Almost down toward my way. My folks' old house has a picture of the screw pile light that used to serve Windmill Pt. in their living room. Safe travels, Cpt.

Range markers and lights work like the sights on a rifle. There's a higher marker, usually with a light, in the back, and another marker that's lower in the front. If you're sailing so that the two markers are lined up, like you'd line up those rifle sights, then you're in the channel. Like you said, they're a lot less important now that just about every boat that draws enough water to care about a channel now already has radar. Radars break and electronics fail, though, and the sea doesn't care, so lights and markers and fog horns are still good stuff. The radio towers at Greenbury Point across the Severn from Annapolis were first built in 1918 during World War One to communicate with Europe. They were later used to communicate with Navy submarines into the 1980s, including submerged ballistic missile subs. Growing up in the area we used to say that if you wanted to watch the start of the war with the Soviet Union, then just look over there - those towers will be targeted right away. "But they will be the last things you see!" There were eventually 19 towers up until 1999, the last three were left standing as navaigation aids for vessels on the Bay and for aircraft flying into Baltimore-Washington Airport nearby.
