It’s almost like one political side wants to deliberately conflate age-restricting books with banning books.
How many of these hated books get checked out of school libraries? I think that might be a relevant question.

Have you been in the hallway between classes in Middle School recently? You’ll find their language far worse than apparently you know. Thing is…they have no idea of most of what they’re spewing…it’s just stuff they’ve heard at home.
@@rathertiredofthemess2841 Don't care. They shouldn't be told that language is acceptable.

Limiting access to materials inappropriate for children is not "banning books! These materials are available in public libraries, online, and book stores. If parents wish to allow their children access to this material, they can do so. No one is burning books nor are they burning book publishing houses! But, making these materials available in schools indicates that the school approves of the content and encourages students to engage in the activities described.
This reasoning should then also be extrapolated to TV and movies, not? Making these films, show that the makers approve the content? Or showing these movies demonstrates approval of content. Do movies encourage behavior. Just put a PG on the cover then...
@@TheDJanssen Except gay sex is NOT “PG.”
@@TheDJanssen
I can turn my TV off or change the channel if I feel the material isn't age appropriate. I'm NOT at school when my kids are there. I can't follow them into the library to see what books they might be reading. I have to trust the school officials to ensure that what my kids are exposed to is age appropriate. However, I'm not going to blindly trust them. I want to know what's in the library and what is a part of the school curriculum. Keeping that from me will ultimately create a rift between me and my children, with the school system aligned with the kids against me, expanded to being between kids and school against the parents.
Also, the PG gives me an indication that I might not want my kids to see it and that I should look a little closer at the material before I make a decision on whether to allow my kids to watch these programs or not.
@@TheDJanssen ...they are not pg content more related to x-rated novels.......
@@TheDJanssen More mental gymnastics, a parent should decide to censor channels or block pg and above for their children.
No school has a right to have those books available to anyone's children
Parents are perfectly capable of obtaining book not age appropriate for their own children. That’s not the case with school libraries nor should it be.
@B N some good points, there.
The books aren't banned. If you want to check them out go to a public library.
Absolutely correct. If a deranged parent wants their children to be exposed to such drivel, and they can't find it in the elementary school library, they can always go to the public library or order it online.
It's the left playing fast and loose with language. Like the redefined term for racism, woman and gender et al
Or they can buy them themselves

In my state of Arkansas, Republicans just passed a bill making it a crime of librarians to allow anyone (including adults) to check out any books that the Republican Party finds "objectionable". That's not banning books, but it's possibly worse and is 100% meant to cause librarians to live in fear of reprisal. That sounds a LOT like religious/political terrorism to me.
Kevin Kiley needs to run for CA governor

See, this is the Left in a nutshell. “Mein Kampf” is a massively important historical work. It’s essential for understanding Adolf Hitler and the causes of WWII. Students should be allowed to read that, Das Kapital, and any other written work which is not porn. Age appropriate material is one thing-but gay porn is quite another.
I would agree with you, BUT. They aren't teaching the causes for WWll anymore in schools. They are teaching children what they should be or what Teachers want them to be. CRT and other crap that won't do children any good in life or Jobs. There are way to many people in College that don't know basic knowledge of WWll. They don't know who fought in WWll or which Countries were aligned to fight the war.
Read Mein Kampf. It is EXACTLY what is happening to America today.
Not Elementary students. Elementary students do NOT have the mental capacity to study what people believe and to look at it from an analytical point of view. These books should be reserved for high schoolers who are well versed in the harms these ideologies manifested.
Dems don't want it made available because anyone paying attention to the way Dems operate being very closely aligned to how Hitler operated.

How about the parents who want their children to have access to inappropriate books buy them and have their own children read at home. It doesn’t take a professional to have the common senses to know what is appropriate for young children !!
Honestly that shouldn't even be allowed. If you knowingly expose your child to pornography, you should be locked up.
@@SeraphsWitnessDo you believe David statutes on lawns be banned?
You are assuming kids are stupid. If they are not exposed to works of art, books or discussion or debates in school, then you are delaying their social, mental and thoughts process and skills. Learning empathy, diversity and free thinking is not a crime.
@@fwscfemalewhiteseniorcitiz3711 For children, yes, their access to books should be (and is) limited. We teach kids progressively. We don't give them immediate access to all information. There is no room for that kind of educational theory. That's not how you teach kids. Or anyone, really. You teach them in phases. Explain things in the simplest easiest terms first, then slowly expose them to the darkness of the world.
You don't show them porn in 3rd grade.
As a retired teacher/administrator of 34+ years I am appalled, disgusted, and embarrassed that current teachers , administrators and basically the entire democratic party believe that parents don't have a right to know what is being taught and when
Each teacher and school administrator should/must provide a syllabus and be transparent .
I used to tell the teachers I supervised that the units of instruction, assignments and timeline should be posted on their class website. Including any films or reading materials .

