Thanks a lot for the video ! This tips are really helpful. However, most key decision makers, people who are really high up in the organization, are not very active on Linkedin. Then how would you establish a connection with them ? Is there a way to get their attention via email, especially when they are used to having lots of people contacting them ? Most people tend to ignore emails when they are busy.

To answer your question: Since I’m shy and introverted (two beautiful combinations :)), my strategy in being visible in social networking is to be early. If it’s a physical event, I go early. If it’s a virtual meeting, I connect early. I’m not someone who can make herself visible in the crowd, and I shrink when I see too many people and a noisy room. The more I see space and few people who can pay attention to each other; they can see who just came, they can approach me and welcome me first; that makes me feel relaxed, comfortable, and stay engaged. That works well for me, and I hope that could be helpful to someone else :)
that's actually a GREAT tip Yasmine! Because if you're early you can "control" the environment a bit more. Fewer people are there and you're able to really focus on a topic or two at a time. Thanks for sharing!

Yes, totally agree with your point! I personaly experience that my confidence comes from a self awareness, a self awareness comes from observing yourself. Focused on having the right people in your circle that could help you together reach the best potential yet still you in any ways. 🤓
Can't agree more! Self awareness is literally the start to knowing how best to navigate networking given our introverted personalities. And yes, our close circle of friends often serve as a launching pad onto exciting opportunities (be it in business or in life!)

I (Elisa) totally agree with you, as I am a natural born introvert. The point is, here in Italy, people are pretty open and extrovert and pretend you to be the same. They read your introvertness like weakness or "you are not really interested in this or that" and do not really consider the effort we make to create connection. That is why I chose to work remotly: I do need time before an actual meeting in person, to feel "afe" and confident enough not to run away or get caught by a panic attack. Can't agree more! As an introvert, I found that socializing/networking with a goal is more comfortable than simply 'hang out' with people. I guess being more target-oriented also alleviates that stress.
Thanks for the tips! The whole introvert problem seems to stem from the energy drain of having to find common ground with people, while talking about "the weather". It is much easier to discuss what one is passionate about, so that end quote makes a lot of sense!
Jeff, I've been binge-watching your videos for the last 90 minutes, I wanna go to bed but I can't stop watching! I'm actually confused about my place on the introvert-extrovert spectrum after watching this video. I dread socializing, whether it's with new people, colleagues, and this may sound ridiculous but I would even try to push a phone call to my best friends or a visit to my relatives as much as possible and come up with the most creative excuses for not doing so. It drives my wife crazy because she survives on human interaction and she keeps nagging me to call people and meet up. So far, extreme introvert right? The funny thing is that once I'm in the social situation whether it's a phone call, a small gathering of friends, a company event, or networking event, I become a ravenous social animal! I would crack jokes, tell stories, be highly engaging and get this: I would actually leave having genuinely enjoyed myself! :D Sorry for the rant and I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to make all these videos and to provide such varied, useful and entertaining content. Although I have no scientific information to back this up: I believe it's because people like us (I'm similar to you in a way and that's why others would confuse us for being huge extroverts, since they only see that side of us), end up making the best of the situation we genuinely enjoy ourselves if it's a social event we find fun and exciting! Thanks as always, Jeff! I was really looking forward to (and needed) this video! And in answer to your question, I usually try to network with someone new at least once every one or two weeks to avoid draining too much energy. I would always prepare some questions beforehand based on what I found on their LinkedIn profile (just to give myself peace of mind) and, before the day of the call or in-person meeting, I’d make sure I have the day off and to myself so that my social battery is fully charged by the time I talk to them :3 As an introvert, I’d say the following-up part after the initial meeting is probably the easiest because it’s behind a screen like you had mentioned 😊 It gives us time to carefully write out a response and find a thoughtful way to add value which definitely plays to our strengths as an introvert!

Hi Tianyi! We definitely shouldn't feel like "acting" since that's a clear sign that we're not being ourselves :). Trust me, I've been there. It was very hard for me to carry a "fake" smile for 2-3 hours at a time. Hope you feel more confident after watching this video though? :)

Hi Phoebe! That's a great idea! Will definitely consider that moving forward. Right off the top of my mind though I don't think there are (or should be) introverted tactics for personal vs. business. That seems to suggest we have to act a certain way in different situations, while in all honesty we should embrace our introverted nature and leverage it in all scenarios :)

It's not great if we have to be "fake" during these interactions since that may not be the most accurate representation of who we truly are (don't get me wrong though, there are genuine extroverts out there and I'm jealous haha) but I do hope you feel more confident/comfortable after watching this video :)
I'm a bit introverted, yes. And I don't understand social interactions and they feel awkward to me. Your videos are really helpful. I already learned from my last informational interview that I may be mis-selling my experience (unintentionally whilst aiming for brevity). They said my application was "interesting", though. Which I was glad to hear. I really should have asked what was interesting. (I did spend a lot of time on the application)

