His kicks look like something out of a movie. He was a really good fighter and was beating everyone quickly in UFC 2 even destroying a student of Robert Bussey with elbows until he was defeated by Royce Gracie.
Pat Smith is a top notch MMA fighter with all heart. Long before UFC, Pat did bareknuckle karate, JKD, judo, and hybrid submission wrestling. I've KNOWN HIM since 93' where we grew up! This clip is a sample of his bareknuckle ability. As you see PAT can serve it up!
Now, that is what I consider an exceptional striker. He is very quick, pinpoint accurate, delivers with devastating impact, and is a master of distance / timing. I wish I'd see more of his type in the U.F.C. and M.A.A. A striker who is missing one of the above key ingredients is an easy target for grapplers. Also included in a good striker are these traits: Superior cardiovascular endurance, calmness under pressure, flexibility, ability to take a hit, and to read your opponent.
The reason I say he was ahead of his time is because he understood the full power blitz attacks that everyone in mma uses today. Technical strikers and guys for whom striking is not the best attribute do it and can have success. Dude was intense and for the time he was exceptionally fit considering his size.
Tom Edwards was among the first generetion of the non-Japanese students under Kazuyoshi Ishi, the founder of Seidokaikan and K-1 organization. Edwards trained at the headquarter dojo in Osaka along with Satake, Kakuda, and Tagami back in 1980s.
Pat smith was my favorite fighter in da Sabaki tournament i believe he won da tournament n 93...n this tournament he lost n da finals...this was n 92...i looked up to this guy
Was that in one of the very early UFC fights? I remember Pat Smith and Ken Shamrock being involved in those fights. But, it's been so many years I can't remember if that was the fight you were referring to...
I'm sorry, I re-read my comment and it didn't make any sense. What I meant is that DQ for a groin strike in the Sabaki Challenge can only occur on the 3rd offense. First and second offenses earn a warning and a penalty, respectively. Per the rules, the groin strike in this match should not have earned a DQ, as suggested by mstea001. Sorry for the confusion.
Hard to see from the footage, but the first kick looked like it landed pretty low, maybe below the belt. Not sure if it was blocked to hit there but it seemed to take his concentration away from his defence.
he didnt fall off, his knee hits the edge of the mat as he falls over. showing he had at least a foot of distance from the edge of the mat when he got kicked.
xxr,Shotokan is semi-contact while kyukushin is full contact, this is kyukushin you see it on the kimono's left part where there are japanese letters. and he hit the balls yes, but his gard isn't good, as you can notice it's low, so that hit is incredible nice and cool, but it's Edwards fault of the low gard.
your kiddin rite, I fight in varoius kyo-koshin tourneys, traditional karate formatted tourneys, open karated formatted tourneys, duration bouts and full contact bouts and not one event allowed groin shots. I was 13 when pat won this savate challenge it was after he lossed to hug. and groin shots were never permitted.
wow. i actually own the VHS tape of this tournament and haven't seen this clip in years. there was another great KO in the tape with a guy in a camo gi.
Not only that, he was purported to break three, solid six inch pineboards with a forward lunge punch. Two of the three men holding the boards were hospitalized with cracked ribs!!! Mas Oyama had 270 bouts in a two year period, NONE OF WHICH he lost. He fought grapplers, boxers and all sorts of people. Once, he and a buddy were jumped by seven, armed assailants. Mas and his friend took them all out. I bet Oyama could have fought multiple opponents, simultaneously in the Octagon and won.
The low blow only happen because the guy jump back to avoid a front kick from Pat smith. Futhermore Pat is Known for leading with a front kick, watch his other fights on youtube or better yet rent UFC 6. If your not familiar with Sabaki, most participants break boards before their matches and most wear a protective cup. So in my estimation he is not grabbing his package and being cocky, he's simply adjusting his cup. And about the EGO, he just seems pumped up to me.
I'm not sure what you're saying. Do you mean it wasn't a kick to the groin? If so, then we simply disagree - I think it was clearly a kick to the groin. If we agree on that, are you saying that a shot to the groin wasn't against the rules?
There was no groin strike. He threw the kick at the mid-section and the other guys elbow deflected it down. It never made significant contact. The reason he was knocked out is because of that mid-level kick but is more so because he used his left hand to block it. He deflected it with his elbow and should have kept his hands ready but instead ate a heel to the temple.
Smith is very fast and strong too. Although it didn't help him much against Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie. But as a strictly stand up fighter he IS very, very good.
It's either open weight or the heavyweight limit is low like some other sports. Pat Smith 'injured' his hand against Maasaki Satake in that Kyokushin Karate match and also got disqualified from a boxing match after he repeatedly threw spinning backfists. Basically, he has no heart and gives up if he can't bully a opponent.
well of course it would show itself very effective against dodging hits and closing the gap. That is what the entire martial art is about. It depends on how much power each fighter has in him/her.
Pat Smith fought in many MMA events (including the first two UFCs) and lost most of his fights through a complete lack of ground game. His pre-fight interviews were always great, though.
A friendly advice from a fellow fighter!!!!! "Dont move back with the hands down if you are under attack,,,,, Instead, pivot to the opponents blind spot then hit with a counter."
I hate to correct you, but Patrick Smith defeated two fighters in UFC II, (Scott Morris and Johnny Rhodes) before losing the championship match to Royce Gracie by strike submission. He did not return until UFC 6, where he fought a worthless can named Rudyard "El Tiburon" Moncayo, whom he choked. It was then that he pulled out due to a stomach problem.
Guy in dogi: I would say gedan barai, cut kick pull around and kick to the face. It's always the ones you don't see that hurt the most. Guard dropped after he did the low blow to groin area. Props for fighting.
Guy who got knocked out was very nervous. Smith took advantage of that guy's fear. The dude in the white, his training just obviously went out the window.
It doesn't matter whether Patrick Smith kicked him too low or not. The guy in the white gi should not have let his guard down, regardless if the kick was illegal or not. It could have been a kick to the knee and the other guy should have been ready.
No not a direct groin kick, he went for stomach kick witch was deflected by the other guy. Plus you wear cups in this competition and that type of kick isn't painful, it destroys your balance.
@LAHrebirth That's what my sensei taught me since I was a white belt. Its really easy to counter hit when you just doge diagonally especially when the opponent rush like that I mean what the hell was his 1st kick was that supose to be a mae geri?. I'ts a big surprise some "black" belts don't know how to doge properly. So glad I met a truly skilled sensei.
It also depend on the situation. For example, a karate expert and a BJJ expert, on equal power, fighting on solid concrete. Karate would win. On a surface such as the UFC ring, BJJ would win. I don't mean to put you down, but your question was inappropriate considering each style's advantages.
I'm surprised the swing kick landed, it was right in front of the guy in red. That kick travels a long line and needs a better setup than a front thrust kick to land. I fight TKD and have NEVER been hit with this kick - and I'm 51. Not exactly fast on reactions.
Ever look Mas Oyama up? He and one of his buddies thwarted an attack of seven, armed assailants and sent them flying. I have a feeling ( I am not 100% adamant on this) but the Octagon may not want someone as volatile, quick, powerful and accurate as a Mas Oyama Striker inside the ring. He would put everyone to utter shame and defeat within milliseconds. And, no disrespect to the Gracies, but most of their opponents are sloppy strikers.
@Diego85Nap "karate" is a definition of martial arts in the Japanese language of the word hand/strike,real style ismainly kempo first presented by the "Ryukyuans". As to where you would call chinese style of fighting is "kung fu"which varies into sub catagories like 5 animal style, chinese boxing, or chinese kempo, dimmak, wingchug etc... are all form or styles and techniques, but different tournments vary in rules ,but you call them tournments, i call em 战斗's
Pat was so ahead of his time.
His kicks look like something out of a movie. He was a really good fighter and was beating everyone quickly in UFC 2 even destroying a student of Robert Bussey with elbows until he was defeated by Royce Gracie.