A better question should have been...WHY is Wm Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice" banned in High Schools ?
Great to see Kevin in Congress!
I love how people like this have their political answers at the ready, " WE DON'T AGREE WITH BANNING BOOKS, EVERYONE HAS ACCESS TO THESE KIND OF BOOKS THROUGH THEIR PUBLIC LIBRARIES ", Yet, they think that they are the arbitrary decision makers for what should be taught to children in school!
How about we take political indoctrination out of schools and start teaching kids reading, writing, economics, balancing a checkbook, and necessary life skills!!
Meanwhile, the department of justice locking up the adults for thought crimes.
I do not believe that any child in grade school even thinks about gender identity!
Not unless it involves the life of a classmate or that classmate’s parents. Most of these books are not in grade schools.
They don't in elementary school unless it is pushed on them. I'm a damn school nurse in an elementary school in Illinois FFS now the junior high is a whole other story unfortunately
Not unless you have teachers shoving it into their class room. The books aren’t being banned, and when it’s clarified that they are simply age restricted, the argument shifts to “most of these books are not in grade schools”.

@@jenni0278 Nah. This is the whole "talking about gay people makes you gay" all over again. It doesn't. Being made aware that transgenderism simply exists, which is all that might happen at that level, is not going to turn someone trans.
I LOVE IT when they do a little side step. If I throw enough words in the air. I'll confuse the issue.
A book is not banned if you can purchase it yourself legally and share it with your children if you deem it appropriate for them.
Parents as a group also have every right to determine what is appropriate for schools to teach their children. Including materials used for teaching.
Just because you are partial to rainbow colors and alphabet groups does not give you the right to groom other people's children and then complain when parents protect their children.
Is it not grooming children by putting them into a sterilized environment because a parent believes her child is not mature enough to see David, Madonna with child, and believe the kids associate rainbows with Trans, LBQTS+ based on parents prejudices, Karen's of the world.
I imagine these parents believe in the partially recognized 2nd amendment and ok with schools shootings, but heaven forbid they are exposed to diversity, acceptance and empathy.
Groom? You caught us and hampered our ability to recruit. You smart people, you!
How do these people get elected into office? We really need better candidates on both sides of the aisle.
Removing explicit content and uneducational books is not censorship its moral responsibility
"thank you for the question"
always 'thank you for the question"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How much extracurricular resources do you need to teach children how to read, write and numerate.? These are adult issues which most children have little interest in and lack the worldliness to reject as inappropriate. This is tantamount to grooming.
Am getting this right, it's ok for her to ban certain books to certain age groups but not others, but "she's no expert she just a parent"?, it's hard to follow Democrat logic.
The problem with the definition of "Book ban" that is being used is that it assumes the original decision of making the book available was always the correct one. So an age inappropriate book is put in the libraries and that's okay, it's the removal that is a "book ban".
I have great trouble with the idea that those who made the original decision are assumed to be infallible.
"thank you for your question, that I'm not going to answer"
How about a book by Richard Spencer that promoted white supremacy? Would the left try to "ban" that? How about one by John MacArthur that said homosexuality was sin? Or one by an advocate of traditional marriage? Or one that said being fat was not healthy? Or that there's just two "genders"?
All kinds of books would get the dander up of somebody. Which books don't make the cut should be something the majority of parents decide.
This guy’s questions are perfect. I’m impressed
Distribution of pornography to children is a crime
How many of the school libraries allow the Bible in them? Or a book on a standard family of 1 man 1 woman and kids? Or the benefits of having a stay at home mom or father? Or that the founding fathers wanted to eliminate slavery before the founding of the country?
You will not find these books in any school library run by the government. Why is it okay to ban books like this but not okay to ban gender queer?
If a school library is going to have “The Communist Manifesto” in it then “The Gulag Archipelago” should be directly beside it on the shelf.
Whenever a witness says, “Thank you for the question,” they should be kicked out of the hearing.
I read Mein Kampf in college as assigned reading for the course. In elementary school, we read "The Gulag Archipelago" by Solzhenitsyn. They need to bring that back into the classrooms.
