Like Imentionedin my previous reply, the result is decided by the author, not by the reader of the sentence. If the author only meant that the birds left at some point in the past, the simple past is fine. If, however, a result was highlighted by the author, then the present perfect would be used. For example: The seeds she left on the windowsill for the birds are still there. The birds have flown south for the winter. The birds have left, so they haven't eaten the seeds. Does it make sense?

Whenever there's a time marker, the present perfect cannot be used. Moreover, you must realize that the focus on the present result is decided by the author, not by the reader. In this case, the author simply wanted to focus on the fact that the leaves fell in autumn, not on the fact that the leaves are on the ground and that he has to clean up his backyard.
