David Lee Roth (the lead singer) has said the song has a double meaning - it’s about fast cars AND a stripper named Panama that he met in Arizona.

Great reaction. The song is actually epic. And it is 100% about a CAR! But Dave is a master lyricist and likes innuendo. Fans guessed for a long time until Dave officially said it's about a CAR. Love you two!

For the Love of God almighty... Please do not react to the Live Without a Net version of Eruption!!! I've seen VH 11 times between 1979 and 2015 (always with David Lee Roth on the mic). Eddie was drunk and seriously stoned on coke when they recorded the Live Without a Net concerts. PLEASE, I am doing you a favor when I say find a fan recorded version of the Eruption Solo from one of the last two concerts they ever played. The last two concerts at the Hollywood Bowl in 2015 had the best Eruption Solos Eddie ever played. Ed was sober, and 29 years worth of playing; BETTER! I was there at both shows. Trust me! Today (09/13/20210 is my 58th birthday... With age comes wisdom. Love your videos!

@@MacPro8CoreMan I think you're confusing that video with an earlier version. The 1986 solo with Sammy that's 14 minutes or so long is the gold standard. I know which you are talking about and that's not the one I mean. I'll just drop the link for them so there isn't any mix up.

Great band,Great show. I miss Eddie. King Edward was taken away way to soon.I saw them 8 times. Every show was a masterful display of showmanship, talent, and a great party band. Ed was a musical genius . A once in a life time musician. He is my generations, Jimmy Hendrix. RIP King EDWARD VAN HALEN.

Eddie mentioned in an interview at the Smithsonian in2015 that the revving during the breakdown in Panama was his car, a 1972 Lamborghini Miura S, backed up to the door of his studio, 5150, hitting the RPM redline. So 80s.
BJ and Asia are both correct ...But here’s where it gets interesting: The red ’51 Merc custom shown in the mind-blowing video, in between scenes of a presumably coke-smuggling biplane transforming into a flying David Lee Roth
and some very un-provocative pole-dancing, is not the car named Panama.
Depending on which strain of Van Halen lore you subscribe to, “Panama”
is either the name of David Lee Roth’s 1969 Opel Kadett Caravan wagon or
a drag racer he saw named “Panama Express.” Or a stripper. Or maybe all
three.
Let's be honest. It doesn't surprise me when I watch all these reaction videos of black men and women totally digging this music. It is all inspired and are descended from black blues musicians that were responsible for Rock and Roll. I truly enjoy these videos, it is nice to watch people that are so open minded to listening.

The song was reportedly written about a car. In an interview with Howard Stern, lead singer David Lee Roth explained the meaning behind the song. Although the song features some suggestive lyrics, it is about a car that Roth saw race in Las Vegas; its name was "Panama Express", Roth wrote the song after being accused by a reporter of singing about only women, partying, and fast cars. He realized he'd never written a song about fast cars, and decided to write one

Eddie Van Halen, Greatest Guitar player of all Time. We lost him the same year the Greatest Drumer of all time (Neil Peart). Both died in 2020.
Eddie Van Halen (EVH) is known for his guitar mastery and transcendance, but underrated as a song writer.
IMO, they began their careers headed toward the moon! That ship blew past this tiny solar system and is still accelerating. Their early years with Dave Roth were good.
Their superior work was with Sammy Hagar.

Eddie is why there are 2 guitars sitting my basement as we speak. I actually stopped your video and got out mine to play along with this. This is one of my favorite songs of theirs to play. I absolutely love the breakdown solo after Eddie's main solo. Just silky smooth and catchy.

The song is about the "Panama EXPRESS", it is indeed a race car. "Hot shoe" is a reference to pushing the peddle to the metal, so to speak, driving fast. That being said, David Lee Roth also slips in a lot of sexual references.

All us car guys call our cars "she" or "her". The "whoosh" sound you hear during the breakdown in this song is Eddie's Ferrari revving up I believe.
It was his Lamborghini Miura. They backed it up to the rear studio doors and set up mics to capture it.

Van Halen was one of the Greatest Bands in Rock n Roll in the 1980's. You need to do a review on Van Halen's song 1984 JUMP. Awesome song to listen to and all the rest were #1's in my book. Grew up on this group. You guys got to hear the new new with Polyphia the musicianship is amazing. Especially the song Ego Death with Steve Via.
for those of us who were utes(cousin Vinnie not mormon trail) when this came out, the scene was the drag...every town had one, everyone went to it, and Van Halen was a huge hit on them, being played with everyone's car radio on as loud as it could get (this was either pre Pioneer Stereo equipment or just at the time where the price range wasn't built in for the common folks). The scene was Eruption followed by Running with the Devil without a commercial interruption just the silence in the track separation. It almost always was the intro into the Friday Night Rock N Roll Jam show to start the evening out right...everyone was either down on the drag or headed there when the Entro (Eruption+RwtD) started playing, and that was the time keeper, that was the start of the weekend celebration. Late 70's through most of the 80's was the perfect time to be alive and especially if you were a Utes old enough to drive or hang with those who could drive but not so old that life's responsibilities had you firmly in its claws.
When you do that reaction to Eruption or Running with the Devil...you absolutely must do them as a combo reaction all in one....to remotely get the understanding why they hit so hard when they came out...the vibe is different and the connection weaker when you attempt to do them separately and then try to imagine that bridge between them...nothing captures the 80's before Aides like old true Van Halen (no disrespects to the Van Hagar fans meant)...where Sex Drugs & Rock n Roll was hard, clean, and abundant (not necessarily in that order), and there was no wars, no major civil unrest and a booming economy for everyone.
