I can't wait to get a video on Harvey. The flip of making the acid side the good type was really good. I would also point out that penguins are famously some of the most caring parents in the animal kingdom, right down to being driven to raising (well, kidnapping) other penguins' babies if theirs is killed or lost. So, Oswalda being so willing to murder her sons is incredibly ironic given her nickname.

@@SerumLake if I may be honest? I didn't give much thought to the whole outrage or uproar of making The Penguin a woman, I just know that if I was asked to come up with a new iteration of the character I would've gone with a Baby Herman situation from Who Framed Roger Rabbit, maybe explore the more negative aspects of childish behavior that are rarely addressed in comic book shows, maybe even contrast it with Bruce's/Batman's character traits, I will harp on the fact that Bruce Timm and co settled on a name like Oswalda though, I expected something a bit more creative than that.

I like how they also flipped Penguin's personality.
The traditional Penguin has a lot of resentment about how his family is looked down upon by other rich families and he really wants to be a legitimate member of high society but he's awkward around them. This Penguin is very comfortable in high society and mingles well with them, but she still keeps those illicit dealings like the traditional Penguin.
A lot of previous versions of the Penguin also had overbearing mothers. This version is an awful mother who killed her own son.

    • @karolchruzik1919
      @karolchruzik1919 6 месяцев назад +109

I feel quite the opposite to be honest, penguin lives on the fringes of gotham's high society, putting on a show for the rich folk on her boat but ultimatly in public she's just a stylish singular club owner. A relatively successfull business woman doing Jessica Rabbit impression. Batman makes a point about how she's hiding in plain sight, having acess to all the rich and powerfull of Gotham while not actually being considered one of them. This is something show almost doesn't go into but it really makes for the most key factor in penguin for me. She wants to be one of the elites of high society but there's a barrier keeping her from truly belonging, and she wails and scratches at that barrier bringing out the worst of herself out of spite. Thorne plays on that insecurity of her and pits her against her sons, letting penguin completely ruin her upstart of an empire without having to lift a finger. Letting her completely humiliate herself. That is top penguin for me but might have just imagined it.

@@karolchruzik1919Nah Thorne was playing her, that's why he implied that it was the loyal son and not the rat, he knew that she wouldn't let that betrayal stand but even if she let him live it could be the start of her empire imploding. This is why he didnt help out the rat either, he doesn't want a traitor on his side, but knowing that she's willing to kill her sons by this point he knows that the kid will either blab to the cops for protection or he'll die and Thorne will have dealt Penguin 2 mortal blows to her empire in one fell swoop, either scenario being a massive boon.
Mind you he could've forced the kid to blab to the cops under his protection but he doesnt trust the kid so he probably didn't consider that an option

She was just as cold and ruthless as the character usually is, as we literally see her kill her own son without a shred of remorse or not even a tear; that alone is COLD ASF! It's also refreshing to see a Penguin that actually belonged in high society for once and enjoys it.

If anything, I think being a woman makes Penguin a lot more interesting. Not only is she a ruthless monster who didn't even hesitate to merk her own kid, but unlike every other female Batman villain, she is not conventionally attractive. So she can't disarm men by using se× appeal like Harley, Ivy, or Catwoman would. Instead she's clawed her way to the top by sheer determination, intelligence, and willingness to do whatever it takes to win, even if it means throwing her morals out the window....or into the ocean, so to speak.

... damn, almost a decade already?
Which reminds me, the trailer and charas announced for Matt Reeves *"The Penguin"* makes me wonder how much that show (just one more month till first episode airs, gettin' closer \o/) will look like Robin Lord Taylor's Oswald's ascension to power, and his constant fight to _remain_ in power.
I loved Oz in Reeves' "The Batman" so I'm not worried.
I'm sure it will be good, just a tad strange that 2 whole live action shows would specifically depict Oswald Cobblepot's rise in Gotham City.
Sure, in *Gotham* he's not the "evil protagonist", but during season 1, when they didn't know exactly which direction to take the show on, we spend as much time with Bruce Wayne that we do with Oswald, watching both of them struggle with their respective issues, fighting uphill battles one after the other...
Bruce had Alfred and Selina Kyle
Oswald has Gertrude (and Edward... and later Elijah Van Dahl Edward... then Edward... you decide if I'm talking about the dog that mauled Nyssa Al Ghul or not.)
Ok, thesis over, nice video Serum, as usual!

Also there was all that talk about a mob power vacuum that never really seemed to materialize. Makes me think this was a pilot and a lot of the big ideas the creators wanted to include had to be cut out due to not being given as many episodes as originally planned.

Penguins are excellent parents, in fact they're so strongly bonded to their offspring that if they lose a chick, they will grieve terribly, and the distraught mother might even try to steal another penguin's chick because she is so desperate to have her baby back.
You're getting penguins confused with storks, and possibly loons. Storks are notorious for this, they will typically lay 3-4 eggs but only raise 1-2 chicks. They just sort of let their babies play Battle Royale. Loons are even worse, they'll merk their baby themselves if they sense there aren't enough fish to feed their entire clutch of loonlets.

I've adapted The Mad Hatter 8 times now.
My favorite method for adapting is taking elements I enjoy/feel aren't fully expanded on and running with it while adding my own bits.
In my newest adaptation, I'm exploring how growing up in Arkham Asylum would affect him (as that's a part of one of his origins), and I've made his father Professor Pyg (because somebody said his dad in that origin kinda looks like him). I've added his desire for company, and changed it to a platonic yearning for his missing siblings (one of whom is Clock King, as they were brothers in a comic for the 1966 show).

