I have heard 2 different stories about this film.
One is this & the other is:
Tinu Anand & Amitabh Bachchan were friends, once Tinu Anand decided to direct Duniya Meri Jeb Mein, he gave Amitabh Bachchan the elder brother role & Shashi Kapoor the younger brother role (which has done by Rishi Kapoor). He narrates the story of this film to Amitabh Bachchan. Amitabh immediately told to Tinu Anand that he has no interest in this character & also said him to give up this script because indian audience wouldn't accept that a lead character become fully handicapped. Then Tinu Anand convinced Amitabh to explain that, in Sholay, the character Thakur Baldev Singh was shown his hand chopped off. Amitabh Bachchan told Tinu Anand that, it's not necessary that Sholay theme would be repeated. Co-incidentally, Tinu Anand had one more project "Kaalia" on the same time. Amitabh Bachchan suggested that this is more effective for his career & he immediately signed.
So, Duniya Meri Jeb Mein started at last with Shashi Kapoor & Rishi Kapoor. Tinu Anand wanted the then rising actor Amrish Puri as villain, but he hiked more prices, which Tinu & Bittu Anand was unable to pay. So they replaced Amrish Puri with Ranjeet.

Bhaesaab, vinod Khanna and Dharmendra , and Feroz Khan sahab were the most Handsome actor’s of Indian film Industry.
Amitabh has come a long way, but he was lucky that after 16-17 flops he was in the industry as Vinod Khanna left for Osho.
Amitabh is my favourite but if you talk about Handsome heroes then I won’t count Amitabh in them.

Rishi Kapoor was right about Amitabh Bachchan NOT sharing credit with co-stars.
Popularity of all of Amitabh Bachchan's movies from "Anand" to current depend on contrasting characters in movies.
In his very first movie "Anand" it was Rajesh Khanna in central role and Amitabh Bachchan and Ramesh Deo and Deo's real life wife Seema as co-stars. Somehow they never got their credit.
In many other movies it was Pran and other good actors.

I don’t think even Amitabh’s presence would have changed the film’s destiny to be average financially. I think showing shashi as a double amputee didn’t appeal to the masses which was the reason the film didn’t do well despite a good star cast.

The kind of parallel success both the kapoors and Bachchan enjoyed in the 70’s was incredible ! AB was and till date is a very professional actor to the core , he stayed so focused in his work that he moved way ahead than his all other co-stars. Along the way he may have forgotten that a movie is team effort of all actors and could have missed showing enough gratitude to the right people.
