"Whiskey In The Jar" is a Traditional Irish song that has been covered hundreds of times, most notably by Thin Lizzy, Metallica, and The Dubliners. As far as we can tell "mush-a-rain-dum-a-doo-dum-a-dah" is the most fun lyric we've ever gotten to sing in the history of ever. Thanks for watching!

If you're not stirring your jar of whiskey with a carrot you're doing it wrong. 🥃🥕
I’m on it 😅
THIS SOUNDS LIKE A GEOFF REPLY!!!
🤣
Fact
This song in the mid century 17th, and we still trying to get original of this? This is best song that I ever heard moment.
Not a single mailman among those incredible people but they always deliver everything that we need🤩

James Joyce once said “The light music of whiskey falling into a glass- an agreeable interlude.” Now we know what it sounds like when VoicePlay pours it into a jar!
How are you posting 10 hours before the premiere 😨

This is probably the most unique cover that I’ve heard from Voiceplay. I had not even heard of this song before, so after my first listen to this I went as listened to three other versions. This version uses the Thin Lizzy and Metallica versions as the lyrical base, but the vocals and the melody are a thing of their own. Eli, Omar, and Cesar sound so good individually and together. Geoff’s solo and baseline make for an amazing contrast to the tenors. And of course Layne’s stellar vocal percussion serve as the backdrop to all of it.
Look up The Smothers Brothers version. And that was back around 1970😅😅😅😅
I did a Google search & from what I can tell is that the lyrical base of this song was actually done by a group called Sweet Pea. They wrote the song & I believe they were the first to record it. Their recording is super slow so I had to speed it up a notch.
@@marshayoung9387Try again. The lyrics are substantially unchanged from the version I heard from my aunt Mamie back in the 1950's. The story goes back to Cromwell's for occupation of Ireland
This Song is nearly 200 hundred years old, its about a man called Patrick Fleming who was a highway man and he was hung in 1650, this a traditional Irish song, also known as a rebel song, I was raised on this type of music, I am living in Cork Ireland, Check out The Dubliners version, its the real traditional version
My favorite is by Celtic Thunder. This is very good too though.
Geoff did not just sing a F1!?!?!?...Peter Barber is going to lose his mind😂
My thoughts exactly!!
If he has not already! Geoff has such an amazing range
Bruv he can sing b0
@@thefuncoder9715 my comment had more to do with him doing it in modal/chest voice...but I guess I should have been specific
@@thefuncoder9715 in subharmonics... but F1 is his new lowest chest note.
I'm a bass player, how I miss bass voices these days... WAW, beautiful!
Shout out to Ed doing a great job on the mix. I can hear everyone evenly. A lot times the bass isn't heard without headphones. Great job. This is mixed properly.
🥃
Whoa, guys! What am I supposed to focus on here?! Geoff's soul-shaking bass? Eli's killer rock? Omar's crystal clear runs? Cesar's luscious tone? Or Layne's super clean beatboxing? My brain is overloaded. 🤯
Honestly...you guys could sing the dictionary and I'd be here for it. Freakin love this!!!!!
I have heard this done a million times before but never like this... love it thanks
I was not prepared for this when the tab started playing music and Geoff caught me so off guard. But Omar at 2:08 took my breath away, those high runs, no words. I haven't heard this song before but it's incredible.
Thick F1 in chest like it’s no big deal… geez. Geoff is out of control.
Great arrangement guys! Already a catchy song, but I really enjoyed this take on it! Y’all never disappoint!
Simultaneous reactions over here of "Wow, that's good" and "What in the world is this?" Not at all what I expected, but not disappointed, either.
I’ve been listening to Geoff’s music. That’s how I found out about Voice Play. Love all that I listened to so far. Love your version of Whiskey In A Jar. Also love Metallica’s version. So now, whatever mood I’m in, I can listen to that song. I wonder if it’s the Irish in me. ❤️❤️🙏🙏
I have no words, that was so amazing. Geoff your voice is more than heaven 💯👍💫
One thing I love about VoicePlay is the way they approach storytelling in all their videos. Goes for Geoff's solo channel too.
Very great I’m Scottish and Irish heritage and I like this song
凄ーい!!皆、それぞれ特徴的な声してるのに、重なりあって素晴らしいハーモニーを奏でてる。このグループ好きだなぁ。
Is there anything that you guys CAN'T turn into PURE GOLD????
NOPE!! 😊❤🥰💥
I have the Metallica version of this one, and I like how it really just rolls along with Hetfield's growl. This one is just so smooth and the vocals are dynamite and fit beautifully. Same song, but so, so different - one of the things I love about covers when they're done well and you always hit them out of the park.
