      Leckie also wrote a book about the American Revolution that is good. It is out of print, but a good library would have a copy. Eugene Sledge also wrote a book about his experiences in the Pacific that is good to read. He was actually a pretty sensitive sort of guy, but still functioned well as a soldier, and when he was in China after the war he had a sort of adoptive family, but he never learned what happened to them because China was embroiled in a lot of turmoil after with the Nationalists and Socialists in a civil war.

      Leckie's dad owned a small newspaper, Leckie went to work their after the war, and I think he also became a college teacher.

      The Japanese eventually gave up on these suicidal banzai attacks, at Peleliu, Okinawa and Iwo Jima they actually had very sound defense plans and the Americans had to fight much harder to rout the Japanese. It was still certain the Japanese were going to lose those islands eventually as their supplies were cut off by that point in the war, but they were determined to make the Americans lose as many soldiers in the process as possible. Very few Japanese actually surrendered.

      You should watch a movie called Unbroken. It's about an American Olympic athlete who winds up in the US military and captured by the Japanese. That little abuse of authority by that officer over Leckie's chest reminded me of it because Zamperini, the athlete, winds up being captured by the Japanese because of an abuse of authority. I despise people abusing their authority like little else in life.

    The actor who played Gibson portrayed one of the most harrowing scenes in the series. It's not graphic with blood and explosions, but how broken he was just says it all.

    The Japanese just running face first into the American lines was no exaggeration. The Japanese had a notorious honor system, and were more than willing to die in a stupid banzai charge in the name of the Emperor, as long as it meant they didn’t have to surrender. They even taught their civilians to fear the American liberators so bad that they were convinced the Americans would commit mass murder and rape, so they would jump off of cliffs or kill themselves. I can’t understand that mindset personally, but it was a cultural reason for the mass charges.

    Leckie, wanted to get back to his old outfit because he knew these guys and didn't want to be reassigned to a bunch of strangers. When it comes to a matter of life and death you want to be with friends.

    the pacific is based off of two books, With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa by Eugene Sledge and Helmet for My Pillow by Robert Leckie and it also use some historys from two other books. would recommend reading the books.

    Because he was admitted to the psych. ward on Banika, Leckie's enuresis was possibly one of the forms of PTSD or combat fatigue brought on by the trauma of combat and, in this case, the terrible conditions at Cape Gloucester that also led to Lebec's suicide and the mental breakdown of Gibson.

    • @ColdWarShot
      @ColdWarShot Год назад +1

      To add to that Lebec had previously survived the Dieppe Raid, which by all accounts was the worst amphibious landing in the European Theater by those who survived it. Trading one hell hole where you lost 70% of your friends to another even worse one with little to no respite, it’s no wonder he snapped.

    Didn't notice this, but in a scene where they were marching in the rain, they had condoms pulled over the rifle barrels to try to keep them dry, which wasn't unusual.

    The Japanese did change their tactics as the war progressed. Fewer suicide charges, more intricate defense in depth. The ratios changed as well. In the Pentagon someone was considering how many shells we had to fire to kill each enemy soldier, how many Americans were killed for each Japanese. As we advanced closer to Japan those numbers changed. This math was a big part of the decision to drop the atomic bombs.

    The Japanese liked to attack at night because it let them get close without being hit by artillery. Later in the war they changed their tactics... as you'll see.

  • @leewaffe3
    @leewaffe3 Год назад +2

    @5:35 There were never any suitable survivors for the Japanese to learn from for every next battle or campaign because with the island hopping campaign the Japanese on each and every island was killed or committed suicide in the fighting. That and there was no real way for them to evacuate their men off the island that was controlled by the American and British navy. Not that it mattered anyway as the Japanese army, and military in general were not doctrinated to change tactics or strategy. They believed to take positions or engage the enemy it was imparative to attack en masse to overwhelm the defensive positions with any lacking weaponry or manpower could be overcome by the warrior spirit as each Japanese soldier was taught to revere themselves as divine instruments of the emperor.
    @13:25 The Nambu pistol was one of the worst, often killed more owners than the enemy. Soldiers and Marines wanted them as souveniers more than as a firearm. That's all they're good for anyway.
    You can see that in their weaponry too. The Japanese used swords, bayonets, and bolt action rifles in attacks that didn't have the fire superiority as the Marines would have with all their weapons being semi-automatic or fully automatic as Lekie had with his tommy gun killing the 4 men in the Japanese patrol. Never the less every Japanese man, women, and Child would be thrusted upon the believe that the warrior spirit would see them through in victory or in a glorious death worth of the emperor.
    As you watch The Pacific, it's gonna get a hell of alot worse as they get closer to Japan. Be prepared.

    Okay, this show is AMAZING even if you don't like Westerns you need to see this show! It starts with one season of 1883 then it goes to the same family in the show 1923, then it has 5 seasons in present day called Yellowstone... I CANNOT believe that MTV did this show! Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Sam Elliot, Harrison Ford, Kevin Costner... I can't believe the lineup of talent! This is the BEST Western saga in DECADES!

    Another reason the Japanese liked Banzai charges is because they relied on close quarter combat and the bayonet. Far to many accounts of Japanese soldiers using captives for live bayonet practice to desensatize there soldiers. The culture of the Japanese military also was rather bad. A fella by the name of Mark Felton has a 1 hour episode on his second channel and he stated at the end something to this effect "The Japanese soldier is a warning to us all, of what can happen when compassion and humanity are beaten out of the warrior"

    I HIGHLY recommend the third installment of the HBO war series, "Generation Kill" VERY VERY realistic funny and dark and i can honestly say that as i was deployed in the same area that the time it is based on.
