I came here because I know good drumming when I hear it. This particular isolated track captures the energy and Bonham-like precision of his style. I am little older, but the very first time I heard Rope, I immediately knew this was one of the most talented drummers alive. Taylor’s death is a great loss to the drumming community. May God bless you with eternal life and happiness, Taylor. The heavens will rock tonight!
Then maybe you yourself should take up drumming if you haven't already. A good ear is the number one essential a drummer must possess and you apparently have that. Do it for TAYLOR!!! LOL!!!!
The fact that this whole record was recorded on tape with a near-perfect tracking of the drums just makes listening to this more surreal. The world really lost a very talented drummer and musician. Rock in peace, Taylor Hawkins.
I think I enjoy the isolated drums more than I like the tune! Masterful, tight and badass!!! Being a life long fan and astute study of Neil , I immediately recognized the same bell-ride synco from Spirit of Radio, Subdivisions and YYZ. I was like, " the Foos are the best band alive....besides RUSH!!!" And this was before I realized the Foos had a new drummer!!! Thought it was Dave playing the drums then. Can you imagine the wonderful percussive chaos Neil and Tay are creating up there? God is going to need percocet to get rid of that headache!!! Tay became my drummer after Neil's death since he held Neil and Rush in such high regards. Both are so sorely missed and may they both Rock In Peace!
Been feeling compelled to seek this out. The symbol action is phenomenal, love it . The backbone of all good bands, foo fighters without Taylor Hawkins is like Queen without Freddy. Such a sad time 😢
@@Metympana That ride pattern is bolted on to the chorus rhythm? section from Subdivisions (listen to the isolated track at the 2 minute mark facebook.com/neilpeartfans/videos/829799530536878/). It’s a rare thing to be able to dance to an isolated drum track. Taylor put so much energy and feel into each song. That ride bell pattern for the chorus is something else. Miss the guy the band will never be the same without him. RIP ❤
It's been over 10 years since I listen to this song almost in a daily basis. Taylor without a doubt is one of the best drummers of the last 30 years and this isolated track proves it! It has tons of Groove! Punch! Musicality! Taste! there are tons of small details and ghost notes all over the track! a Real treasure for us fans of Taylor and drumming. R.I.Power Tailor!
@@creationofseda It's likely actually a Ludwig, you can see pics of a Ludwig kit set up in an interview with Dave and Butch Vig. Although they did change kits around for songs so there's no real way of knowing for sure.
This rocks like all get out!!!! Of all the local drummers I've ever witnessed trying to play a Rush track, Tay is the only drummer to 🔨 that bell-ride syncopation on the nuggets. Taylor was BORN a drummer. Doesnt happen like that anymore. He picked the best drummers in the world as his influences. Knew he was going places from the time I saw him playing with Alanis Morissette and didn't even realize he was the drummer for Foo Fighters until Wasting Light. Was an awesome surprise revelation to say the least. May he and Neil Peart Rock in Peace... Im sure Jesus is thinking about moving to a different neighborhood about now!
If you watch the Back and Forth documentary, it gives a in detail account of the recording of Wasting Light, with some videos from the recording as well.
He has this interesting way of stopping his drums in a segmented way. Any other person would make it sound like a mistake. I’d never do that, so that’s one of his unique ticks for me.
Sounds great! I made a recording today and had a difficult time. Drank a few beers and it affected my playing. Maybe time to quit? Taylor made a great recording and I will enjoy.
Enrique Formoso The pattern is rlrr lrrl rlrr lrrl between the ride bell and the snare with crotchet accents (beats 1, 2, 3 and 4). Although he actually plays RLRR L-R- RLRR LRRL where the dashes are quaver rests.
***** Sure, if you can do that then that's great The problem comes when you're not at a level where you can comfortably play something of this kind, in which case breaking it down and learning it can really help. Then it's in your repertoire and you can just use it to jam in future!
Does this sound like a drummer who is cozy in his playing? All those drummers who play all relaxed and playing fancy rudiments have it all wrong. If you aren’t playing like drums are the cure for a cancer that you might have, then you don’t get it.
I don't think there is and it's wrong in every cover I've seen. If you're willing to trust a guitarrist, I'm pretty sure he's playing: S t T K S+T K T S T K S+T ttttTT land. Where S = snare, t = small tom, K = kick, T = floor tom and S+T = flam between the two. Sorry for the weird notation. The fast roll in the end is probably small and medium toms, instead of floor tom, but you get the idea. I've listened to it slowly a bunch of times and played over it until I got it right and I'm pretty sure this is it.
Ahh, the song/album where Dave Grohl finally stopped forcing Taylor to play in the simplistic Grohl style. Same album where Dave relented and let the lead guitar player actually play leads.
Come on. We all know Dave never forced Taylor to do shit. Same thing with Chris. They all work TOGETHER. Not against each other. If Dave had tried to force Taylor or Chris to play his way, then they probably would've left a while ago.
@@ChickenFriedBrad Dave doesn't force Taylor to play certain stuff but he does give him pretty specific instructions on what to do, there's an interview with Taylor where he talks about it. It's nothing draconian but he does get Taylor to play with a lot more DG style than he would otherwise.
@@thomaskennydrums That is definitely true for certain tracks, but Taylor doesn't seem to have a problem with it. Sure, Dave will give Taylor outlines of what he thinks would sound good. But that's what every band does. They communicate with each other. And considering the fact that they're both drummers, I'm sure they're more than happy to build off of each other's ideas. It's certainly not a one-sided tyrannical situation like the dude above me made it out to be.
There's a reason why Dave hired Taylor, who was at the time a session musician. That's because session musicians don't ask questions and play what they're given. You're right, this song is very unlike Dave Grohls style of drumming, particularly the ride/bell pattern.

I agree. This is my favorite drum track from Foo Fighters, along with Everlong and The Pretender.
