I've often considered that the definition of life is to rise and to fall. to change and to be immortal is to never change. To have a body that doesn't react to poison, to force, to not having enough nutrients or water. A body that doesn't fight viruses, but isn't affected by viruses to begin with. Immortal in my eyes is to become a force of unchanging personified. And part of me wonders if being immortal should mean little more than being a statue for all of time or go into an existence where you literally cannot be perceived.
im loving the "sending your consciousness back in time" thing like imagine you're working as a waiter at a restaurant and you say "enjoy your meal!" and they say "you too!" followed by a look of pure grief then they just immediately lose consciousness
Matt Davies Fun fact: most arthritus is rheumatoid Arthritis, which is a genetically inherited autoimmune disorder, and the other is a degenerative disease wearing down on your joints and making your bones more brittle and stuff, so unless you're literally stretching them too far and cause yourself injury, overuse of your joints and stuff can't really cause arthritis unless you're super unlucky. Neither does cracking your knuckles, so you can do that all you want.
"Scythe" is such a good book. It describes a lot of the existential ideas presented in this idea and how the human race would change and adapt to the inability to die. Great read, for anyone who is interested.

Based on an equation that calculates the number of relatively advanced civilizations that we should be able to see, the number is conservatively 20 or so I believe. Forget the equation name but related is the Fermi paradox that questions why we haven't. Some speculations have been made to answer this, one of which is that there are great barriers for civilizations to overcome and if you estimate 50 percent of civilizations pass a barrier, you end up around a .01 percent chance for a civilization to survive to around where we are I believe. Those numbers and timeline might be a bit off caused I haven't looked at it for a while.
The simulation theory is based on if technology reaches a point that we can replicate the universe as a simulation then there's almost no chance we are the first to do so pretty much
Saw the chat talking about the Scythe trilogy by Neal Shusterman when you were talking about becoming immortal as a society and the laws that would come into play then. That trilogy is brilliant on that subject, also just great dystopia
So here is the simulation hypothesis : A version of the simulation hypothesis was first theorized as a part of a philosophical argument on the part of René Descartes, and later by Hans Moravec. The philosopher Nick Bostrom developed an expanded argument examining the probability of our reality being a simulation. The reasoning behind us being in a simulation is that after humans have reached a certain point of advancement, they make a simulation of everything around them. And after that simulation has reached that point, there will be a simulation made withing that simulation, and eventually we create more simulations. So each simulation has more than one, sorta like a parallel universe. These simulations could stretch infinitely. Another expansion of the simulation hypothesis is that all human-like civilizations in the universe go extinct before they develop the technological capacity to create simulated realities; 2) if any civilizations do reach this phase of technological maturity, none of them will bother to run simulations; or 3) advanced civilizations would have the ability to create many, many simulations, and that means there are far more simulated worlds than non-simulated ones. We must assume that one of these is true. Which means that any civilization, whether it be human or alien, if they make a simulation, paragraph two and three must be true. With this massive amount of potential for simulations, many believe that we live in one. Elon Musk thinks its about an 80% chance we do, and the guy who made the theory believes its about a 10% chance.
12:15 The book Sythe goes into this concept! It talks about how death is basically stopped, but there’s a career about basically killing people so the world doesn’t overpopulate
the simulation argument goes like this: there is a high chance that at some point we will build multiple simulations of universes to model systems, given a complex enough simulation it is possible for life to develop in one and intern do multiple simulaitons excetra, thus more simulated universes will exist than real ones so in any given universe you are more likely to be in a simulated universe than a real universe. Combine that with the unreasonable mathematical consistency that physics shows and there is a "high" probability the universe is simulated
btw the argument for us being in a simulation: If there exists a way to make a simulation of the world that is perfect (A rather big if) then there would be more simulated worlds then real ones, and therefore we are more likely to be in a simulated world then a Real one.
@@pozatat If you can make a simulation that is perfect (again notice the IF) then the odds are we would have to be in a simulation, because if simiulations were perfect you could make lots of them and test everything you wanted, meaning that we would be more likely to be in a simulated world then a real one.