Agreed. Those that fail to learn from history are condemned by fate to repeat it.
Keep nasty self centered adults out of leadership roles in the schools so then children won't have to deal with Chao's and Confusion embedded in so many schools and maybe so many kids won't need therapy trying to figure out if they should listen to the school or their own family,it's like putting a child in trauma like as bad as a parents divorce
She doesn't want parents or the government to have a say in what books are available, but somehow it's fine if this is decided with "frameworks" or by publishers. Why is that better?
Question: What's the difference between a red heifer, a Christian, and a Jew?
Answer: Only the heifer deserves to live.
Controlling what books are in public K12 schools is not book banning or book burning. When the public libraries can't carry a book and publishers are forced to not publish that book then THAT is a book ban.
Teachers are like every other group of humans, there are some great ones, some good ones, tons of mediocre ones, some bad ones, a few horrible ones.
"Book banning" is just one of those phrases like like to use because it riles up their base. No parent in their right mind thinks kids should have access to LITERALLY ALL BOOKS in school. That's insane.
Ruby Bridges Goes to School was rated for 2nd grade and parents want it removed.
@@eldorfthe_wise129 If parents want something removed, then so be it. I don't care if it's Elmo or Winnie the Pooh. Parents are the final arbiters of their children's education.
@@SeraphsWitness And history loses. Knowledge looses.
Some years back (a few hundred, to be exact) they wanted to ban a book called about The Copernican Theory. Just think of where we'd be if that book hadn't managed to survive the book banning back then? You could have been burned at the stake for having a copy of it. Without it we'd still be trying to figure out why some planets go into retrograde.
Right now, teachers are afraid to have ANY books on the shelves. SOME stupid idiot will find something wrong with some book and then the teacher could be fired.
If ignorant people manage to ban books, we'll all end up as ignorant of the world as they are. I'll take knowledge, thank you.
This lady has some nerve
Whatever the “Frame work” is for age appropriate material is, it’s NOT WORKING!
She’s a really good witness.
Why is the GOP Congress wasting money and time, when this can be accomplished at face to face school levels by concerned parents and teachers. One size does not fit all.
When government gets involved, no one is happy.
Tell them to deal with real issues, like gun control, child marriages, child labour, school shootings, debt ceiling and climate control for examples.
You are being played by GOP distracting you, so they don't have to deal with doing their job.
We managed for years and survived the education system. As parents, its our job to be involved, recognize changes or behaviours. When did government intervention or interference become co- parenting?
Good question very poor answer.
If I was a teacher, I would have made my students read “Mein kampf”, during the lockdowns. GUESS WHY

We should remove the book that recommends removing books.
These books need to be age appropriate in content and words. Tom Sawyer and other books have been banned.

Putting an inappropriate book in a school is destructive. Removing an inappropriate book from a school is a moral thing that should obviously be done.

Mein Kampf should be available. It actually is historic. It tells the story of a mad man. We have had these leaders in this world throughout history. Young people need to know how the world really is, not the g rated one. I do think that a child should be a certain age to understand the book. I don't think a 3rd grader would be able to comprehend what is in the book. Certainly high school students should be able to understand the book.

Nadine Farid Johnson's comments "as a parent" are completely inappropriate in this setting. If she wants to make comments "as a parent" she should do that to her local school board and not at a congressional hearing. I'm assuming she was called to testify as an "expert witness", or someone with a deeper understanding of the topic at hand and not "as a parent". Stop mixing your personal life/beliefs with your professional life/beliefs. If all that was required was a "parents opinion" they could have chosen from the millions of parents with school aged children in the country but they didn't, she was chosen for other reasons.
This is completely backwards. The collective wisdom of parents IS the highest "expertise" possible on this topic. So-called credentials muddy the waters.
The notion that you can (or should) separate your personal beliefs from public life is completely absurd and impossible. If you have a cohesive worldview, it extends to every arena of your life.
Too stupid are our public schools especially in CA.

And yet I bet a buck she would approve the policy of removing certain books because, as an example, Huck Finn said the N word, or is deemed fatphobic or other made up standard by the nutballs.
