American Greed is the millions of fraudulent claims filed each year. Insurance companies aren't there to replace things like roofs that are regular maintenance. If you don't replace your roof do not expect the insurance company to. Only during a significant weather even are they liable or something not related to simply having a worn out roof. They should have a clause that automatically disqualifies coverage for any roof approaching 15-20 years unless signed off by a professional as to its worthiness. When something catastrophic happens you are covered. This is how insurance is supposed to work.

The kicker is, they actually should be increasing their coverage because of the price of wood and construction supplies these days. It's going to cost much more now to rebuild your home and your old policy might not cover the cost anymore.

I owned a southern California insurance agency for many years. Left the state for Arkansas in 2004 and VERY glad that I did. insurance rate increases must be approved by each state's Insurance Commission. Florida insurance companies have been losing money for years and many have gone bankrupt trying to stay in that state. If you don't like the rates, move! You are not a tree.

Go there and be happy, don't sit around somewhere you're unhappy and complain all day. There isn't much that's cheaper. As out-of-state residents move in, prices have dramatically increased. $500K home not that long ago was extravagant. Now that's the price for a normal home in many areas. Maybe he could move, but to where. Small homes are being bought up to turn into rentals. Renting itself is a bad option with rapid, unpredictable rent hikes. For many, staying put is the best option.