I was trying to think of my wording regarding these 2 versions & your comment sums up my thoughts too
I introduced a good karaoke friend of mine to y'all tonight via this song. I think it is safe to say y'all have a new fan. And the cover of Black Hole Sun was awesome
Geoff's backing humming sounds like an *actual* bass guitar, goodness
I am a celtic music snob. This SO delivers! Thank you Gentlemen. ❤
A favorite whenever I go to Renaissance Faires. Very excited to see VoicePlay spin the bottle of whiskey.
I have listened to this several times and love it more each time. The harmonies, the blend, the runs, the dynamics, simply everything about this is amazing. I don't understand some of the naysayers on this one. I know to each his own, but this is a phenomenal rendition!!
I concur! Every time I listen I love it even more on this one. Love they Did one from my homeland .
I love that all your guests always bring a very special and personal nuance to the performance and how that fits into the overall impression. Great!!
Straight up did not know this song. Been on a VP deep dive catching up on some songs I missed out on this year. This is phenomenal! I didnt really get it on the first listen so I went back and listened to some earlier versions including Thin Lizzy and Metallica. I then came back and it was like a lightbulb switched. So I would suggest listening to other versions if it dosent click the first time to get familiar with the song.
Voiceplay continues to amaze me! The song choices are always spot on. I cant get enough!
Oh this is such an interesting take to me still as I am more familiar with the Dubliners version of this song. This is incredibly well done guys and Omar is the perfect addition for this song! What a fancy looking thumbnail as well ;)
🥃Cheers, fellas!
Amazingly enough, I just found these guys this morning… And I have spent the last hour watching their videos lol… Just can't get enough❤❤❤❤
I'm loving these little snippets of BTS you're putting at the end.
The hard silkiness of real Irish Whiskey with the perfectly pure harmonies of VoicePlay...
In short: Perfect! 💯🔥🎼
I think it's time for another one!
2:50 What kind of a rough night did you have, Geoff, to hit something like THAT?!?!? YOU ARE A MADMAN!!!!
Apart from this craziness I absolutely enjoyed this cover! It has a really nice flow to it! Good job guys!!!
he put whiskey in his jar instead of water
@@anymous1485 Hahaha probably
That’s what Geoff’s range fanatics had waited for for 7 years lol
@@TaigaMoriBass LOL true though
It’s an F1 in chest voice for anyone wondering… absolute madness 😅
At 29 seconds my mind literally exploded! How Geoff does it so well!?
I can feel the chords deep in my soul!
And Omar.. what a sweet voice! It looks like a cuddle!
I use to sing this in my shows, but it was more a folk type,..but let me tell you this is the BEST version of this I’ve ever heard. I have chills.😊
I love how this is so smooth. If it was whiskey, I couldn't afford it! LOL
Eli's notes are insane!
Wasn’t sure I was going to like this, but it only took one listen to love it. Along with everything else this group of ubertalented people gift us.
Oh this is so much fun!! So happy to see Omar again!! What an opening for Geoff!! And the F1 chest 🤯!! Eli and Omar are soaring on those high notes!! Layne's beatboxing is always impeccable!! Cesar you are rocking your solo part!! Thank you for another wonderful song, and now I'll have musha rain dum a doo, dum a da in my head for a while~~
Как же я обожаю лысого харизматика, он просто прекрасен. Голос , улыбка, харизма, обаяние ❤
Yes! He is wonderful!
Y'all just get better and better! Your vocals are liquid gold in a whiskey glass! Love your vocals, creativity, and how you always look like you're having fun! ❤
I do believe this is the first time I have understood most of the words in this song. Your group did a beautiful job on this one. Thank you.
ditto! I've known this song for years because a group at Disney World, Off-Kilter, used to perform it. My mom and grandma were huge fans, so when I got tired of running around and going on rides, I would take a break and listen to music with them.
OMG, you make my soul happy!
Of all the VP collabs, the ones featuring Omar are my favourites. He fits in so seamlessly, he could be the fifth member of the group. This one is epic. ❤
I was in one long swoon through this. Always a special treat to have Omar along!
Congratulations. 1,4 milion subs!!!
That canonball made my SPINE vibrate. Jesus I love you guys :P
First time I was able to to make out the lyrics for this song. Thank you!
