    I’ve never been a dancer, but do a considerable amount of hand sewing. I highly recommend getting a thimble instead of using the theraband. A lot of people think the purpose of a thimble is to keep from pricking your fingers, but they’re actually for helping push the needle through, and it’s a lot easier on your hands than having to grip the needle so tightly.

    Additional Darning Tips!
    - You can use either cotton yarn (don’t use acrylic it’s too squishy) or thin rope made for macramé to bulk up my shoes when darning.
    - Jet glue the darning if you want it to be hard like your pointe shoe and last much longer! although make sure you rub the darning on concrete so it’s smooth!
    - Using a awl will save your fingers, time and needles! I never have broken a needle or had a hard time getting one through bc i use a awl before I darn!

It's amazing all the work that you awesome artists put into your shoes to get them just right! I admire ballerinas so much for your dedication to your art. This video AMAZING!!! Could u go into more depth on how u darn, like where you put the stitching. What does the stitching on the side of the shoe do? Does it taper the shoe or help with twisting or make your feet look prettier?
    U seem very knowledgeable and I was wondering if you knew anything about baking freed point shoes?

    • @the_muse
      @the_muse  2 года назад

      So glad you enjoyed it! For sure I can explain a bit further :)
      When I’m darning I try to follow the shape of the platform generally, so right on the “corner” of the platform, piercing right on the edge. But as I explained in the video, sometimes I go more onto the top of the platform with stitches to add bulk, which can push your foot into a better spot on pointe or correct any flaws with the shoe platform (freeds especially can have very rounded or even bumpy boxes). If you want a wider platform (easier to balance on) you can stitch mostly on the outside of the edge so the darning adds to the diameter of the platform.

    • @the_muse
      @the_muse  2 года назад

      The side stitching (aka frankensteining) is mostly aesthetic for me, because I like a lower cut shoe to show more of my foot. But I have heard people also do it to tighten up the heel if your heel slips off. I am no expert, this is all just stuff I’ve figured out or heard of from other dancers and RUclips videos that I use myself and have found helpful :)

    • @the_muse
      @the_muse  2 года назад

      No idea about baking shoes, but I have left my shoes out in direct sunlight a few times before and it definitely hardens them up a little bit! A lot of time removing moisture keeps the wood and cardboard and glue in tact which is why it is so good to rotate the shoes you are wearing to make them last super long. I am still wearing the pair I demonstrated on in this video (which I filmed around may and through summer), rotating that pair with 4 others daily or even switching between classes and rehearsals
      Hope this helps! More questions welcomed!

    I have a question!! This is a great video by the way. When i'm wearing my pointe shoes and I go through demi-pointe I notice a lot of extra fabric right above my box. It makes a bit of a gap (two little gaps on each side of the shoe). Everything else seems fine but I was just wondering if this was normal?

    • @the_muse
      @the_muse  2 года назад +2

      I can't see your shoes, so definitely check with your teacher as well, but I can say that for me there is always a little gapping on the sides of the shoe when I go through the demi pointe. What you are describing sounds pretty normal :) This can be minimized by pulling the drawstring of your shoe and tying it tight (but not too tight, you don't want to cause discomfort, I have made this mistake before!) Also, I use the frankenstein technique I showed in this video to get rid of the excess fabric on the sides of the shoe, which as a result also gets rid of a lot of that gap. This is purely for aesthetic reasons though, and it is really not necessary! I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions!

    Does the seamless Frankenstein help the shoes not slip off the heel? Or does it just make it look nicer

    • @the_muse
      @the_muse  2 года назад

      It can help with that! It cinches in the extra fabric on the sides which can make the heel tighter. I have also heard from other dancers that it helps a lot if you have narrow heels and have issues with the shoe slipping off. But I mostly do it for aesthetic reasons.

    • @the_muse
      @the_muse  2 года назад

      If your heels slip off a lot then what I also do is pull my convertible tights up off your heel to have just a little bit of your skin touching the shoe in the back. If you have a strict dress code you can do this so that you don’t even see any skin peeking out of the shoe, but you still have the grippy-ness of the shoe against skin instead of the slippery tights.

    Hi, I have an important question. Yesterday we were doing demi plies with arms in first position. And I noticed that I don‘t know how far I have to go down the demi plies.
    My ballet friend told me that there is an easy rule: You really have to go as far down as possible without lifting your feet from the ground.
    Is that rule right? Because when I follow this rule I have the feeling that I am way to deep in my demi plie.
    Pleasee help!
    Ps: Sorry for my english mistakes. I am from germany.

    • @the_muse
      @the_muse  2 года назад

      Hi! I would definitely take this question to your dance teacher or instructor, since they can see your plie and be able to give you their professional opinion. Generally though, your friend has the right idea. If you were born with very long Achilles tendons then you may have a very deep plie and you might not need to go that all the way to your maximum plie all the time, but since I can't see you I don't know if that's the case.

    What is the difference between shellac and jet glue?

    • @the_muse
      @the_muse  2 года назад +4

      They are similar in the sense that they both harden the shoe but they work best for different purposes. Jet glue is super strong and will make the place you apply it to completely solid. So it is very useful for the tip of the box or targeting a specific part of the shank. However, I would not apply it to the wings of the shoe or anywhere that you want to be pliable. Shellac is better for this since it reinforces the glue in the shoe but is still pliable after application. It can be applied generously in the entire box and the shank without making your shoe a solid brick.

      ok i changed my mind, maybe after enough photoshoots, they will die and i will need to resurect them from their death at some point. also don't come at me, im aware that wearing pointe shoes without ballet training is dangerous, I just think they look cool and i kinda collect dance shoes. my feet are strong and flexible enough that i can walk and do small jums on pointe for a small period of time, so i use them in photos sometimes.

    Ballet causes an extreme waste of beautiful shiny satin fabric which should be made to be worn as clothing and not as some shoe temporarily unless they made the shoes to last longer at least 3 years of 4 years as for me that's one reason why I can't stand ballet

      Oh no don't worry this is not beautiful satin this is cheap polyester thin satin satin and only the out layer, the "heavy" construction is tight cardboard and paper paste. The satin is not the main component actually, even fabric wise it's mainly a thick cotton canvas 😊

      @@dovelugosi thank you for your comment but I do want to point out that I love polyester satin with all my heart ever since the 1980s I'm 51 years old and I remember the most beautiful satin that is polyester satin is not cheap it is good remember beauty is in the eyes of the beholder

    I’m not sure exactly how the RUclips algorithm works, but I’m hoping that interacting with this vid will boost it because this is SO well done!!! This is the type of video I would expect from a large RUclips creator, and I can definitely see your channel going places with this absolutely amazing quality