even though i couldn't catch the whole stream, i'm glad i was there for the more important part: the existential crisis. congrats ant, well deserved!!!!
Your talk about if there was no risk of dying, and some form of population control reminded me of a book series about that exact thing. Arc of a Scythe is a book series where there is almost no risk of dying, unless you are chosen to be killed by a Scythe, which is their form of population control.
Or just in General having an Overall control of your sleep, like being able to control if, how long, how deep and stuff while also having lucid dreams everytime. I Know you can control it a bit with alarm clocks and stuff but I mean a perfect control.
I don't know why, but a few minutes before you started talking about travelling back in time to change a decision you make, I was just thinking about it. That is freaky.

when I was little I thought when people said “cupboard” they were saying “covered” so that’s what I called the cupboard for the first like 10 years of my life ...that’s one year off from being half of my life nice
The chat and Smallant: Are other consciousnesses real? Are we living in a simulation? Is there life on other planets? What even is life? Would immortality be considered "alive"? Mario: Mamma mia, let's-a go through the food land! Wahoo!
The idea behind the living in a simulation thing is that eventually the people in the simulation will make their own simulations, and you’d end up with hundreds or thousands of simulations and only one real world
14:05 but with that ability, sending your conciousness back in time doesnt reverse whatever happened in the present before you time traveled, it just creates an alternate universe and leaves the past universe in the state you left it. Therefore, if you got into a bad car accident and traveled back in time, a past version of yourself is still in the car, suffering (idea from Rick and Morty)
Statistically speaking, humans tend to have less children when they are in a safer environment. For example, people in the 1700 and 1800s thought it as mostly normal to have 10 kids or so, considering that some or most of them would probably die as a child. Nowadays most families consist of 2 to 5 children, (at least in modern countries). This is theorized to be because parents find it more likely that their bloodline will continue even with few children, therefore they instinctively want less. If people had the capability to live forever, then I'm sure that in itself would be enough to stop overpopulation. Edit: haha, you literally said almost the same exact thing five seconds after I unpauswd the video after typing this
Not only that, but people tend to have better education in more developed countries/access to birth control methods that people in the 18th century didn't have
I finally caught a Smallant1 stream today. He spent over two hours trying to get a world record on Super Mario Odyssey with 10 captures while using both his hands and his feet. Great entertainer he is!
I really like how ant just casually play with hands and legs, while getting wr and talking about life on planets and superpowers from genie of the lamp
On the subject of all your toys turning on, I think what’s more likely is that your toys had an idle timer built in. Most toys are equipped to enter low power mode if you stop playing with them, but forget to turn them off. When the power surged, it probably generated a small EMP that reset all your toys.
My preferred pick would be the manipulation of the flow of time globally or in certain visible spaces. It basically gives you all the other superpowers. Teleportation: freeze time and move somewhere else. The downside is that you can't see where you're going since light won't enter your eyes, but as long as you're clever it should work. Another option is to freeze time around all the people around you (those people would turn invisible, however) Telekinesis: create massive vacuums to move objects. If you slow down time in a certain space, the particles will be physically slowed down and you can make an air current with that. Very hard to accomplish but possible. Flying can use this same mechanism. Turning invisible: basically you go blind to make yourself invisible temporarily by freezing time around you or just slowing it down significantly. You'll end up not receiving light waves for a while. Of course, another option is to slow down time for your targets and they'll be done for Also, you can just use the power directly. Slow down the time in the outside world and you can do whatever you want. For Internet-related things it'd be impossible, however, because it relies on unknown routers in unknown locations. Also, thanks to special relativity, you can utilize space contraction by speeding up time around you. That also reminds me: slowing down time around you will make you look like a speedy skinny boi although... this power would blow up instantly and tear a whole in yourself
The simulation thing goes like: At the rate technology is currently growing, we will probably at some point be able to perfectly simulate the universe.