Pat was a proper martial artist back then got to say that.
He’d get very high on himself though which never helped when he faced good opponents
Now THAT was cool! You don't see anything like that in UFC nowadays :)
The reason I say he was ahead of his time is because he understood the full power blitz attacks that everyone in mma uses today. Technical strikers and guys for whom striking is not the best attribute do it and can have success. Dude was intense and for the time he was exceptionally fit considering his size.
Black kimono against a dark background helps too
The guy is still fighting (he's in his mid-40s now)!
He knocked out Brad Imes a few months back.
I don't know why people gave you 3 thumbs down, you're speaking the truth. I gave you a thumbs up to help counteract some of those lol.
@dcracing1 "bricks no hit back" is from bloodsport, you are actually quoting from enter the dragon :)
Now THAT'S how I remember fighting!
Pat smith was my favorite fighter in da Sabaki tournament i believe he won da tournament n 93...n this tournament he lost n da finals...this was n 92...i looked up to this guy
amazing stuff thanks for posting.
That was aimed at some guy a page ago or something. This video is pretty awesome. It should be taken for what it is: a man at the top of his game.
Was that in one of the very early UFC fights? I remember Pat Smith and Ken Shamrock being involved in those fights. But, it's been so many years I can't remember if that was the fight you were referring to...
So this is the famous Sabaki challenge. Nice!!!
My instructor told me that back in 1972. What is the reason for it? I forgot, but its a good one.
I'm sorry, I re-read my comment and it didn't make any sense.

@fatdoi003
That was also my question. Normally kicks under the belt are illegal. Don't know what rules are applicable is this tourment.
@SkyRunnerProductions if you look slowmotion 0:53 you can see it's below the belt, but i don't know the rules...
I like how the video for 5 second knock-out is over a minute long.
xxr,Shotokan is semi-contact while kyukushin is full contact, this is kyukushin you see it on the kimono's left part where there are japanese letters.
and he hit the balls yes, but his gard isn't good, as you can notice it's low, so that hit is incredible nice and cool, but it's Edwards fault of the low gard.