As an introvert, thinking about talking with other people makes me anxious and insecure, but this (and other videos of yours) makes me feel like I can actually achieve/do something. The question is: how to be an introvert and still work with people. You work with people, right? How you survive at the end of the day? For me, it's very hard to communicate with many people during the day, then with my partner and have some energy for my friends. Usually, I'm so drained that I'm dreaming about running to the forest 😅
Very nice video, thank you. While not an introvert, per se, i behave like one because in my experience most everyone has proven themselves incredible. For example, the folks at the last company i work for who are the most active on LinkedIn, practicing what you mention here, post thoughts, content and sentiment that diametrically oppose their real life work habits. During the day, they avoid responsibility, waste team's time and belittle other's efforts. Then on LinkedIn, piggyback on positive sentiments from others about valuing employees, leading by examples and other popular simple management practices. No way I have the energy to seek out, follow and capitalize on such hypocrisy with yet more facade. And for the hiring managers and recruiters, well, i've worked in and along folks in this space as well. Everyone from the intern (who are shockingly often saddled with vetting applicants), Recruiters (i.e.salesperson), Hiring Managers (with no authority often subject to resource limitations and scrutiny from THEIR manager who is many times dysfuntional and incompetently preocupied with competing on trivial matters), HR VPs (who are caught in the middle despite holding a title of VP) and Csuite (typically Type A narcissists with gold-fish attention spans, ALSO competing with EVERYONE over trivial matters) so really hard to see the value in searching for such characters even though they are easily accessible. I'd really like to believe this is just my opinion from 1 or 2 bad company's examples but this is from multiple companies, micro (less than 10) and large (1000+), throughout the US over the last 20+years in a multitude of industries. Anyone with diverse exposure and background for more than 10 years experience nothing like this? Holla atcha boi!

And in answer to your question, I usually try to network with someone new at least once every one or two weeks to avoid draining too much energy. I would always prepare some questions beforehand based on what I found on their LinkedIn profile (just to give myself peace of mind) and, before the day of the call or in-person meeting, I’d make sure I have the day off and to myself so that my social battery is fully charged by the time I talk to them :3
As an introvert, I’d say the following-up part after the initial meeting is probably the easiest because it’s behind a screen like you had mentioned 😊 It gives us time to carefully write out a response and find a thoughtful way to add value which definitely plays to our strengths as an introvert!

Hmm, I’d say for every hour of socializing, I will need at least one or two hours of solitude to get over the “hangover” and to just mentally dissect the whole thing 😆 What does the drain to recharge ratio look like for you, Jeff? Hi Tianyi! We definitely shouldn't feel like "acting" since that's a clear sign that we're not being ourselves :). Trust me, I've been there. It was very hard for me to carry a "fake" smile for 2-3 hours at a time. Hope you feel more confident after watching this video though? :)

Can you consider posting a video for introverts who are in client-facing roles?😂 I am always super anxious and feel awkward when I need to do small talks with clients. I can deliver stuff well, but it would be great to establish a better client relationship in a more personal way
Hi Phoebe! That's a great idea! Will definitely consider that moving forward. Right off the top of my mind though I don't think there are (or should be) introverted tactics for personal vs. business. That seems to suggest we have to act a certain way in different situations, while in all honesty we should embrace our introverted nature and leverage it in all scenarios :)

Yes! It's not great if we have to be "fake" during these interactions since that may not be the most accurate representation of who we truly are (don't get me wrong though, there are genuine extroverts out there and I'm jealous haha) but I do hope you feel more confident/comfortable after watching this video :)
I'm a bit introverted, yes. And I don't understand social interactions and they feel awkward to me.
Your videos are really helpful. I already learned from my last informational interview that I may be mis-selling my experience (unintentionally whilst aiming for brevity).
They said my application was "interesting", though. Which I was glad to hear. I really should have asked what was interesting. (I did spend a lot of time on the application)

Hi Kai Weng! Yes I do - If you go to my "Advanced LinkedIn Tips" video you can see a trick to narrow down your search to ONLY people you care about working in the companies you're interested in. It's super cool. By the way I think I'm like ~90% introvert on the Myer Briggs haha.

Hi, Jeff! Your advices definitely open up my thoughts about networking. As an introvert, thinking about talking with other people makes me anxious and insecure, but this (and other videos of yours) makes me feel like I can actually achieve/do something. I want to ask, would you recommend commenting/liking several previous posts at once to build a rapport with the other person? Would that be too spammy? Or do you recommend interacting with new posts instead?

As a fellow introvert and active job seeker, I find it difficult to decide if I should reach out for a referral during a call (depending on the vibe, role, personality of the other person, etc.), often overthinking whether doing so might harm the relationship I have built. The question is: how to be an introvert and still work with people. You work with people, right? How you survive at the end of the day? For me, it's very hard to communicate with many people during the day, then with my partner and have some energy for my friends. Usually, I'm so drained that I'm dreaming about running to the forest 😅

Very nice video, thank you. While not an introvert, per se, i behave like one because in my experience most everyone has proven themselves incredible. For example, the folks at the last company i work for who are the most active on LinkedIn, practicing what you mention here, post thoughts, content and sentiment that diametrically oppose their real life work habits. During the day, they avoid responsibility, waste team's time and belittle other's efforts. Then on LinkedIn, piggyback on positive sentiments from others about valuing employees, leading by examples and other popular simple management practices. No way I have the energy to seek out, follow and capitalize on such hypocrisy with yet more facade. And for the hiring managers and recruiters, well, i've worked in and along folks in this space as well. Everyone from the intern (who are shockingly often saddled with vetting applicants), Recruiters (i.e.salesperson), Hiring Managers (with no authority often subject to resource limitations and scrutiny from THEIR manager who is many times dysfuntional and incompetently preocupied with competing on trivial matters), HR VPs (who are caught in the middle despite holding a title of VP) and Csuite (typically Type A narcissists with gold-fish attention spans, ALSO competing with EVERYONE over trivial matters) so really hard to see the value in searching for such characters even though they are easily accessible. I'd really like to believe this is just my opinion from 1 or 2 bad company's examples but this is from multiple companies, micro (less than 10) and large (1000+), throughout the US over the last 20+years in a multitude of industries. Anyone with diverse exposure and background for more than 10 years experience nothing like this? Holla atcha boi!
