    Great video, now we need another one covering Sodor’s pre-railway history. I would love to hear more about the Kings of Sodor, Battle of Crovan’s Gate, Saint Machan, all that rich history.
    The dates regarding Old Stuck-Up seem an easy fix: change his number. For my headcanon, I’m using 40143. The story takes place in ‘84, it was withdrawn Jan22,85, and scrapped Sept the following year.
    Jake Atkinson has a video showing 40143 in BR blue pulling tankers. And if the date is right, this was filmed Sept 1983, before I would have the engine visit Sodor.

    • @primrosevale1995
      @primrosevale1995 Месяц назад +1

      Personally my headcanon is the events of _James and the Diesel Engines_ take place between 1981 and 1983. The story "Old Stuck-Up" takes place in early spring of 1981, which makes the ending a bit more poignant given his scrapping that May.
      Other changes I'd make to that book include having Crossed Lines feature James saying Awdry’s quote of diesels’ double cabs making them two-faced and untrustworthy and involving that in the story, have James be rescuesed by the Works diesels: Den and Dart, but still remain prejudiced, and including a new final story based on Narrow Gauge’s The Truth About Scrap and TheGermanofSodor’s Cruel Irony where James takes a train to the Mainland and meets D261, who is on the verge of scrap, where he realizes diesels are suffering the same fate as steam engines and unnerved by D261’s hindsight and admittance of wrongdoing, which finally makes him drop his prejudice of diesels.

    Hearing about Flying Scotsman made me smile, as I was on one of the locomtives tours last year, between Edinburgh and Aberdeen and back, as part of it's 100th birthday celebration. My first ever Railway Series book was Enterprising Engines, which Scotsman was apart of. I was 2 years old when I got that book. It’s odd seeing just how late it was for Sodor to have a proper, standard-gauge railway.
    For some context, by the time the first standard gauge railroad was partially built, the United States was in the middle of a Civil War, which involved the prolific usage of trains.
    What’s more striking is the fact the tunnel leading to Vicarstown had turned out to be a difficult project, especially when - at the same time - the Commonwealth of Virginia had successfully funded and constructed a tunnel through Rockfish Gap, which was - at the time - one of the longest tunnels in the world.
    If anything, this shows just how dedicated Awdry was to his worldbuilding.

    You had a good reason to wait.
    This Video was really good, I like the fact you updated a video, Maybe you could do that with some other timelines or maps. These are suggestions and I do not expect these to become real videos. -RL

    Wow, extremely detailed, but brilliant editing and research! I'm amazed to hear all that history about Sodor in The Railway Series in one lengthy video, with mentions of the books, the Thomas & Friends TV series, and the upcoming 80th anniversary, plus the Flying Scotsman brought back into service and the Skarloey Railway engines visiting the Talyllyn Railway! 😃 By the way, truly sorry to hear about your grandfather; may he rest in peace. Your work truly paid off, Nic.

    One of the best things about the Railway Series was not only it's attention to detail with its characters and locations but all of the real life Political Red tape and financial difficulties that come with running a railway. Seeing this updated video really gives a true appreciation for every conceivable detail that could be put into Awdrys stories. He didn't have to but he did and gives the railway all that much more authenticity then oh the mainland wanted to build a railway network and struggled to build one but eventually succeeded. Thank you for this in-depth video and thank you all who helped make it.
    I'm sorry to hear about your Grandpa however I do imagine though that you two meant a lot to each other and that he lived a full life. May he rest in peace and maybe he can say hi to The Reverend in the afterlife.

I still have a few unanswered questions, but this video is amazing. For some reason, Im kinda sad, how it's end. Mostly because of Gordon. We need more books... :D

    Duuuuuuude, hearing the history of the island and its railways like this almost makes me look at the TV series with an upturned nose. There is so much lore that the TV series just doesn't touch and kind of makes it feel empty compared to the source material. Thank you so much for putting all of this together, Mr Tug.