Speaking as someone who had sang this song for the better part ofv2 and a half decades, and publicly at karaoke for 14 years, I'm extremely impressed with this version
Magic ❤
Put headphones on to listen to this - awesome ❤❤❤
“Me, I like sleeping” might be the most relatable lyric of all time 🤣
YUP!
was thinking the same thing
Never heard this song before, but you guys performed it beautifully!
My Irish grandmother would be so proud. 🇮🇪 She loved this song, and I think there's still whiskey in my veins from all that she drank, haha! Gotta admit, I've never heard a pop spin on "Whiskey in the Jar" but I love it. Omar totally killed it, as did all of you. Cheers, boys!
Musha rain dum a doo dum a da!
Tears to my eyes.... Last time I heard that song my Irish ( Eva of Clan McGuire ) would hum it in her nursing home... still teary eyed... Sooo much thanks...
Same. The Irish blood in my veins flows with the whiskey of my ancestors. They'd be proud of this rendition.
Thanks for the birthday present of a new video 🎉❤😊 can't wait!
Whiskey in the jar?
But I'd rather it was in my tea.🤫
Yet another song I am not familiar with, but you gents still manage to make me keep coming back for more.
Look it up. Very popular song
Yes, I know it from Metallica 😉
Love you guys ! You all have such beautiful voices to listen to the variety of songs is great !
Even though I’m a married lady you all being easy on the eye is an added benefit
You get my like button every time!!!
I'm just amazed at how many die-hard fans you have, commenting before this even started. I have heard many covers of this, from classic-melodic to symphonic metal, but you guys are on it every time. Thank you for this classic. And please do name the set designers :)
The more I listen to this one, the more I love it💙 Great harmonies, and a very refreshing take on the song!! Y'all did great and so did Omar..
Loved hearing Cesars lower harmonies in this one... His voice is like velvet! Beautifully done by all!
His vocal texture in the low end affects me like J. None’s midrange, especially in the minor keys… something super compelling about those frequencies I guess. Cesar’s range is so high that it’s a bit of a treat to hear his lower range showcased ✨
All of your voices are amazing 🤩
Frissons garantis à l’écoute de ces chanteurs aux voix sublimes 🥰
J’aime….j’adore ❤❤
2023 is for sure the Year of VoicePlay. All the people they've featured over the past few months - Omar, Ashley, our boy J.None, Anthony Gargiula - fit with VoicePlay like a key in a lock and sound like they come straight from heaven. Can't wait to hear Omar singing live with them later this month!
Geoff, you can't complain about Layne abusing you if you're putting F1 chests and high Cs in your own arrangements! What about Jack's Lament? Folsom Prison?
I will admit, I had to listen to this piece several times before it grew on me. I’d never heard it before so I had nothing to compare it to. I think it’s best said like this, when Voiceplay creates covers of music I’ve never heard before I’m learning to broaden my horizons and add more variety of music to my mental music library. Thank you for this experience because in my research I learned more about the history of this song, as well as some new bands to listen to.
So true. Same for me here... 😅
@@karinwolf9639likewise 🤣
I think I'll have to listen to this Voice Play cover till it grows on me. So far I think they lowered the bar on this one. They have always been my favorite of all acapella groups.
We couldn't have lowered the bar... it was already on the ground. 😬@@marshayoung9387
@@marshayoung9387 I wouldn’t go so far to say they lowered the bar, it was just something different. When the piece really gets going those are the parts I love. They still held the bar high (in my opinion) because the melody has been stuck in my head for a few days lol.
What the F1 ?
As a fan for about a year and a half, and a patron for 14 months, EVERY time you have released something, it continues to raise the bar.
Every time surpassing what you've done prior.
How much further can it go?
Higher than Geoff or Layne can reach?
Higher than Eli can jump?
We hope it never stops.
Amazing job.
Thank you.
Can't tell if that's chest or chest-fry
It's pure chest, buddy!!!
He just uses a lot of glottal compression to cut off the buzz-type for the low notes.
He even confirmed from a livestream that he doesn't even know what is a chest-fry. The only situation that he uses chest-fry is for his devil laugh and for his fry scoop, to add effect to something.
So we have the first definitive held and solid chest F1 from Geoff!!!
I knew this was just about to happen anytime!😍😍😍😍😍