Even the ones where he is more of mob boss gives this impression with Arkham’s version earning respect through means that are brutal but not as bad as the other gang leaders, and The Batman (the animated version with the crazy joker design) exemplifying this.
But I do think this version does carry some of the aspects of the penguin even if the design doesn’t work as well for the character as it did with the OG in my opinion, like how she has insane influence over Gotham with her resources which keep the other gangs in check, her high class based life style, and the fact she is not afraid to make an example out of anyone her dares defies her, I wouldn’t say it is necessarily the type of Penguin I like, but I like how they committed to gender change in the story with the motherly theme.

First of all I had no idea they made another batman series, so thanks for telling me, but secondly her design seems really perfect as a Penguin design. He was always a grandiose character, and it feels very fitting that that charisma would get translated to a flashy stage woman. I haven’t seen this show (obviously I just learned about it) but I already really like this version!

The thing is, the writers understood what makes the Penguin the Penguin, and made this character's different gender matter in a germane way. I like it, people have been trying to do something with the Penguin in various adaptations for decades and this is a refreshing direction.

I like how they changed up the Oswald Cobblepot we're used to, not just changing the gender but also changing how the penguin is usually seen as I like how they made her extremely cruel and uncaring while still keeping something's from the original Penguin from Batman the animated series, this is what Suicide Squad kill a franchise should learn from although we all know they never will.

i really like how this penguin is more than just a genderbend, she has her own identity and new cruelty. I also enjoy the fact that unlike other genderbends, shes not overly sexualized, nor is she overly self insertive of those who dont fit in the category of beauty standards or average. Her design has meaning and clear purpose.
Ive seen penguin explored in so many other ways, and its why i like the weird joker that has long hair, i forgot which cartoon. It was such a unique depiction outside the arkham joker and his similar variants.

Something I like is that this version of Penguin is exactly what every other version wishes they were, a respected member of high society
Meanwhile, her two sons are more like the two different versions of Penguin from before, either someone who wishes to be respected amongst Gotham’s elite or someone who is delusional and thinks they are respected when that isn’t the case
My one complaint is that Oswalda is a terrible name

As mentioned in the overall thoughts video of the show, Capped Crusader only wears the the face of the mid 1900s. So Penguin's "sleeping with fishes" tactic was a cool use of a trope, especially with the character's motherly persona. The underwater cemetery scene reminded me a bit of something H.P. Lovecraft would have written.

I didn't mind the change but, if the show writers wanted to introduce a female version of Penguin, I don't see why they couldn't just introduce Addison Cobblepot, Penguin's daughter from the recent comics. They keep this idea of Penguin having a family as his gang, with Oswald being a abusive father and, in the end of the episode he's arrested or killed and his daughter takes over his business. This would be a nice way to subvert with fans expectations showing how these characters we know will go to different directions.

I thought she was actually quite enjoyable in the show. I do wish however that her design was a little more unique because comparatively she is really just Oswald with lipstick. Still however for me there has never been an actor or design to nail the Penguin as much as Burgess Meredith. His cadence, his unique voice, the distinct laugh he created because he couldn't handle the smoke, all that makes hum the definitive Penguin actor to me.

My first critique of this version of the Penguin is that she lacks the crippling insecurity about appearance and station that made the more well known version interesting/relateable and a more cogent commentary on the plight of those obsessed with external validation. She's just a garden variety psycppath. Which brings me to my second critique. If she is the psycho/sociopath presented, so much so that she would kill a child on the mere suspicion of thwarting her ambition, then she shouldn't have adult children. Surely they would have had the life throttled out of them the first developmental marker they missed or B they brought home. I understand the writers wanted to communicate ruthlessness, but that is too much ruthlessness to make the character beleivable.

I kinda thought Penguin would be a drag queen. The way she sang and danced on a boat made me think of Sea Witch Ursula. Did you know Ursula was inspired by a drag queen. Glad they still had the weapon umbrella. Along with the top hat and monocle. She also seems like the Batman beyond villain MA Mayhem.

Ok I know you calling Penguin a short dumpy looking weirdo is just you joking around but Caped Crusader's Penguin is just Btas's Penguin with Bayonetta's legs also I always liked his small stature since its what made people underestimate him and it would give him the chance to show both his enemies as well as the viewers to never judge a book by his cover cause he would have to show everyone why he's someone you shouldn't underestimate
Also while its true Penguin is written differently across media most versions of him have one thing in common and that was the pride they had of their family and how much they wanted to be looked upon, it was an admirable trait despite the fact that the Cobblepots were usually dispicted as corrupt but this Penguin didn't care one bit about her family and to me that's like having a version of Joker that never smiles.

I really liked what little we saw of her, I just wish there was more. A scary but matronly mob boss who uses people's perceptions of her to her own advantage is a really fun concept. I honestly wish she had been an end-of-season baddie instead of the first one so she'd have more build up. Ah well.

Whilst I've no issue with this iteration's concept for The Penguin, I think the execution is off in the following ways:
    - *The Design:* It's basically the comic book Penguin with eye makeup and lipstick. The story reimagines her role in a way similar to _Gotham_ and the 2022 Matt Reeves film. The character design, on the other hand, seems phoned-in, somewhat uncanny, and grotesque. (And not in a cool way, either.) The name _Oswalda_ is off. The writers actually bothered to create an original take on this character, but the design feels like it was left to 3:30pm on a Friday.
    - *The Performance:* I feel awful about this, because I really admire Minnie Driver. She gave a technically perfect west-coast US accent, but she missed the point of this character. As written, this Penguin is a spunky, sharp-tongued wise-ass. The detectives begging to be insulted during her act brings to mind stories about Groucho Marx. The voice for this character needed to be way more vaudeville. Maybe a Mae West imitation, as you suggested. Maybe sassy Brooklynese or Queens-speak. Or New England Brahmin. Or, for an added layer of backstory, maybe a Borscht-belt accent.
