I have my own tricks to sounding like me anywhere I go on any amp I use. 9 times out of 10 if you play out, it'll sound like crap anyways so concentrate on your playing and your band. Sound checks are ok but useless most of the time because when you dial everything in when the club is empty it will be wayyyy different when you have a lot people come in after. The trick is, don't be so f-in picky because no one cares but you, deal with what you have (and buy a decent compressor). 2nd, look cool and confident and DON't tinker constantly on stage (deal with it and just play), it looks like amateur hour when you constantly fiddle with your gear, keep all of that on the down low. Most of the cheaper guitars and amps these days are pretty damn good compared to the cheap crap from the 80's - 90's. I just bought a Chinese made Gretsch and other than a few things that I "prefer" (tuners and bridge saddles) everything including the pickups included were great and no need to be changed out. Its funner to practice and hear yourself get better than tinker with gear. I have a ton of gear and I dial them in to all pretty much sound the same so i can use it all play to play with the bands that I play with. Develop your own tone and keep with that, no one wants to see and hear you tinkering with your gear at practice or playing live.

Between hauling anhydrous ammonia & propane & being way too busy & had to pour myself into my job when it got cold, heck I didn't know whether I was going or coming & I had to leave the band because I began working probably 100+ hours a week even though my logbook said 70 hours. That's why I laid the guitar down 30 years ago because I was stupid busy with life... I digress, sorry. I'm retired now & with the way our world is I'm hankering to write some good old time protest songs, 10-4? 😆 I've got the time. I'm a nice guy but I don't mind getting into some trouble. "Freedom Ain't Free" Freedom is like a garden. Work = Beauty, but weeds will pop up & Must Be removed. ⭐Note: Thanks for doing this build. It will be very valuable. I also honestly don't know anything about a Klon because most of everything I ever did was massive gain, a big muff, Bad Horsie, & I don't know how but I acquired a flanger & I enjoyed using that a lot & still have it. I've got too much stuff 😳. I digress, sorry. Too long, sorry. I'll be watching because I've got a good idea how to use the Klon clone but I'm watching everybody else. Thanks man. I never would have fallen in love with quartz & agate picks if a salesman hadn't showed me (told me I needed to use...) a weird thing I knew nothing about. What I'm saying is, I'm watching now that I'm brushing off the dust & basically restarting my creative music journey. 😵Later

@@jerryhayden8720 Congrats on your return to guitar! I understand life getting crazy busy - I've been there myself. Luckily, I managed to ride it out, and plan to just keep on keepin' on. 🙂 Good luck on your musical journey!

I think the first video of yours I have seen (its YT I'm never sure lol), Nice to see someone talking straight about Jim's vids. Most of the replies/reactions I have seen have one thing in common, they all seem to think Jim made conclusions when he ends with 'What do you think?' These seem (to me at least) people who have come to conclusions themselves that they arn't happy with. It's like I'm sorry your conclusion makes you feel you've pointlessly spent a few grand more than you needed too on a guitar because you believed Paul 'watch me hit a piece of wood with a mallet' Reed 'Its costing you three grand more because I've done this pointless action' Smith when he told you there was this stuff called tone wood. I find it funny that none of their arguments have changed, its still 'This is tone wood, PRS told me its better and their guitars are expensive so they must be right'

Oh man, are you ever spot on! I think Jim does an awesome job, and most importantly, he provides information that the open-minded among us will find truly useful. Thanks for watching & for commenting!

Thank you for this video Clark! Why is it that no one has built a really decent bandmate-finding website? It really baffles me that we still have these poorly designed websites with outdated functionality. Is it too complicated to build, or is it too hard to make money owning/operating the website? Please comment if you have any idea. Thanks!

I'm so glad you found this video useful! As I mentioned in the video (I think), BandMix seems to have the best interface, but they provide zero guidelines to their user base on best practices, and this results in an enormous waste time. Of course, their site could also use a major overhaul. Over the years my best luck, oddly enough, has been Craigslist. Lots of wasted time from respondents there, as well, but that is probably just because so many musicians are flakes, lol! My new bassist came via Craigslist, and I had another one who found me there as well a few years back. He was a great player & cool dude, but family commitments eventually led to his departure. If I had the coding chops or the $$ to hire someone, I would take a shot at building a great site for finding bandmates! Alas, my hands are full with my band, but who knows, maybe someone will see this & build a better site! Thanks for watching & for your comment!

8:37 Tone vs. sound in the hands: I'm not sure such a distinction can be made. And yet 10:55 "By 'sound' *I mean the tone* & any other distinct qualities a particular guitar may have." So tone and sound are separate things in the hands, but not when it comes to a guitar? The way "sound" is used with the hands might be better put as technique or style, I would argue. It's the thing a player can control that makes them unique. A hybrid picker isn't going to sound like an alternate picker or a sweeper or a legato player. Tone has to come from the hands and this tone is what makes part of the sound. That's why Jeff Beck doesn't sound like Paul Gilbert. They get differing tones/sounds by using different techniques and styles--in this case fingers vs. alternate picking--things inseparable from the hands. So, technique/style + tone from technique and gear = sound. If anything is to be learned from all this it is: 1) Gear is a matter of personal taste, experimentation, experience, knowledge of how best to use it, and budget. 2) Some variables in a guitar signal chain have more impact than others. 3) Which of these variables has the most impact is subjective based on #1. Some variables in the chain can be compensated for by other variables (ex: a high gain amp/boost/pedal can compensate for lower output pickups). 4) Most players would be better served by learning how to better use the gear they have than buying more gear, especially new gear. 5) Most importantly, *spending a lot of money on gear produces diminishing returns in high gain situations.* And yet many players know this yet still acquire massive amounts of gear because it produces a feeling of satisfaction to "have it all," or at least all of what one likes. *The problem with #1-5 is RUclips influencer business models often depend upon getting viewers to spend money on products and services, either directly or indirectly.* ("I'm not sponsored by Marshall, but, for an inexpensive alternative to the real thing, check out my Marshall cabinet impulse responses in the video description below.") This business model produces a huge conflict of interest on the part of content creators as far as objectivity and transparency. When it comes to modern RUclips influencers, viewers are essentially watching what used to be called infomercials. As for the viewer, unless one is absolutely convinced that what an influencer is peddling matters, it's best to watch for knowledge, ignore the stuff being sold, and let the influencer make money off of ads. Depending upon the skill of the influencer and the production quality of the video, separating the knowledge from the product/service pitch can be difficult. I do my best to avoid getting sucked into the content creator ecosystem. After nearly 20 years, I only use subscriptions as bookmarks to channels and have only two--one to Euge Valovirta and the other to Ben Higgins--so I can find their content quickly--content that sells me minimal things. The rest of the time I rarely like, subscribe, or comment, because I don't want to be sucked into the echo chamber of the RUclips algorithm where I get mostly the same videos suggested to me every day. Logging onto RUclips without signing into one's account is a good way to get out of the unrealized pattern of what one usually watches. However, I did like and comment on this video because I felt it presented good information. Thanks so much.

Fricker makes a lot of good points, very valuable for new players so don't have to buy the way through all the stuff to reach the same conclusions. Now if you really wants to alter tone, a Boss GE-7 is a great start ....

Thanks for watching & commenting. Yeah, the GE-7 is super useful. I talk about my MXR 10 band EQ being my "secret weapon" in one of my other videos. With that thing I could sculpt almost any tube amp into a very usable sound, it was amazing!