I actually like this version best. It keeps the storytelling feel of the traditional ones while including more variety/interesting moments from verse to verse, and of course the singing is fantastic. Do people not understand a cover isn't supposed to be a copy?

Wow, just Wow. I have loved that song about a wild Irish boy, caught up in the years of Ireland's "captivity" by the English Crown. The words are from that era, the tone poem may be a deal older. I think that Irish boy would have approved and danced and offered oiskiy (whiskey, the fluid of life).
It's official

Difícil acreditar que isso e feito só com as vozes deles! Maravilhoso❤❤❤❤❤
I listened to this with my good headphones (as I always do for music Videos)
I don't know if the mixing and mastering has gotten better over time but man... Geoff just massaged my brain.. Such a sweet and gentle bass sound! Not over the top, just awesome
I also love what he once said - and i paraphrase since I don't remember the exact words but it was something like: it does not matter if your voice is deep or high, it is important to practise having a well trained and nice singing voice
You guys are so good! As a first soprano, the notes Geoff hits are INSANE to me, Omar’s voice is beautiful, Eli’s voice is so unique and I love it, Cesar’s voice is sooo smooth, and I have no idea how Layne does all that, but it’s AWESOME! Great job guys, hope you have a great day and keep doing what your doing, cause it sounds lovely
great harmonies guys ! every voice blended like a well woven carpet each thread blending with the next from Geoff;s deep foghorn bass to Omars and Eli's high notes and every word clear as with all your videos. great job guys and early happy holidays..cant wait to see what you doing for the season this year...
Eli - WOW! You are always amazing but you knocked this song out of the park!
Cesar’s voice is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!
Beautiful. I love this rendition. It's been a few years since I heard the Irish Rovers sing it, but I'm pretty sure this will be the one I remember going forward. The lovely harmonies, smooth delivery of all the special vocals... Wow.
I am so exciteeeeed 😁 best news in the morning when you see that there is new voiceplay content. These guys inspired me to make music again
Geoff - Your transitions to and from subharmonics are otherworldly!
Eli - 3:13 That entire line felt so beautifully, flawlessly effortless!
Cesar - Your ability to timbre-match your co-vocalists is equal parts inspirational and transcendental!
Layne - Proving again that even a "simple" rhythm can hold so much depth and subtlety!
Omar - "Killin' It" is an understatement! Your range, control and consistency are stellar!
You guys always make me come up short on words. The music you make is beautiful. Your skills and talents speak on a whole other level. Your humbleness is heartwarming. Thank you for sharing yourselves with the world!
I had never heard this before but it’s really grown on me the more I listen. Of course everything VoicePlay does is top tier!!! ❤
Such a different arrangement with such a different delivery! I definitely felt/heard a story with this version, great job as always!!
An amazing facet of Geoffs presentations is the perfect pitch performed. I'm an old man now but was blessed with near perfect pitch - - - what a Joy to hear him [and his mates] perform with such prowess
I'd never heard this song outside the medieval/ren faire world, and of course your take on it is so different that it caught me off guard at first. Especially the slowed tempo and naked bassy beginning. Then the harmonies kicked in, and my brain sighed in happiness. Still very different from the version I know, but beautiful and more modern and oh-so-VoicePlay! Thank you!
Geoff's beginning is insane !! On A1's !
And a freaking solid and thick F1 in chest voice!!!!
I was blown away with his transitions from chest to subharmonics: Smooth as Butter!🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
How is that man's Voice so deep
Ok now it’s time to jam!! Right up there with Celtic thunder!

@@huldradracoWhat impresses me most, is not even how low it is, but how rough, punchy and smooth the low note is!!!🤯🤯🤯🤯
That's what I was talking about: Geoff's voice always conquers our own expectations!!!
Especially for haters who think he can't sing that low, and then, he casually takes off their head.😉 (It's just a joke)
This being an Irish song and your most excellent voices...💚a zillion times to all of you. Marvellously well-done. (First time I dared to use a heart. Truly innocently meant-hope no one gets mad.)
I think people place too much emphasis on romantic love when it comes to the heart center. This over-emphasis is why the misunderstandings happen too much.
You can send love energy to anyone you like via an emoji heart. You sent a green one which I think most people might associate with the fact this is an Irish song being sung. Also, green and pink are the two colors associated with the heart chakra anyway. Pink is usually associated with unconditional love, which isn't necessarily romantic in nature, but can be parental or filial/brotherly/sisterly love, or even love for an animal friend.
you all are so great! all my respect from vienna austria 🇦🇹
I love this song and these fellas did it justice ♥️♥️♥️💯
Oh hell yeah. One of my fave songs EVER!!!!
Because so many are wondering There's not an original singer known for this one. It's an Irish folk song from the 17th or 18th century. We don't know bands from this time.
Then The Dubliners brang it on before Thin Lizzy did it in a more melodic way (1972).
Metallica did it 1998.🔥
Some others did it too, like Roger Whittaker, Gary Moore, Grateful Dead, The Pogues, Bryan Adams, Pulp, Smokie, Rednex, Paddy Goes to Holyhead, Fiddlers Green, Santiano, Valetti and VoicePlay (2023) 😁
My favorite is Metallica's, but there are good chances tomorrow I'll have 2 favorite cover versions if VP makes it melodic too.
WOAH! This is great, amazing and a little bit to cry about how good you are
and how almost every performance of yours makes you want to sing along.
Cool, very cool!
What a cool modernized version of a folk staple! Love it!
