Limiting access to materials inappropriate for children is not "banning books! These materials are available in public libraries, online, and book stores. If parents wish to allow their children access to this material, they can do so. No one is burning books nor are they burning book publishing houses! But, making these materials available in schools indicates that the school approves of the content and encourages students to engage in the activities described.

I can turn my TV off or change the channel if I feel the material isn't age appropriate. I'm NOT at school when my kids are there. I can't follow them into the library to see what books they might be reading. I have to trust the school officials to ensure that what my kids are exposed to is age appropriate. However, I'm not going to blindly trust them. I want to know what's in the library and what is a part of the school curriculum. Keeping that from me will ultimately create a rift between me and my children, with the school system aligned with the kids against me, expanded to being between kids and school against the parents.
Also, the PG gives me an indication that I might not want my kids to see it and that I should look a little closer at the material before I make a decision on whether to allow my kids to watch these programs or not.

Mein Kampf should be available. It actually is historic. It tells the story of a mad man. We have had these leaders in this world throughout history. Young people need to know how the world really is, not the g rated one. I do think that a child should be a certain age to understand the book. I don't think a 3rd grader would be able to comprehend what is in the book. Certainly high school students should be able to understand the book.

Nadine Farid Johnson's comments "as a parent" are completely inappropriate in this setting. If she wants to make comments "as a parent" she should do that to her local school board and not at a congressional hearing. I'm assuming she was called to testify as an "expert witness", or someone with a deeper understanding of the topic at hand and not "as a parent". Stop mixing your personal life/beliefs with your professional life/beliefs. If all that was required was a "parents opinion" they could have chosen from the millions of parents with school aged children in the country but they didn't, she was chosen for other reasons.

This is completely backwards. The collective wisdom of parents IS the highest "expertise" possible on this topic. So-called credentials muddy the waters.
The notion that you can (or should) separate your personal beliefs from public life is completely absurd and impossible. If you have a cohesive worldview, it extends to every arena of your life.

People today have no common sense teaching our children today what should never be taught in the first place . There should be no problem knowing these books are not fit to be in our schools . Get rid of those disgusting books of teaching our children have went to there parents complaining the parents tried to read the book in front of the school board and refuse to have it read to them . That right there proves how demented and repulsive the writers were gay and never left anything to the imagination .
