      *Engineering Department wears red and Command wears gold* I see what you did there, and I like it! While I don't like making comparisons to major franchises too often for impressive projects like this, I can't help but feel this game would be *the* game for those of us who want something akin to Star Trek, but with an actual focus on exploration and not just combat or dramatic storylines. I'll be keeping a very close eye on this going forward.

      Will this game have a traditional release or are you going to early access an incomplete game and then NEVER finish it like the never ending demo that is Star Citizen? Because if so, no thanks. If this game gets a complete release on launch (albeit updates/etc.) then I’ll be interested. However, without VR at launch, not so much.

    I think that there are many of us who, being fans of video games about spaceships for many decades, have always missed that pure exploration that some games like Elite Dangerous let us do but never fully developed. Many of us prefer "to explore strange new worlds; to seek out new life and new civilizations; to boldly go where no man has gone before..." than simple space combat. I'm not lying to you if I tell you that what you offer us is what many of us have been wanting almost since we were children, to feel like Scotty, La Forge, Picard or Janeway. Best of luck with the project and keep up the excellent work you are doing. Of course you can count on my support on the Kickstarter. I think the project deserves it

    • @mavor101
      @mavor101 2 месяца назад +9

      The problem with multiplayer exploration games is that you need *extremely massive* amounts of content, which is a never-ending budget burner in most games. Procedural systems can help somewhat, but if you want players to *truly* come across new things (ie. exploration), the amount of work required is just unbelievably huge. Take a look at NMS and how long they have been working at it, and where they are now.

      @@mavor101 If a really good base framework is in place, the community come in an create new content in the years to come, so much in fact that you may not even be able to consume all of this. Just look the mod scene for Skyrim. I really don't like "procedurally generated content", that's just another expression for "randomly generated stuff", just a in a more sophisticated way with rules and limits in place. It's great to add to an existing manually build world and also as a temporary filler but never as the main content to "explore".

Maybe you're one of the Engineers mates aboard and the most exciting thing about your day is you're pulling into port for a refuel and restock. With the AI giving you appropriate orders from above and working with you in tandem. It all looks like its possible.

    This is fantastic. I use CAD all day, every day, as a Design Engineer on Construction Machines (yellow ones from the UK), and I can tell you all catagorically, that the effort this has taken Dan to do is absolutely staggering. To think he has not only done the concept design work, i.e. detailed sketches etc, but then has had to model in every single detail, right down to the nuts and bolts, but also to think through each system, and make sure that it all gets the physics right from beginning to end. Making sure that every panel in the ship, is bolted to the framework underneath. And this is just the bare bones of the ship. Then there is all the decour and lighting to consider, then the whole galaxy, down to every planet and moon etc.
    I'm in awe of any person that can devote this amount of brainpower and time to a project, and still manage to stay sane.
    I work on designing parts of diggers, basically, and even something as simple as a chassis, or a boom, has so much detail involved that noboody will see. So it can take me weeks to design something like a boom for a digger, and that's comparible to a single piece of framework on this vast spaceship. My mind truly boggles at the scale of this project.
    No offence to Dan, but seeing this makes me feel like I make mud pies all day long, and Dan is doing the proper, grown-up engineering.
    Amazing job Dan.

    So good to see this project going live on Kickstarter! I will definitely be jumping in at Commadore. I'm not expecting a game that does every single thing a space sim could ever do - instead I'm hoping that what's already here will keep progressing and evolving under a tight scope. A focussed game that delivers on the core gameplay loop you've already laid out, whether scaled for a solo-dev or a small team, is already more than enough.
    The demos have been fantastic, and no game that I've ever tried has come close to the feeling of boundless exploration that the pre-alpha pulls off. More than that, you're a fantastic designer and developer (as is Claire), and I'd be proud to help support your craft. Hold the course, and you'll get there!
    I'm looking forward to the journey of this game being made, and can't wait to see where it goes! Best of luck :)

      ACtually it is more feasible to do what Star Citizen did... I am sure you didn't grasp the complexity to generate life on planets, associate a "degree of civilization" to each life form and also program how they will interact towards you. There is a reason why that is not been done by anyone; and even No Man Sky with its procedural creatures opted for non-interactive ones that just act like attack-or-flee.

