  • In this video I'll be fixing a cluster that came out of a 2003 Chevy Silverado. It's a bit different from my usual auto body repair videos, but I figured I'd through something different into the mix. This cluster had a weird problem with the bottom screen that I was able to repair. This type of a fix would apply to repairing speedometers our of 2003, 2004 and 2005 chevy Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, Sierra, Hummer H2 and Cadillac Escalade. Hope this video is helpful to some folks out there.

    Great job, particularly replacing the IC, which is always tricky. Quite a different repair, after seeing you build the frame machine. Pays to be versatile these days - saves a fortune paying someone to do the job for you. Might have been a couple of hundred bucks to send that cluster to an instrument repairer.

    • @fix206
      @fix206  5 лет назад +3

      I'd say that 95% of cluster repair shops wouldn't know how to approach this sort of repair, that's how I ended up with it :) The guy that sent it to me said that couple of instrument repairers told him that his cluster was unrepairable. Usually when you send the cluster out all that those folks will do is change out motors and lights, and do some soldering in all the usual places, however since this is a not a common problem by their standards, they wouldn't know what to do and just send it back.

    Great video and explanation, thanks. I noticed around 3:54 you plugged in a connector to test the cluster. The wiring diagram I have shows A12 and B12 as ground; b11 as battery voltage but it looks like those red wires might also go to the upper (A) row. Did you power A11(Lamp dimming) as well?

      I'm not home to check the pin out but as far as I remember there are three positive wires and two grounds that I'm using. As far as the positives goes, one is a constant, one is switched and the third is back lighting

    Hello! You said to leave a comment if i have any cluster issues. So here i am trying one more thing before i smash the whole dashboard lol
    I have a Kenworth T2000 2007 it’s a semi truck. My gauges were acting up they would go off for a couple hours then come back on for a few minutes then down again. Then i let the truck sit for about a year and half because the engine overheated, and when i decided to do a rebuilt on it the gauges were no longer working. They do cycle properly when i turn the key but when i turn the truck on and they are done cycling they just go back down! Only gauges working on my dash are Volt gauge and air gauges. Water temp, oil psi and temp, rpm and speedometer, and turbo (boost) gauges, and mileage don’t work. I know this truck has wires running from the engine ECM to this Cab control module that communicate about these things, i pulled it out and it looks good, it hasn’t gotten wet or anything looks brand new in there. I’ve been trying to figure it out for months and still can’t find the problem! Any idea what it might be?

    • @fix206
      @fix206  3 года назад +1

      Don't think I would be much help, I've never worked on any of those Kenworth clusters, don't even know what they look like. I don't have any sort of schematics pertaining to them either :-(

      @@fix206 thank you for the reply. I will try few more things on it and if it doesn’t work I’ll just change the whole harness and take the cab control module for a repair if needed. Hopefully that fixes the problem. Thanks again for replying 🙏🏼

    Great video!!! I know it's a 4 yr old video, but I had a quick question, I'm hoping you wouldn't mind answering? If the information display itself comes and goes, as a whole, what would the likely culprit be? When the display is on, it is completely correct. It used to be that hitting a bump might would make it go on or off, but now it rarely comes on at all. Thanks so much in advance, for your time and compliments again on the great video! Respectfully, Tony.

      If it's an intermitent issue such as that, then you most likely have a cracked solder joint somewhere on the board

    • @addie750
      @addie750 10 месяцев назад

      @@fix206 Awesome! After submitting my inquiry earlier, I was thinking the issue over and was thinking the same thing. It seem to be the only thing that makes sense, considering it tended to happen only when the part was under vibration. I don't have much experience with boards and reflowing solder joints, so I wanted to make sure there wasn't something I wasn't aware of and I was hoping to not have to replace any large components. Thank you again for your time and professional opinion! I really appreciate it!
      (Side note: So apparently 3 yrs ago, you answered a previous question for me regarding the same cluster. 😅 I had totally forgotten that and earlier today, was actually reading my own previous question and your response to it, NOT realizing I was the one who had posted it in the first place! 🙄😆 Go figure...)