I like the board-break to cock-adjustment. Wonderful technique there Pat.
Also, if this is an older video, the groin was a legal target in traditional martial arts competitions.
in those days groin kicks where allowed, and in some karate tournements they are still allowed so he didnt cheat.
Yeah I agree. Usually you would try to jam that sort of an attack. Crapht there was no roundhouse in his combo.
Once, he and a buddy were jumped by seven, armed assailants. awesome groin kick setup to hook kick combo

@SD78 is this the pat smith that knocked out butterbean in mma
The kick did look low, but the guy in white moved back and up slightly so that is why it looks low.
There was no groin strike. He threw the kick at the mid-section and the other guys elbow deflected it down. It never made significant contact. The reason he was knocked out is because of that mid-level kick but is more so because he used his left hand to block it. @NATIONALSFAN93 I think it hit the inside of the leg, not the groin.
Smith is very fast and strong too. Although it didn't help him much against Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie.
But as a strictly stand up fighter he IS very, very good.
i take tea kwon do and that kick was a reverse turning kick and it was perfect!!
What's with the wood breaking before the fight?.
@chrisnealson And white, need a list?
It's either open weight or the heavyweight limit is low like some other sports.
Pat Smith 'injured' his hand against Maasaki Satake in that Kyokushin Karate match and also got disqualified from a boxing match after he repeatedly threw spinning backfists.
Basically, he has no heart and gives up if he can't bully a opponent.
INDEED
Not to mention he raped a 14 year old girl
@chrisnealson names please.emelianenko is not brazilian or mexican.couture,silva ect.too
well of course it would show itself very effective against dodging hits and closing the gap. That is what the entire martial art is about. It depends on how much power each fighter has in him/her.
Patrick smith is a great American fighter. I wonder if he would do well in the ufc
Pats past away from cancer. I grew up with his younger brother and sister
Once a drunk middle-aged guy grabbed my wrist and I pushed him away from me. Same thing.
... that's why the backwards turning heel kick is the number one kick used for knocking out your opponent in TaeKwonDo tournaments :Þ
indeed. he caught him off guard and the commentators make a big deal about it.
pat smith put first bricks in ufc
who are you to tal about him?
if u watch the replay the kick hits his elbow and redirects it from a kick to the stomach area to his crotch
Amazing!
SWEEP THE LEG JOHNNY !
Yeah it did, pause at :55 you can see it connect.
Sabaki Karate. Pat Smith was 2xworld champion
Guy in dogi: I would say gedan barai, cut kick pull around and kick to the face. It's always the ones you don't see that hurt the most. Guard dropped after he did the low blow to groin area. Props for fighting.
Great kicks !
Was that Fred Ettish getting knocked out again?
read etish story man it wsa hard ut he put on his man pants ,,, he faught at 50 and won ,,in mma
hahahaha. good ol fred, gettin beat up again.
Guy who got knocked out was very nervous. Smith took advantage of that guy's fear. The dude in the white, his training just obviously went out the window.
Amazing
man that kick damn near took his head off
@LIVINGONTHEDOLE true fighting is mainly half mental but never underestimate youre opponent.
I hope Thomas Edwards said "Boards don't hit back" just before getting ktfo.
for those who said that smith kick edwards in the nuts watch closely edwards left hand he blocked dawn the first kick
@Diego85Nap Disqualified you mean?
I have to agree, that the groin kick set him up!
this is the point of moving out of the LINE!! I have problems doing it as well when I am sparring.
Didn't need to, I mean you gotta admit if a kick even just brushes past there you're gonna be like "Shit!" and be distracted.
@joenobody13 really? you dont know why a karate ka didnt last in the ufc?
Well, one kick to the small head stunned the opponent.
The second kick to the big head knocked the opponent out.
It did not look like a low blow to me. Also dont some of you know who Pattrick Smith is?
@LAHrebirth That's what my sensei taught me since I was a white belt. Its really easy to counter hit when you just doge diagonally especially when the opponent rush like that I mean what the hell was his 1st kick was that supose to be a mae geri?. I don't mean to put you down, but your question was inappropriate considering each style's advantages.
That was definately to the crotch, but he did score a knockout. So even if they deducted the 1 point, it's still game-set-match.
That other fighter didn't even try and block or fight back. He looked to nervous or scared to fight back.
I'm surprised the swing kick landed, it was right in front of the guy in red. That kick travels a long line and needs a better setup than a front thrust kick to land. I fight TKD and have NEVER been hit with this kick - and I'm 51. Not exactly fast on reactions.

Did the announcer say Robo-tai?

Very good skill you finish him in a few sec...very good. Aoki
that is, if it is a tie, after three rounds, then they count the boards, to see the winner
For that alone I know that you have even understood the concept of Jeet Kune Do.
very good
anyone notice he got hit in the groin first, before he got take down
guy kicked him in the leg. that was badass shit right there.
i dont think the outcome would have been different if his groin kick had been to the stomach instead - it was still a good combination
wasn't that a kick to the groin at first though?
Haven't* sorry. That was a typo.
No weight-classes in this competition I suppose?
I like how the soft white boy is holding his head with both hands! Oh the pain, the PAIN! Priceless.
No thats the sound you make when you are kicked below the belt.
That guy in the white looks like a young Fred Ettish. He fought about as well too.
