I also have many fond memories of this game. It was very fun, very playable. Before this game I was of the belief that a S3 Trio 64 was all the video card a PC needed. After I saw a friend play this I went right out and bought by first 3dfx Voodoo graphics card. I'd love to see this game remastered in 4k using modern ray tracing graphics. It would be such a beauty to play.

I think they are making a huge mistake, and ignoring a major target market. I think older men would play these games for hours at a time. My other theory is the government needs young men to join the Marines and Army so you get games like Call of Duty as a form of encouragement.
In the Dos's time there were so many simulator games with the good balance between simulation and nice gameplay. For example, made by Digital Image Design and published by Ocean Software TFX/EF2000/F-22 ADF series, or Jane's Longbow/ATF/Navy Fighters series and, of course, Strike Commander from Origin and many others. But now we have mostly either arcade games such as Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X. which are too primitive to play, or strong simulator games such as Falcon 4.0 Allied Force which are too boring to get fun and not playable without joystick. Even Jane's has its own primitive JASF: Jane's Advanced Strike Fighters. But I may be wrong and absolutely incorrect with broken English.
I've managed to get it up and running again on my new Ryzen 5 PC, wasn't an issue - its really impressive in terms of having a clickable virtual cockpit, every button works, and actually being very satisfying to play - with a tiny HDD footprint. Amazing it works so well even today. Good fun even now.

I remember this really well from about 1998. Someone gave me a copy from Thailand but it had no instructions. It took months to work out. I loved this game. The flight model was particularly satisfying. It imparted the large mass of the F-15 very nicely if I recall. When it was loaded with bombs, rockets and fuel the AOA during cruise was modeled very well. The rate of roll was much less responsive and required much more joystick input, the bleed off of speed in sustained turns was alarming and high speed stall was something you really needed to avoid. I love the way AI enemy aircraft or SA missiles would force you to jettison stores to stay alive. The co pilot was very funny at times BOOM, Boom - out go the lights, Shack, That was Stoopid, What the Hell is wrong with you? I used to set up a scenario where I was in the mountains of Iran at dawn or dusk with bombs (perhaps Durandals), 2x Aim 9's and 2x AIM 20 and a centreline fuel tank. The terrain following radar would be on and the speed would be 380-400KIAS. It was a loaded configuration as if I was going to destroy a newly built runway discovered by satellite intelligence for example. 3 or 4 Iranian F-14's would then jump me from 10000ft above. I'd have to act decisively to survive. The order in which I prioritized determined life or death. Try the scenario out. Your heart will pump hard.

I use a glide wrapper (zeckensacks glide wrapper) with the "Try high res"option, this option will double the standard resolution=640x480 to 1280x960 :-)
Xbox? PlayStation? No. This computer simulation was the best. I still play Jane's. F15 Strike Eagle, Fighter's Anthology, Fleet Command & Jane's SSI Hunter Killer. Realistic simulations. Not that Mickey Mouse arcade stuff.
The only upgrade is the resolution that was doubled by a glide wrapper 640x480 to 1280x960,you can now use Nglide to do that in the option set the resolution to 1280x960
