I think I heard this back in the day when Peter Paul and Mary had a version out. Never again until Voiceplay pulled it back out. Love their version. Omar has a great voice, blends so well with the rest of the crew!

I'd heard this song before VoicePlay, but didn't love it until they covered it. This is one of my favorite songs to sing along with. Thanks for the reaction, enjoyed it!

Reading between the lines, he robs Captain Farrell, brings the loot back to Molly, whom he says ended up tricking him, gets drunk on whiskey, and while he's out of it, conveniently Captain Farrell bursts in. Perhaps that trickster Molly had something to do with the timing of the captain's visit? Anyway, he fires both pistols (both barrels of two single-shot muzzle loaded pistols), shooting and probably killing Farrell, ending up in prison for his troubles. Meanwhile, Molly's left alone with the bag of money, and a story for the authorities where she most likely leaves out any reference to it.
Metallica's video singing this back in the day (1998) is worth a look. It's not depicting anything about the song, it's just a random 90s house party that gets a bit out of hand. But it goes to show the universal appeal of the traditional lyrics and tune, that it could be such an effective soundtrack for such 'youthful hijinks'. 'WitJ' was first made popular (in recent memory, anyway) by the Dubliners in 1967, then by Thin Lizzy in 1973.

There are many people more educated about this than I am. This song was apparently originally written in Ireland back in the 1600s. This has been sung by the Dubliners, Thin Lizzy, and many others. You're pretty close in your analysis of the plot. IMHO The star of the show robbed an Army Captain of probably his troops wages and was going to share it with his GF Molly (different name in the original song). But, since she was also seeing the Captain "in her chambers" (I thought a probable brothel/bar room), he ended up shooting him because his GF probably told her Captain beau when to show up and to maybe get his money back. Unfortunately for the Captain, the pirate decided to shoot him with both barrels for many reasons. But, she turned the pirate in to the police because the pirate ended up in jail. So, because of the drinking in the bar, I believe the latter activity happened in a saloon with bed chambers upstairs; like in many westerns. Again, this is just my thoughts.

IT goes back to the mid 1600's. Whack for my daddio means fill my glass. Remember that the Irish and English were deep in an 800 yr war and not getting along well. The Irish highwayman who stole Captain Farrell's money was considered fair game since the English were raiding the Irish.