    I have a question. I did all my steppers, reflow prndl resistor and surrounding 6, upgraded to led bulbs 5 years ago including the 6v bulbs in the climate control. 3 years ago I changed the headlight switch because the backlight would go out but if I scrolled the dimmer it would come back on. Recently the backlight in the cluster dims to almost nothing but the climate control stays bright. If it’s 100 degrees out with the windows up, later that night it’s working properly. Until it’s running for a while and warms up a little from the bulbs and it goes dim again. I’m know I’m going to have to most likely reflow the whole board, but I was just wondering if you knew where to look first to diag in case I don’t find it visually with the microscope. I like to have that 100% diag every time or I feel like cheating if I just “do everything” and it’s fixed. I can’t find any kind of diagram through Mitchell or all data pro on what does what pertaining the cluster itself.

    I am close to seattle, have a 2004 tahoe my son drives. The odometer and gear selector quite today. I assume its the chip you changed out in the video, where dontou buy this chip and what is it called?

  • @pr0xZen
    @pr0xZen 4 месяца назад

    Great video. Regarding the chip you swapped - do these need any form of programming or pairing to work in the cluster (and by extent car) it's going into? Is it specific for each car, each model, or the same in every csr that use the same type of cluster? Is there anything like odometer stored in it, that will need correcting?
    I'll be receiving a cluster from a 2003 silverado duramax, from a friend in the mail soon. Needs the steppers done but from the other sympthoms this chip might need replacing too. I'm good with the soldering work, but I haven't done this or any other electronics work on chevy before. And the car is on the other side of the country. So I need to know if this is a job I can complete without access to the car, and what if any limitations there are on what kind of donor I can use to get a hold of a replacement chip.

    What's strange is that, as soon as I unlock the doors again, it goes back to normal. Could a bad solder cause that issue? Thank you.

    When the vehicle is off, my same cluster will ocasionally flash on all the segments on the same display or flash on and off like a strobe light or may remain all constantly on then eventually will turn itself off. What can be causing this symptom? I am referring to the blue band that appears on the display when you initially turn on the vehicle. It is this blue band that is flashing on and off like Christmas tree or may remain fully on even though the vehicle is off.

    • @fix206

      If the screen is not coming on at all, then the problem most likely going to be somewhere else, sound like a power delivery to the screen is absent. Mileage is stored on a different chip. I do mail in repairs. So If you want to send your cluster in I can get it repaired, let me know if it's something you'd be interested in

I made sure that all the beds were in the right polarity but now after I drive my car after about 30 min the lights go off, its like they are getting too hot or something. Next day or time I drive they work fine for a length of time and same thing. you can tap the glass and it comes on once and a while but after an hour of highway driving they are out again. any suggestions? is there better bulbs I should use or something?

You can source a used one but be aware that if that used cluster is currently functional but hasn't been rebuilt you will have all the same issues down the road that you're experiencing with your current cluster, you've only bought yourself some time... Best and cheapest way to ago about it is to get your original cluster rebuilt

    Great , I finally found a video somewhat related to my problem . I have an 03 Chevy Silverado long bed 5.3 that has nearly 350k miles . it has been , and still is , a great work truck for me and has a longer list of problems than anyone would want to read about . but , the problem that has me stumped the most is , that my led odometer read-out is suddenly displaying in the French language instead of English . what in the I DON'T KNOW is going on ? over the many years I have either fixed or adapted to all the problems with my truck as I have done with this problem …. I just google what the read out says ….. but why would an American made truck suddenly start speaking French ? and is there a way to fix my problem by connecting to the computer to change it back ?.

    • @fix206
      @fix206  4 года назад +2

      There is a black plastic pole that sticks out of your cluster, push it down and hold it until word 'English" is displayed and then let go. That should fix it... Let me know how it works out

    • @chrisbright5583
      @chrisbright5583 4 года назад +3

      I have tried that numerous times in the past . the screen will just cycle through the same normal readouts , change engine oil , low fuel level , and so on. but still in French of course . no matter how long I hold the post button down no other options for language show up . the screen just goes blank . but some thing told me to try it again , but this time with the key turned to the on position but not actually starting the engine . then , by gosh , it worked . thank you very much for your help . I feel like an idiot because I knew that post was the key but I kept trying the exact same thing over and over again expecting a different outcome . now onto the next problem with that old truck . and thank you for making these video's for old chevy trucks , I like all of them . I will be checking my inst panel for weld cracks and my gas gauge sometimes works and seems to go out or come back on when I hit a big bump in the road . I know the little motor is good , as I had a new dash put in at the dealership . nearly 500 bucks is way too much to do the first time , and I will not spend that kind of money a second time for the same problem . you vids are very well presented and easy to learn from . on to the next one .