    • @polakjan
      @polakjan 2 месяца назад

      @@fcf8269 It's not actually that complicated. It's basically the same thing as AIs in 4X games like Civ or Stellaris, just with a bit more procedural generation.

    • @fcf8269
      @fcf8269 2 месяца назад

      @@polakjanGenerating populations like you do in a 4x game is way easier... Just look at civilization, which could do that on a 486 30 years ago?
      But that was just an entity acting as "population", that you would not interact wiht except with some sentences to ally yourself or what not. Here you technically get out of the ship, go to the planet and interact with this civilization as I understand it (basically a first contact). If the whole thing is just a cutscene or a text screen with a couple of images, then yes, you can do that easily.
      But if the objective is to actually interact with those entities on the ground...

    This looks fantastic, but I REALLY hope the final product doesn't have the stiff character movement. The way the player bumps up the stairs, the way the first person camera jitters, the lack of IK and different postures, etc. It reminds me of a social game like Second Life or something. Given that the game loop boils down to moving around the ship and pressing buttons, then moving and pressing buttons NEED to be fun or the game loop doesn't work. Looking forward to seeing more.

      One of the main reasons for KS ( and it is a stretch goal on there currently), is to hire a character developer so we can sort those issues out. The solo dev is a generalist and as you can see has created so much on his own so far, so it'll get polished as time goes on :)

  • @fremenGaming
    @fremenGaming 2 месяца назад +5

    I dont want to be pessimistic here, but the scope sounds as big as Star Citizens scope if not bigger :D So whats the time scale we lookin at it here? 10-20 years of dev with budget of 100mil $ ? :)
    But seriously? Whats the plan to dev it in reasonable time, even with good amount of ppl?

    • @StarshipSimulator
      @StarshipSimulator  2 месяца назад +1

      If you try out the tech demo on Steam, you'll see that we've already implemented a lot of the planned game systems. It's clunky right now for sure, but you can already fly around the whole galaxy. From this point it's just a case of building on that foundation and adding more content/game systems over time.
      We're hoping to achieve a polished alpha state by April 2025, at which point we'll go live in Early Access. Good developers cost ~£60k per year, so in terms of funding we need a lot, but as an indie studio we can still get a lot done on a tight budget.

    • @Cleeeer
      @Cleeeer 2 месяца назад

      I think it's also worth pointing out that everything that's been created so far has been almost unfunded. The studio receives some Patreon/Ko-fi donations from the lovely community but generally, there has been no money behind this, and it's already so far along. With huge funding, the base game would already be finished :D

    • @fremenGaming
      @fremenGaming 2 месяца назад

      @@StarshipSimulator I think the game idea is great. I myself am game developer and was thinking on such project. I hope you can do it and I wish you best i can :)
      But be cautious. Its always 1.5 - 2x more than planned in game dev ;)

    • @ODSTGeneralYT
      @ODSTGeneralYT 2 месяца назад

      I love Star Citizen, but the game seems to have been mismanaged at several levels and in part has been held back by slowly turning into an MMO which the servers haven't really been able to support yet, so stuff like server meshing has gated the game a bit.
      I would say this game is more in line with games like Elite or No Man's Sky in terms of content and scale, with a lot more emphasis put on the ship gameplay aspect. Some stuff like transition-less landings will also not be in, which will make some aspects of development easier.
      As for how long I couldn't really say. I think its fair to say not 10 years, but the dev hopes to have early access within a year. But the full game I would imagine will take at least another 2-5 depending on how their kickstarter fairs.
      Keeping in mind UE5 has made some aspects of development much easier.

    • @JackDaloots
      @JackDaloots 2 месяца назад +2

      I am also worried about the scope here. Honestly, the space ship itself is the easy part. It's all of the modeling of the galaxy. Do you have the ability to send away teams to planets? I would assume not. What interactions are possible with the destinations beyond seeing them through a viewport? Can you trade with the other civilizations you find? Are there politics? Combat? What systems are you developing for content generation? What multi-player cap are you shooting for?
